Reddit done fuckin up: currently banning several major websites

I lurked there for several months, until I realized the community there sucks ass. It's unbelievable how hivemind-y the entire place is, and nearly every subreddit is terrible. The "gaming" one especially is laughable and quite possibly one of the worst gaming communities I've been to, and I've been to GameFAQs and Kotaku so that's saying something. The only thing I really use it for now is to hop in and look at top world news-type posts. I steer clear of the community.

The fact they arbitrarily decided to ban a bunch of big-name websites doesn't strike me as particularly surprising.

EDIT: So they did it because of spamming. Not a bad policy, after all. I believe they had an issue some time ago with random one-post accounts only posting "veterans coming home" videos for some strange reason.

Suggesting that GAF isn't "hivemind-y" about certain things is ridiculous. In my experience, reddit is no different.

Kind of related: It's weird, because I notice on every top post on reddit, the top comment is almost always contradicting said post, or at least against it.

Oh no, now I'll never ever visit reddit.

Why would anyone want to do such an awful thing to begin with? If all you need is video game and tech news there are better ways of getting it.

That said, this further cements the website as being not very good. I don't believe in "banning" websites. People should be able to make decisions on whether they want to see something or not for themselves.

So anyway, going back on topic, I read a blurb somewhere that Digg started doing the same thing because they had similar problems with spammers, which led to Digg losing popularity, and allowed sites like Reddit to gain marketshare.

Any truth to this?

It mostly came from a huge site redesign they did that did away with a bunch of features. Basically from this to this.

I don't use reddit at all ever. I would use it more often if it didn't have such an unsightly layout.

Nothing against the concept of the site, I just don't like browsing it at all.

Sad but true.

See, I don't get that. Why is it cool to not go to a site? Is it a counter-culture thing or what?

Dammit, it's now cool to be a non-conformist.

Well, I'm such a non-conformist that I will no longer conform to being a non-conformist.

*goes to reddit*

Um. Based on what's quoted I'd say good on reddit. Who cares how high quality those sites are if they're poisoning and gaming your own site?

edit - oh my gracious, now i see this thread isn't about reddit at all but rather it was becoming some sort of hipster caucus until Evilore shut that shit down.

What features did they remove?

Favorites, categories, time stamps, history search, looking up your submissions, it was pretty dreadful and they eventually reverted most of it eventually. Kevin Rose was a bit flagrant about the outcry too which didn't help.

hurr durr reddit = communism.

Please explain how Reddit is stopping anyone from making a decision on whether they want to see something or not for themselves? Reddit is not an ISP... All they are doing is taking steps to prevent sites from abusing their system for their own gain, how can anyone take issue with that?

Those sites are temporarily banned because of concerns that they're spamming the site i.e. Articles from those sites get posted and bots upvote them.

Everything on there originated on 4chan and has been posted here anyways. I don't care for Reddit at all. 4chan's trolling is almost high art compared to the shit posted there.

EDIT: I didn't see Evilore's post. I think the banning of these sites is bullshit and hopefully the site will get Digg'd.

GUYS I TOTALLY DONT EVEN USE REDDIT OR FACEBOOK

on a serious note, i didnt realize there was an invasive advertising defense force... or maybe they secretly work for ad companies too!

theres a new goddamned Reddit thread here every day now lol

.

Was this actually reddit or a subreddit that has enough viewers for the front page? They shut down the reddit.com subreddit a long time ago.

I've said it before, reddit is great once you get rid of all the standard subreddits and subscribe to your own.

I feel like one of the few people who doesn't even bother with Reddit.

i only go to reddit when someone links me to reddit

i've never seen their front page

edit: so i looked at the front page for the first time and clicked a few links and i can definitely see how some people can spend all day on there.

I've been not using reddit ever since I was born. I'm really cool though, so I get why some people took longer to start.

I've visited Reddit maybe three times and each time I'm left baffled as to why people use that horribly designed clusterfuck of a site.
