I hope the Y,X,B,A is the Gamecube style layout, the best Nintendo has ever made, oh and colored Y,X,B,A. I miss my green A and red B!

I'm really surprised that out of the console manufacturers, Nintendo is the one without colored buttons on their controllers.

Colorful buttons are proven to increase fun.

If the dpad works like this, would it be still ok?

It's splitted but not in an enoying way like Sony does and still could work like buttons.
That's better.

You may be thinking a bit too optimistically with Bethesda, 2K, Warner Bros., & EA.
  • While sure, I could see one EA & 2K Sports game each on the NX just for the sake of appeasing contracts, I'm not getting my hopes up for anymore.
  • Witcher probably won't happen on the NX thanks to its power & Zelda eating up the potential audience.
  • Since NRS ditched the PS3 & 360, there's a 50/50 chance on if they'll even bother with the NX. Same for the Batman games (mainly from WB Montreal, since Rocksteady seems to be done with the Arkham games).
  • Bethesda likely won't give a fuck either way.
  • CoD may give the NX a chance or two, but what happens afterwards depends on if the NX is a hit.

Let's not forget that NX is a handheld and Nintendo knows how to sell a handheld. And many of the western publishers require large userbase rather than technical power. Many of those (2K, Ubisoft, EA, WB) were there when Wii U launched but abandoned the platform when Nintendo failed to sell Wii U's. There's a high chance problem won't repeat with NX since it's a handheld, it has pokémon and Nintendo is basically unrivaled in the market right now. They'll all bring some stuff at launch (excpet Bethesda, they for some reason hate Nintendo) and after the system sales take off, they'll continue to bring more. Downporting isn't an issue for most developers, especially Activision have been pretty good with it on Wii.

Did that German 10d site or whatever it was called end up clarifying if they were JK about a reveal?

BTW, I'm personally a huge fan of the PS2/3 d-pad. I'd welcome it on a Nintendo system.

I know right! I lost my mind when Nintendo showed off the new 3DS with color, I am so in love with it. The new 3DS XL Pikachu also has color too, I really hope the NX is full of color...please Nintendo <3 we need more fun.

They have to release at least one version of Madden on NX, since they have NFL exclusive they must release it at least once on each platform, which is why 3DS and WiiU had Madden at launch

Rather they put Madden 17 or 18 on it is the question, would be dumb to put 17 on it since football season will be over when NX launches in March

If they release a version of 17, they're just fulfilling a contract and will pump out a barebones port with no intentions to ever make more no matter how it sells, since they essentially want it to die.

If they wait for 18, it means that they'll be giving it at least something of a shot and will continue if it sells enough.

They're going to do the former. It probably won't even have online.

Yep it was a prank.

HAHA VERY FUNNY :'(

Nintendo need to dump the Wii U stock on the slickdeals crowd, 129 with a game will do it.

Why? What would that accomplish? This thing is supposed to be on shelves at least until March. If it was such a terrible value for the retailers considering storage and shelve space they'd dump the prices themselves. I wonder how much stock they're keeping anyway.

Btw isn't it the same as ps1?

That was be lame even for them, but I can't say it's not impossible.

I don't expect any sports game from EA or 2k until holidays 2018. Maybe if it sells impressively well they will port Fifa/Madden 19 and/or NBA 2k19. Maybe.

I don't either, but if I was Nintendo I'd be paying whatever I needed to for a Madden 18 for NX. A full-fledged console version that you can play on the go would be something I think could be a system-seller.

I'm wondering if the Mario sports 3DS game is a stripped down version of an NX launch game which could help bring a sports game audience, for EA to capitalize on.

They really need to add Mario American Football.

I see what you mean and I think that's a decent possibility, but on the other hand I don't know how much interest arcade-y sports experiences hold for sports sim fans.

Anybody thinks Nintendo will do a live event with press- press will be able to get hands on after?

After the live event then Nintendo Treehouse will kick on for those of us at home to watch hours and hours of gameplay and more detailed explanation of the NX? I think Treehouse has to be there. It's so good and those guys do a great job at showing new games and good depth of the games.

If they do a Nintendo Direct that's cool, but maybe some think they will do a ND or some think they'll do a live event. Either way I think Treehouse is a must.

I'd say there's certainly some audience overlap between games like Madden and NFL Blitz... Probably a similar overlap with Mario sports games.

Actually thought about this myself just yesterday. Bethesda hasn't said anything to my knowledge and CD Projekt Red was joking around.
Companies mentioned as being excited are:
Take Two
Ubisoft
Warner Bros
Capcom
Square Enix
Now, I guess it would be easy to think "they like it because it's powerful!" But I don't think that's the case. Here's what I think:
Take Two made a bunch of money off of casual games on Wii like Carnival games. They might be the GTA guys but something reminiscent of the Wii might make them a lot of money if priced correctly. Ubisoft is the same, they made a ton of money on Wii which funded their "real" games. Just Dance sold multiple millions of copies on Wii alone and that just so happens to be the only game they have announced for it.
Warner Bros makes Lego games, something that sells well on any Nintendo hardware so they're going to keep at it.
Capcom and Square Enix both supported to 3DS, Capcom having its current biggest seller exclusive to it. SE announced games that fit the Nintendo handheld audience so that explains that. This is at least my way of seeing this. Would explain all of that while the NX being this hybrid. It's also not like it's devs saying "I'm excited since its powerful"

I think it's great that these guys have confidence in this system selling well...If they're excited for it as a product to sell to casuals is good for me. Even if it's just some casual games Take Two make it's better than nothing lol.

I'm really hoping the NX is a Wii 2.0. Wii as in being successful to the casual market, except this time we get a lot more core Nintendo titles. This to me is probably Nintendo's goal. If they sell well, then it'll get more casual type of games probably from third party devs, which isn't bad.

I think the Wii software is underrated and has lots of gems hidden in there and I think the NX can be the same, but beefed up with more Nintendo games.

(Western) third parties only require three things:

1.The system can be ported to from XBO/PS4. It doesn't matter if the game is downgraded, it just has to be feasible.

2. Sales need to be high enough to cover porting costs and then some. It's not enough to just scrap-by because the opportunity costs are two high.

3. Good networking features and a captive audience to upsell on stuff like DLC, Season Passes and Game-as-a-service.

The NX should (hopefully) do a better job at all three of those than the Wii U.

I'd like to think you're right because I want that to be a successful strategy for Nintendo, but my impression from most more casual gamers I know is that the specific difference between Mario and Blitz, whatever the depth or quality of the Mario game is, is that the Blitz game features real life football players whereas Mario is only on ok to play if you're still in diapers. The stigma amongst primarily PS/X players tends to be pretty significant amongst all age groups I've encountered. (Not that Nintendo has tried hard to cultivate that audience.)

Screw all the bullshit speculation. I'm just excited for the NX reveal, regardless of what it actually is.

Nothing will surpass the one important thing:

GAMES, GAMES, GAMES.

If Nintendo played their cards right, they have a ton of content down the pipeline. The mediocre 3DS Direct was just a show of the content they've come up with to keep that platform alive through the holidays and through 2017 to show that they haven't abandoned that audience.

But, it's clear to me that they're saving the best for their next platform. They're going for a strong start because they know weak starts have screwed them over in the past. Plus, the unified development means lots of potential for strong titles that aren't just the likes of "generic Mario sports game" and "Pikmin sidescroller that hardly anyone wants." Nintendo are saving the best for their make-or-break moment. I have confidence in this. I truly do.

Bring it on.

Yeah, true... that definitely seems to be the case for a good amount of that audience. I know back in the N64 days Mario Golf and Tennis were fairly big mainstream successes and they could potentially replicate that success with some of the sports audience. Who knows about American Football though.

That's what has me hyped. Nintendo clearly has all their major studios doing SOMETHING, and that is most likely working on major titles for NX. There really is no other explanation.
I can't speak to the commercial success of the NX obviously, but I know that they can just feed me major titles in their franchises and I'll be happy.
I can't wait.

I was thrilled the 3DS Direct was lackluster, bodes well for the NX.

I'd like for that to still be the way of things, and again I genuinely hope you're right because I think it's a worthwhile strategy for Nintendo to utilize and I hope it pays off--and as someone uninterested in arcade or sim sport games generally I'm more of an...armchair quarterback on this subject so to speak--but I'm concerned the world (well, the larger console gaming audience) has moved on in a way, at least for now. Unfortunately, Mario Golf/Tennis are similar to 2D platformers almost in that they're arcade-y games and as such I think people balk at their price in a way they didn't used to. So I wonder if there's crossover between those devaluing an arcade experience, those devaluing a Nintendo game as kiddy, and those interested in primarily sim versions of games--and even then for Tennis I get the impression the audience is smaller than for golf (sims) but I don't have data to back that up.

Idk how you can't be excited for NX thinking of all the games we could be getting. We could get any of these games listed.

Nintendo EPD:
Zelda: Botw
3D Mario
2D Mario
Animal Crossing?
Splatoon 2?
Mario Kart
Pikmin 4
Wario game
Metroid
F-Zero

Monolith Soft:
New JRPG- Finished XCX back in early 2015. Probably won't have anything ready though.

NST:
Mario vs. DK! lol
Wave Race

Retro: They have to have something to show at the NX reveal
Metroid
DK
New IP
Star Tropics lol

Next Level Games:
Rumored to have Luigi's Mansion 3 coming to NX

It would be great if any of these studios had a new big IP to show off.

Don't forget third party devs like Square with maybe KH3? FFVIIR? Ubisoft with Beyond Good and Evil 2? There's a lot to look forward too. I can't wait to see the trailers.

Ubisoft will probably have something to present. Warner Bros too and Square like I mentioned before. Maybe another team up with Platinum for...Bayonetta 3! ;)

Yep it was a prank.

HAHA VERY FUNNY :'(

It's just shooting fish in a barrel, which makes it much meaner than the average prank, like that one European publication which published that "joke" interview with CDProject Red about how excited they were about NX.

It's times like these that remind me that I really need to learn Photoshop.

The lenght of the detachable controllers is something i touched upon several times. About 4'' give or take seems like a good compromise, not too short as to affect comfort and not too long as to make the device bulky. The recent rumors about the 6.2'' screen size strenghtens that belief because it would mean the upper and lower bezel of the device wouldn't be too wide with a controller lenght of such size.

Absolutely is something to see/feel by oneself. Since Nintendo can mold or 3D print all the models they want maybe through iteration they found a sweet spot in terms of the distance between stick and face buttons. However, from experience, when operating the controller in vertical orientation, either with lined or offset face buttons and sticks, more than 2'' of lenght between them becomes unconfortable. The mock ups we have, seem to place these elements even farther in some cases.

I just did a few measurements experiments based on the Gamepad's screen. I think that Nintendo will actually want to keep the bezel as thin as possible. The reports that there isn't a camera on the main unit may lend credence to this. Also, one of the main benefits of Samsung's free form display is an extremely thin bezel. Perhaps Nintendo ditched the elliptical-shaped screen, but still heard the criticisms of the Gamepad's ridiculous bezels and empty space.

All this in mind, I'm thinking slightly shorter than your suggestion. 3.5". This is about the height of a bezel-free Gamepad screen and also about the height of the 3DS XL bottom. So it would actually be workable as a portable at least as much as that device.

I think that keeping the controller attachments at that short length would help alleviate that uncomfortable amount of empty space between the circle pads and buttons/dpad that you reference. The other thing is that I think they could leave some empty space at the bottom (right in horizontal mode) and still have it be comfortable. I am testing this hypothesis on the Wii Remote which has space beneath the "2" button comparable to what I'm thinking. Personally, I can use the Wii Remote comfortably this way. In fact, I even find it playable with a Motion Plus attached, but that's a bit extreme.

Yes, if each detachable half had the same button lay out of a SNES pad, adding to the fact that the each of them would have as extras Analogue Stick and motion sensing, then it would open the opportunity to have a wide pallete of games of different complexities and genres to experience in multiplayer out of the box.

As consolation, the mock ups that at least put 1 Wii Remote like trigger in the underside at least could have a compromised SNES like functionality. 1 shoulder less but six degrees motion sensing and an analogue stick more.

Well yes, i think there are mock ups that do just that. Basically those would be triggers, the difference here is that Nintendo would be putting an extra one, that would not be operational when the detachable half is held verticallly. But both are usable in NES style mode. i think eating the cost of that extra button would be worth it.
I agree that it would be worth it. The other thing they could do is one long paddle, but with different switches on the circuit board inside that pick up whether you are pressing on the top or bottom. With a shorter controller, these would be reachable by at least the ring finger and pinky even when held vertically.

The other interesting thing about these 3.5" controllers is that they might even be able to attach long ways. That would give you a single controller about the length of a Wii Remote able to be used horizontally or vertically. They wouldn't even need to connect physically, but there could be a silicon or plastic shell to hold them next to each other.

This was brought up before but there's some things to consider:
  • Assuming a width of about 1.2'' to 1.5'' when the controller is vertical and attached to the NX, it would make it hard for the index finger to reach it.
  • The middle finger does have more reach but then those buttons would need to be formated as Triggers in this case. Maybe it could work.
  • However, when adding shoulders to the touch screen part itself adds so much extra functionality to a potential "touch screen only" mode, that it might be worth it for Nintendo to eat the costs.
I definitely think that two shoulder buttons would come in handy for games that only use the center NX unit. With the width of the controllers around 1.25", they would be nearly the same width as the Wii Remote and sides of the 3DS XL. I'd imagine these shoulder buttons would be just as reachable as ZL and ZR on a new 3DS.They'd be a bit further in than the new3DS ZL/ZR, but still reachable. Of course, we should also wonder if there are going to be optical sensors on the controllers. Digitimes, if their report is worth anything, has repeatedly insisted that PixArt have been sourced as a supplier for something.

No mush, very tactile and clicky response. No stress on the thumb trying to do street fighter moves.

Here is a fun thing to do with those with Vita's. Flip it upside down and try to feel the controls, see how the placement of the analog sticks and buttons feel to get an idea of a Nintendo style layout (sticks above buttons). It feels surprisingly good!

I wouldn't count on seeing EAD Tokyo's new Mario or Retro's game when they unveil the NX.
Especially the former.
Anything can happen though.

Hm, not even a Donkey Kong Racing-style teaser? How come? It's been a while for both, and Miyamoto made it sound like we *could* be playing the next Mario late next year-ish at the earliest IIRC. They gotta January 2013 Wii U Direct in advance this time, right?

Miyamoto said they might show their new kind of Mario at the next E3.
As for Retro, I have no reason to be pessimistic, just that it's likely a big title that they'll take their sweet time before showing.

I'm not seeing it, especially Retro Studios. Nintendo wants to go all out. They don't want to make any mistakes and have another failure. Kimishima said software was a reason for NX to release in March, so I want to see all this software releasing with the system then.

Retro and EPD (Mario) will have been working on their games for over 3 years by the time NX launches. I don't expect Mario to launch since Zelda is there so I think there's a chance they don't show it until later. And I know Miyamoto said they may have something to show at E3, but I mean come on...this is Nintendo. Mario is their main character and they'll want to show something of his in some form for the NX.

We've been down that road with "Nintendo's going to show everything, they've been quiet" before and it didn't quite pan out.
I wish I could share your optimism but I expect a handful of games, a few very big ones when they finally show this thing.
Anything will be better than this current state of agony though.

That's fair. I guess I figured with vagaries of speech combined with vagaries of translation, not to mention minds changing, they might show Mario in teaser form at least then show it in detail at E3. I'm just an Nintendo-ptimist, though. :p

Also, regarding Retro, I think it's reasonable to say they already have taken their sweet time in showing it since we're 2.5 years out from DKTF's release already. I dunno. I feel like if it's a game that can get any core gamers' heads turned the best bet is to show it off at the reveal before people have started to make up their minds about NX.

This is why I mentioned the January 2013 Direct, though. Nintendo realized they hadn't shown enough of upcoming Wii U projects. Boom! They dropped bombshell after bombshell and then in February they did the same for 3DS. Those were two of the biggest months in Nintendo announcements in years.

I see what you're saying and yes anything is better than the agony we're in right now lol.

I feel like Retro Studios means a lot to western gamers. They're adored and considered one of the best studios out there. Whatever they're developing should have a trailer for at the NX reveal for western gamers, unless it's another Donkey Kong Country game lol!

Considering how the Wii u turned out, I doubt they are gonna fuck around this time. Inb4 you say this is Nintendo, the Wii U sold less than the fucking Gamecube. I don't think they're gonna reveal the NX carelessly.

I mean they're definitely not gonna announce a bunch of big games for launch because that would cannibalize their sales. However, I expect games to spread out evenly and some teaser trailers to increase hype.

Yeah, the Vita's D-Pad is perfect. I even like that it's a little small because it just melts under my thumb so perfectly.

Nintendo also ventured into HD gaming for the first time with the introduction of the Wii U, and that stalled them. We saw the same thing with the N64 and 3D, which helped to explain the sparse launch of that console.

On this go around, there's nothing new under the sun. No new technical standard in video and graphics they're obliged to learn and apply.

I think they'll show maybe one. E3 for Mario is likely based on Miyamoto's comment
If it's something worth getting excited about it might be worth to at least have a teaser for them
