Resident Evil 6 has gone gold

Honestly, there aren't many games with great cover systems, Vanquish obviously being the definitive exception. It's not only completely, effortlessly functional, but fully required even on lesser difficulties.

I disagree. Gears have a very cover system, probably one of the best for the type of gameplay.

It's snappy, responsive and most importantly, compliments and enhances the gameplay. That's what Capcom should have been aiming for with their cover system, instead they made it overly cumbersome and something that doesn't compliment or enhance gameplay.

Hmm let's see what games have good cover systems, just off the top of my head:

Gears of War
Uncharted (YOU HEARD ME BUSTER)
Mass Effect

Games that had terrible cover systems:

Rainbow Six Vegas (I couldn't stand having to hold the button down to stay in cover)
Metal Gear Solid 4 (trying to take cover and shoot was the equivalent of trying to play the fiddle on the Dual Shock 3)
Killzone 2/3 (first person cover doesn't really work, and you still got shot the hell up when you were behind cover)

As long as the cover system is easy to use (a single button press) and protects you from incoming fire, I'd say it's a good cover system.

Really hope this game sells a lot worse than RE5. Deep in my heart I hope it bombs but that is not gonna happen. So I can only hope the sales go down compared to 5 and with that get Capcom to rethink the direction they're going with the series.

RE6 will be btw. the first RE for a long time that I won't be getting on day 1. Funny indeed, as I used to buy whole consoles only because of RE (GameCube).

Every time I play Gears of War 3, I cry a little because I know how worse every other cover system is. It took them 3 games but they really perfected it now. So fast, fluid, responsive, and intuitive. So easy to cancel out of or adjust on the fly. Never have to press 2-3 different buttons to run/roll/crouch/get into cover, you just DO it. With one button. And it fucking works.

Gears is one of the better systems. Not a huge fan of the game, but can't deny they really improved it with each iteration.

Couple other games on the horizon that look to have great cover systems:

Splinter Cell Blacklist
The Last of Us

Both of these games look incredibly fluid to get in and out of cover... no jank whatsoever... little or no UI prompts. And TLoU is one of the few games where the protagonist faces the cover instead of the usual back-to-cover which never really made sense to me, unless you're standing, or "hiding" from bullets.

Agree with Gears of war. Can't repeat it enough times for Vanquish. But ME1 and ME2's cover system is bad.Really bad.The first one is atrocious while the second one is unresponsive as hell.

No opinion on Uncharted and (ironically because of what thread this is) RE6.

Mass Effect has terrible gameplay all around. So clunky. I'd say it's worse than RE6.

I don't know, I thought the gameplay in the first was pretty good. Janky but did the job, especially when you factor in the various powers. Got worse with each sequel though. :/

The combat in the first Mass Effect was pretty wonky, but you played it more for the story and RPG elements than for the combat. The cover system/combat system was MUCH improved in ME2/3. ME3 even has a full-fledged horde mode that is pretty rad, due in large part to the slick combat system.

odd choice, Gears of War 3 has a definitive cover system. I actually found Vanquish's to be somewhat cumbersome.

Media blackout commencing in 3........ 2........ 1......

From what I've played, Leon's campaign is my favourite. Really get an old-school Resi vibe from it. Proper zombies and insane tension levels. Great fun!

If you're referring to the part of IGN's vid where they say they can't show the "menus", then yeah, not allowed to show those because they aren't finished (we decided against taking video for fear of spoilers), but the HUD itself probably won't change much, if at all.

Jesus Christ. It's not really good by any measure, it's by far the worst cover system I've encountered in a game.

So did you try the stuff I mentioned about using the slide to slide in to cover and how when you are running you automatically climb on/jump off/jump through any context sensitive actions you encounter?

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=41432363&postcount=358

Because, and I cannot stress this enough, if you have not been sliding in to cover you have not been using the cover system.

(There is no point in using the cover system in the demo - I just do on principle (I did in mass effect as well!) - but it really does feel pretty good once you get the hang of it. But you have to slide.)

I still say that RE6 looks like the perfect combination of RE4 and RE5, but with updated gameplay. Based on what I have seen, I also think that some of the enemy designs are easily the best the series has seen thus far. Some really twisted looking stuff. It's looking really good.

It really is excellent. I can't stress enough how they've nailed the tension of the earlier games (especially with Leon's campaign). Chris' is more Resi 5, really, but Jake's is a mix of the two.

Well, that spells win for me then. I need that demo.

I've been surprised to see more and more enemies with new previews. I love all the different zombie variety types and I've even seen stuff in this new footage that I really didn't expect to see.

Jake's stuff looks fucking awesome in the new preview, really reminds me of Resident Evil 2
with the big motherfucker stalking you and the bits on the train and stuff

Yeah, the enemy variety is quite impressive and some of the designs are more twisted than ever. Some almost demonic looking shit going on. So glad to see that darker tone.

Hype has reached critical mass...

I don't mean to over-hype it, by the way...but I still - even now - can't get over the ambition of this title. It's HUGE.

You cannot over-hype RE... it's RE.

damn a lot of screen tearing in the Xbox 360 version. PS3 version seems tear free in the IGN footage.

I voiced concerns over that actually, was told they worked on that for the final build of the game. You do actually get used to it as you play though, oddly.

Actually looks really smooth now! The framerate is fairly consistent and I'm not seeing tearing.

You weren't kidding. That's awful. 360 typically comes out on top with MT Framework titles so I find this particularly surprising. What's going on?

Are you on a preview build or is this based on the 360 demo? But yes, I would say it is indeed pretty damn ambitious considering all of the campaigns and features. It really looks like the ultimate Resident Evil experience with gameplay that has finally been updated. I'm pretty excited, to say the least.

Preview build :-)

You see people! The game is gonna be good - and that makes forcing a change in the camera system against the wishes of the designers look pretty retarded doesn't it.

I agree. I loved those clips of
Jake hiding with it looking around for him
. This has been my most anticipated game of the year, especially with Bioshock delayed (again) until next year.

Despite some predictable backlash and such, I feel like Capcom is handling things very admirably (so far). They weren't too quick to announce the release date, they've constantly released new media, they bumped the release date up unexpectedly an entire month and a half, and the media makes it look really good. Only thing that really sucked was the 360 getting the demo months ahead of PS3 which is just dumb as all hell.

I'm just so used to 3+ year advance announcements, no screens or video previews for very long stretches of time, delays, wondering if it's actually coming out, etc. By all accounts I think RE6 has been by far the least frustrating "wait" for a game this entire gen. All studios should handle it like Capcom has handled RE6. I don't usually have great things to say about Capcom but I have to give credit where it's due.

I thought as much. Please feel free to say what you can without breaking any kind of NDA. That would be most welcome.

I'm pretty much free to talk about the first two chapters of each campaign, to be honest!

It's a real testament that when I "ran out of content" to play, I was gutted - really wanted to see what happened next, haha.

Leon's was my favourite, Jake's is interesting because of the bits people have put in spoiler masks so far!

I wrote a 1500 word preview, but I dunno if that's cool to link to on here? Self promotion and the like!

Whoah whoah whoah now. If the 360 version is going to have terrible screen tearing while the PS3 version will not, then I will switch my pre-order to the PS3 right here and now...

Is it spoiler-free? Please tell me it is spoiler-free.

Good point. I would much prefer an announcement when they know that they are going to get the game out in no less than a year. The perfect amount of time to market, build hype and then ultimately give people the game. Announcing a game years in advance, then delaying it tends to really water down my interest because of everything else that gets put in the spotlight. Good job and a good year, Capcom. First they release the amazing Dragon's Dogma, and now RE6 looks set to melt faces.

You can certainly link it if people are asking.
