To anyone that is pointing out how Return of the King only made more than Dark Knight because it was the end of a trilogy, I will point out numbers from Fellowship of the Ring. That one was the real wild card, as no one knew how big it would go:
Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Domestic: $315,544,750 36.2%
+ Foreign: $555,985,574 63.8%
= Worldwide: $871,530,324
The Dark Knight (2008)
Domestic: $533,345,358 53.2%
+ Foreign: $468,576,467 46.8%
= Worldwide: $1,001,921,825
Dark Knight was 7 years later, with lots of hoopla behind it, higher ticket prices, and its foreign box office was still less than the first LOTR, back when foreign was not as big a deal to studios (as many on here claim). Sure, TDK beat Fellowship worldwide, but only because of the domestic.
Now let's look at the other two LOTR:
Two Towers (2002)
Domestic: $342,551,365 37.0%
+ Foreign: $583,495,746 63.0%
= Worldwide: $926,047,111
Yup, foreign still higher than Dark Knight. And still lower ticket prices.
Return of the King (2003)
Domestic: $377,845,905 33.7%
+ Foreign: $742,083,616 66.3%
= Worldwide: $1,119,929,521
Oh, look at that. Five years before TDK, and still higher foreign take.
Dark Knight rises will do VERY well. There is no doubting that. But domestic is what is going to save it and I do think TDKR will do more than Hobbit domestically.
But The Hobbit is going to kill TDKR in foreign grosses. And you can throw all the "bu..bbb...but 3d prices!" bullshit out there all you want. It will still make more money. The previous 3 LOTR movies, with no IMAX or anything charges and lower ticket prices still made more bank than TDK at the foreign box office. Hobbit will destroy all for WW box office this year.
