I wonder if by introducing my son to Nintendo, I have inadvertently doomed him as well to a future of checking NeoGAF Nintendo console rumor threads 25 years from now...

Just keep in mind that Sony JUST announced a 'new' console that's releasing in 2 months. That means we could be waiting until January, not that I think we will.

A revision of a console and something brand new are entirely different.

One of Nintendo's biggest failings with the Wii U was getting the general public to actually know what it was. They're (hopefully) not stupid enough to make the same mistake twice.

Yeah, while explaining the concept is a good point about how this is different from the PS4 pro, I think the bigger issue is software.

For a brand new console you need a good lineup of launch software. I think the Wii U had about 30 games at launch. Two months is not NEARLY enough time to allow developers to market and explain all of those games, even if a majority are ports or multiplats. Not that individual games can't be revealed just a couple months before launch (it does happen) but an entire launch lineup cannot possibly be with any effectiveness.

The PS4 Pro was a known quantity. It's a revision that will play exactly the same games as old PS4s. There's really not much explaining needed: It's a better version of the console that's been dominating the gaming market for the last couple years.

NX on the other hand is a completely new system with an entirely new ecosystem. Outside of Zelda and a couple other games we have literally no idea what its upcoming line up will look like, what it's capable of or what it even is.

Travel to and fro from Japan to the US on the west coast isn't too bad or super expensive. I doubt there is any secret reason Miyamoto is here other than the Mario announcement. But this statement is juat as flimsy as anything else written in this entire thread about NX.

Guys, I'm pretty confident that if Nintendo doesn't reveal the NX on day X, they will do so at a later date!

I think I have what it takes to be an analyst after all.

Ok I know it was brought up how Andre and Derrick happen to be going on vacation at the same time. I think they've done this before, but I started thinking it's very odd timing they both decide to go on vacation during the midst of when NX info could come. TGS is next week too...what if they took their "vacation" to Japan? Lol

I would think/hope Nintendo would have the sense to build some hype with a countdown and some media (teaser?) leading up tho the announcement instead of just dropping the news out of no where.

A new piece of hardware is a big deal and they need to treat it like a big deal with a little more confidence than they displayed with the Wii U.

I wonder what their marketing teams are cooking up. I haven't been too impressed lately.

Or what if they took their vacation now because they knew Nintendo won't announce anything the next 2 weeks or so? I'm not sure if Nintendo would reveal NX at an event only in Japan?

I don't think they would do a Japan only event. I could see them doing a simultaneous event in America, Europe and Japan.

I was just speculating. Odd they would "know" there won't be any NX info the next week or so so they decided to take vacation the same time.

That's not really related. If NX announcement was coming up they wouldn't take a vacation at that time. (Unless the purpose of this vacation is Nintendo related and not just to take some time off.)

Well what I mean is that they wouldn't necessarily know if an event is coming up, and they just think it's a good time to take a break. People are reading a bit too much into it. Journalists are allowed to take vacations.

Yeah but it's quite risky to do it when your job is reporting Nintendo news. If we assume they don't know the NX announcement date maybe they're thinking Nintendo would announce it a few weeks before, giving them enough time to have this vacation now.

Note: I'm not saying I believe their vacation is NX related in any way, I'm just stating some possibilities.

Usually these Nintendo announcements happen around noon in America and by that point it will be late night in Japan.

I sometimes don't understand the negativity on stuff like this. When there's all this anxiety in the air and thirst for any information, people look to analysts (you can use air quotes there if you prefer) to shed some light... any light at all. And if they don't know anything definitively, you get educated speculation. That's all they can do. I'm seeing a sentiment of hostility in here and in the other thread that doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. There's almost a sense of "hey asshole, if you can't tell me a date when this thing is going to be announced then just admit that you know nothing and shut the fuck up!"

Yeah, and this thread isn't the WSJ's target audience. There's a lot of more casual fans (and potential investors) who benefit from a "here's what we think Nintendo is up to" article.
