Real Box Office Talk: TDKR v The Hobbit. Worldwide. What say you?

The only Peter Jackson movies I like are FOTR and The Frighteners. In other words, not a fan.

Which makes the absolutely outstanding job he did with FOTR seem so odd in comparison to the rest of his work. Its like a masterpiece amidst a career filled with mediocrity.
He made Brain Dead man

I think some people are letting their love of particular directors and their own likes/dislikes of franchises get in the way of the stats.

Inception increased the Nolan hype 3 fold. It proved that he could make a mega hit outside of the Batman franchise. I will admit that I'm looking forward to TDKR more than The Hobbit but I'm Nolan crazy enough to think it will beat it's WW box office take.

I'm agreeing too much with you lately.

All I see is nervous laughter.

I can think of at least 5 RotK scenes off the top of my head that are better than anything Nolan has done. The film is not without it's flaws (ghosts deux ex), but it is still ridiculously good.

And I can tell you how much TTT disappointed me to the point where not a single fuck was given about anyone or anything in ROTK.

Is it possible to have a movie thread on GAF that doesn't eventually turn into an argument between Scullibundo and Solo? THE WORLD MAY NEVER KNOW.

TTT is definitely the low point of the trilogy for me. It's not bad by any sense of the word. But if I were to give Fellowship a perfect 10, RotK a 9.5, then TTT would get a 7.

LOL wut?

Anyone here predicting TDKR will make more money than The Hobbit internationally is seriously underestimating how beloved Tolkien's books are worldwide.

It is not even going to be close to be honest.

Oh, and jett too.

I like movies. But it's hard to post anything about movies, because it seems like every time I enter a movie thread, the topic has changed from whatever the OP was about to how amazing or abysmal (because there is no middle-ground) you three think this or that director is. About half the time, the director in question seems to be either Nolan or Cameron, sometimes when the thread in question wasn't even about Nolan or Cameron or their movies to begin with.

The three of you, but jett especially, also frequently like to throw out dismissive reaction gifs when other people try to join in on the conversation with something you don't agree with. Yeah, that's great for discussion. Don't, like, respond with words or anything. Don't discuss what was actually said on this discussion board. Just post a picture of some movie character shaking his head and continue with your own private little conversation.

I don't know. It's kinda gotten old if you ask me.

Where did I state Nolan as being either amazing or abysmal? People often seem to confuse not eating out of a director's ass meaning that you hate them.

You're in a box office thread (King Cameron's presence was inevitable - had Solo not brought it up, somebody else would have) about The Hobbit and TDKR. It is not unreasonable to expect that the directors of each film will be discussed.

The gifs are just for fun, cuz, you know, it's not srs bznz. I really have no idea what your problem is.

This post makes more than your previous one. I agree with it also.

I feel film GAF (is that what you guys call yourself?) is not welcoming of new members. Your random gifs give me headaches.

To anyone that is pointing out how Return of the King only made more than Dark Knight because it was the end of a trilogy, I will point out numbers from Fellowship of the Ring. That one was the real wild card, as no one knew how big it would go:

Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
Domestic: $315,544,750 36.2%
+ Foreign: $555,985,574 63.8%
= Worldwide: $871,530,324

The Dark Knight (2008)
Domestic: $533,345,358 53.2%
+ Foreign: $468,576,467 46.8%
= Worldwide: $1,001,921,825

Dark Knight was 7 years later, with lots of hoopla behind it, higher ticket prices, and its foreign box office was still less than the first LOTR, back when foreign was not as big a deal to studios (as many on here claim). Sure, TDK beat Fellowship worldwide, but only because of the domestic.

Now let's look at the other two LOTR:

Two Towers (2002)
Domestic: $342,551,365 37.0%
+ Foreign: $583,495,746 63.0%
= Worldwide: $926,047,111

Yup, foreign still higher than Dark Knight. And still lower ticket prices.

Return of the King (2003)
Domestic: $377,845,905 33.7%
+ Foreign: $742,083,616 66.3%
= Worldwide: $1,119,929,521

Oh, look at that. Five years before TDK, and still higher foreign take.

Dark Knight rises will do VERY well. There is no doubting that. But domestic is what is going to save it and I do think TDKR will do more than Hobbit domestically.

But The Hobbit is going to kill TDKR in foreign grosses. And you can throw all the "bu..bbb...but 3d prices!" bullshit out there all you want. It will still make more money. The previous 3 LOTR movies, with no IMAX or anything charges and lower ticket prices still made more bank than TDK at the foreign box office. Hobbit will destroy all for WW box office this year.
