In a nutshell, they suspected him of being a "Trumper" on a forum where any and all political dissident will get you permanently banned. The fact he wasn't a Trump supporter, and had merely been joking around on his twitter account is A: none of their damn business and B: quickly glossed over because choosing to post on GAF is also a bannable offense, generally. Black Chamber was an upstanding member of the community who was unfailingly gracious, and attempted to navigate the waters filled with magnetic mines without stepping on anyone's toes. This is not enough to save you in a community full of openly hostile zealots constantly looking for the faintest whiff of heresy.

I do feel bad for the trans members in general- the current world is very harsh on them. But the Era trans people did this to themselves.

It's on social media as well. They're only alienating themselves from other communities with their unstable behaviour. No wonder many people get annoyed by them. Including myself. I don't hate trans people, I hate anooying people. And most trans people are annoying.

Why is it that atheists, when shitting on religion, never talk about other faiths other than Christianity? Almost like Atheists are fucking cowards and only attack the easy target so they aren't branded as antisemitic or whatever.

The problem is they were the posters pushing the numbers. Even now the crazies like zeo, hobbes, excel with all the high post counts are the ones who post prolifically. Take them out (which they need to) and you'll lose that dwindling frenetic activity as well. The outrage mob is what makes it move like a twitch chat at times.

The only solution was to not get in this position to begin with. Having said that they could probably ban 10 of the biggest assholes and steady the ship.

I believe there's still a lot of normal peeps over there, who'd likely engage in more discussions if you didn't have to walk on eggshells before a Kyuuji, Excel, or ''ally'' explodes in your face and tells you to fuck off. But that would take acknowledging that these members are the problem.

As a follow up, they issued a mod post saying that if you suspect a fellow member of Era is a "Trumper" you should contact the mods. Which is frankly bonkers. You cannot have an official policy of encouraging members to dox each other and expose them for voting wrong. That's beyond the pale.

Era never formally added banning people for being Tories, being Republicans, stuff like that to the ToS, but it became the unwritten rule on the forum after 2018. The problem this creates is that no matter where you live on the planet, the only acceptable political stance is loving Joe Biden with all your heart and soul. This severely upsets communist and socialists and stuff. (Who accuse Era of being right-wing.) Because Era is ostensibly left-leaning, they thought the forum would be a safe place for them. Instead it's basically US Democrat HQ. That's why there's constant squabbling about Obama being a war criminal and stuff like that. Because while it's a fair argument that most US Presidents have been involved in war crimes, Era as a forum regards enthusiastic support for the US Democrats as essentially mandatory for membership, and being opposed to them is automatically being supportive of Republicans because 2 party system madness, and as a result people get stuck in a ban-trap.

It's a pretty decent example of the failures of contemporary intersectionalism. Era is full of people who despise each other, and instead of encouraging more moderate users who just want to talk about games in peace, they've attempted to craft this politically driven community. But the problem is that the more politically driven these subgroups are, the more they hate each other.

This is a good question, and I don't know what they can do at this point. Ultimately they need to draw a line in the sand and decide once and for all whether they're going to be a Gaming Forum or an Activist Forum. Because it's clear that both of these things can't co-exist, and Cyberpunk was only the first big domino to fall. They will continue to find more and more "problematic" elements with more and more games, until you can't discuss games in a positive light in any way. This may not be right around the corner, but it's not as far off as you might think.

If they decide on ResetEra being a Gaming Forum first and foremost, then they probably need to ban the 50-or-so most toxic users on there and hope everyone else who sucks either follows them to wherever they scamper off to, or they stop performing. Because the toxicity is really pervasive. Back when I really cared about still posting on there, I hit the maximum of 1,000 ignored users and I'd have liked to have added a few more to the list. I think the majority of the visitors on Era aren't deranged - some of the recent poll results seem to indicate this - but the volume of regular posters on there who are shitty is non-trivial.

Hundreds of posters were banned during the lead up to Cyberpunk for trolling and dismissing transphobia. Nobody was happy then.

Now dozens will be banned after the release of CP2077 for trolling and excessive hostility. Still nobody is happy.

Era might as well make this their motto: "Bans will continue until morale improves."

Era's ignore function is fundamentally flawed because if someone ignores all the bad actors, those bad actors will shout at them to "read the room" when trying to derail a thread. There's a kind of "ignoring is violence" subtext going on, too.

I don't think there's a right answer here without overhauling the nature of the site. When certain communities acted up on Gaf back in the day, Evilore would just delete them outright, and it worked because the site was largely too big to fail. Rockband-gaf, NBA-gaf, etc. Sure, there'd be a bit of backlash and people going off to start their own sites that would usually fail, but before long people would forget and things would be back to normal.

If B-dubs tried to pull something like that and just ban all the trouble-makers, you'd see a larger blow up from the normal members like what happened during the Ketkat issue last year. It would eventually be under control, but a chunk of the userbase would be gone. The question is how big a chunk. If it was only like 1/10th or so, that's more than salvageable. But rules would need to change after that. Things would have to be more lax, even if not to the extent of modern Gaf. It's hard to predict what kind of reaction that would have with the current userbase.

Me personally? I'd probably do the latter and just ban all the trouble makers and lock the subsequent callout threads, with some further temp bans if necessary. I'd take time writing up a thread stating "there's gonna be some changes around here" and detail some pretty big policy updates (removal of the banned game list being one of them). Make it clear that the site, while still trying to be as progressive as possible, will be a video game forum first and foremost, and a safe space second. There will still be rules against hate speech and bigotry in general, but there won't be vague shit like "bad faith" accusations or assumptions on trolling except when it's very clear. If all that leads to people leaving and trying to make yet another spin-off site, so be it. Things would stabilize eventually and growth would return, even if it may take a while.

Get rid of this ridiculous idea that the forum is a "safe space hugbox" specifically for minorities to vent their grievances. Ban anyone that calls people nazis etc. Remove all the pronoun garbage. Make it a video game forum where video games are the main discussion, and any attempts to SJW it are shut down instantly.
