Reddit done fuckin up: currently banning several major websites

Does this mean that Reddit will finally go the way of Digg?

Because jesus, I hate that place.

I'm pretty sure part of reddit's success is contingent on not updating its layout.
People who actually care just use RES and people who bitch don't actually go there anyway.

in some cases you guys may be misinterpreting disinterest for thread shitting.. maybe my own disinterest led me to give others the benefit of the doubt, but I don't see anything incredibly egregious here, other than the whining (by some)

But if you took the time to post your disinterest you're obviously not totally apathetic and are actually a smug bastard. Trying to clearly declare your disinterest is just confirmation.

hey guys i'm too cool for popular sites, time to let everyone know i'm a rebel

i kid, i hate facebook

Ok I don't get your post. Thought the thread was about how Reddit banned a few sites, not about if you like it or not. Idk how saying you don't go there adds to the discussion.

Yeah fuck that site, I only got like ten upvotes there anyway, before I realized it's not worth my time.

EDIT:

oops I just read this, never mind I guess I have nothing to contribute towards the main topic on hand because , I don't really visit those sites they are banning but I do visit Reddit the odd times.

I think I've been to Reddit maybe... once? in the last 3 years. You don't need it.

It has various news about stuff ranging from technology to politics. Sure, maybe someone like you who is always looking for news and reading news doesn't need it, but it's nice for just an overlook at the happenings of the day.

Personally, I don't. But hey, if someone else feels they benefit from it, great. I think some people are getting too defensive about Reddit to be honest. It's a website, I know a lot of people use it but a lot of people don't as well.

And that's totally fine. It just doesn't personally appeal to me but I'm not trying to say someone else can't.

Only just got told about /gonewild, and well since we don't have "that" section it's the only one I go there for.

I think it's stupid because it's like Gaf (especially what off-topic is) but it isn't Gaf, and thus people feel the need to shit on it.

Can we possibly stay on topic with a Reddit related thread for once in our lifetimes, instead of becoming a poll about whether you visit Reddit or not, or how much Reddit is better or worse than GAF? Thanks.

Oh yeah? Well what if someone said bad things about your precious GAF, huh? HUH??! Would you like it THEN?

I don't see all that much shitting on it. Some people use it, some people don't. The internet is a large place with a lot of different possible sites. I DO think some of the heat is probably the fact that some people identify with the reddit community, some people do not but really, reddit is like a lot of sites, a way to acquire information. You either like it or you don't.

Edit: just saw Evilore's post.

I went to there once because so many people here bring it up. Looked at what was on my screen and.....

The response to the uproar has been rather thin from the Reddit moderators, and the details of why the sites were banned has not been revealed. The implication is, though, that most of the sites simply hired social media marketers, and didn’t know or care how the marketers practiced their trade.

It's like nobody read the OP at all and just said 'WHAT THE FUCK FUCK REDDIT ARGH RAPE THEIR MOTHERS'

the internet is stupid

Managing and trying to 'clean' a website like Reddit must be a nightmare, so much traffic and 'upvote' abusing

pretty much. unintended consequence of lots of good websites getting banned because they just pay marketers who use dodgy practices.

I was going to quote the people but fuck it.

Yeah, I just think some people hate on it because it's a mainstream site now. It's really just like any forum, honestly, except for huge aggregated forums to show a little of everything, and very little moderation or policing in most places. There are a lot of little communities as well, just like in Gaf.

Also, I think that banning sites temporarily for abusing the voting system seems perfectly fine to me.

I just use popurls and can quickly scan just about everything on the internet that's making news.

Seems like those site were 'gaming the system' over on Reddit and probably deserve to be punished.

So anyway, going back on topic, I read a blurb somewhere that Digg started doing the same thing because they had similar problems with spammers, which led to Digg losing popularity, and allowed sites like Reddit to gain marketshare.

Any truth to this?

Reddit is hugely popular, so if a link gets popular they can get tens of thousands of clicks. It is a good idea to block the sites that are spamming them.

Apparently Gaf was banned from Digg at sometime. Just read that though, not sure, never really went to Digg that much.

The important thing is that the site bans are temporary. Perhaps they should investigate into the issue more deeply once they unban the sites to see which patterns may rise up again and ban users they may suspect are simply marketers.

I don't see the problem here. Site employees were spamming > site is temporarily banned.

It's not like there aren't plenty of counterparts to the sites that were banned anyways.

I thought Digg's problem was that their promotion system was being hijacked and they did little about it. Then they compounded their problem by having a redesign that everyone hated.

This was about 3-5 years ago, so my memory is hazy.

I'm beginning to love these threads. So many people on gaf bitter at reddit. Did the guy that keeps posting 'le reddit' jokes show up in this thread yet?

No, just the same clowns circle jerking each other throughout the thread.

Anyway the bans are temporary, so to be honest this sounds like a non issue. And I completely agree - moderating such a place (much like GAF I suppose) must be a nightmare. The amount of content there is simply mind boggling.

Alright this is the wrong way to do it. Don't like the default subreddits? Make an account and remove the ones you don't like, and add ones that you do. There's nothing wrong with skipping over reddit in favour of other sites, as many people in here appear to have done, but hating on the default configuration and thinking that's all there is to it is just wrong.

You and me both. I've thought about checking it out and I just feel nothing but apathy towards the idea.

I lurked there for several months, until I realized the community there sucks ass. It's unbelievable how hivemind-y the entire place is, and nearly every subreddit is terrible. The "gaming" one especially is laughable and quite possibly one of the worst gaming communities I've been to, and I've been to GameFAQs and Kotaku so that's saying something. The only thing I really use it for now is to hop in and look at top world news-type posts. I steer clear of the community.

The fact they arbitrarily decided to ban a bunch of big-name websites doesn't strike me as particularly surprising.

EDIT: So they did it because of spamming. Not a bad policy, after all. I believe they had an issue some time ago with random one-post accounts only posting "veterans coming home" videos for some strange reason.

I have no idea what Reddit is. Is it some kind of N4G but for actual news? (I really don't know Reddit, never even heard of it before I came to GAF.)

Reddit really needs to fight this stuff, lest they wind up becoming run by a cabal and driving their user base away like Digg. Good on them.
