Resident Evil Revelations >>> Resident Evil main games (outside of 4)

Gamer79

Predicts the worst decade for Sony starting 2022
I am playing through these games for the first time on steam and they are better than all the main Resident Evil games outside of 4 in my opinion. It has all the good elements of Resident Evil and takes out the bad bits.

+Less Puzzles; I always felt the puzzle elements of Resident Evil were always the weak points. They always felt like an unnecessary element that slowed the pace of the games. There are a few in this tame but Forest Gump could solve them.
+Episode Based: I like how in Revelations each chapter is split into episodes and can even get Graded based on performance
+Gameplay: Most of the gameplay is based on utilizing your weapons, killing enemies and progressing the story. Revelations just has a very smooth flow on the gameplay
+Silly Story: All Resident Evil stories have these cheesy over the top stories. The one is these are no exception and even cover what Chris, Jill, and others were up too while Leon in 4 was doing his thing.
+Just fun: If you like Resident Evil it's impossible not to like these. The characters, the gameplay, the story, just hits all the right notes.
+Classic: Some would use the term "dated" because these titles go back to the mid 2000's but they hit all the right notes that older games hit. Gameplay shines here with no corporate bullshit trying to shovel DLC down your throat.

IDK, the only thing I remember from Revelations is it being pretty visually impressive for the 3DS.
Even RE5 and 6, which I played even longer ago, left more of an impression (they might not be what I want from RE, but they are decent co-op action games)

I am torn on this. Raid mode might be one of the best additions I've ever played in Resident Evil, quite possibly better than Mercenaries.

However, the Revelations 1 and 2 campaigns were both a bit...messy. I think constantly flashing back and forth between multiple characters and timelines, instead of just having Campaigns A and B, hurt both games' structure. A lot of people like to comment on how good the ship setting was, to which I highly agree, but people either ignore or don't remember the oddly placed the Chris snow missions and the office building missions in Rev 1.

It's better than Revelations 2, that's for sure. Amazing setting with the ship, and honestly deserved bigger production values/budget.

Some of the worst monster design in the series along with 7 though. No, I don't want to fight shitty bulbus ooze blobs.

I don't agree in the slightest. Also, if you think Rev1 is reminiscent of classic RE, you couldn't be further from the truth. Rev1 is nothing like RE1-CV. It doesn't even have inventory management, the item box is to simply change your weapon loadout.

Revelations 1 is largely a turd. Way too long, terrible map system, it's just boring. That being said, I still prefer it over RE5 & 6 but I'd prefer to play none of them.

Rev2 is a total gem, though. Love that game.

I personally think 4 is way overrated and honestly quite boring. I think the fact it introduced that over the shoulder camera angle let's it get a pass, like Mario 64 and 3D gaming, in a sense.

I liked Revelations 1, when it was no longer Nintendo exclusive, but I enjoyed 2 more. Maybe it was playing it co-op that tipped it. I also enjoyed their score based mode, too, that I forgot the name, but it wasn't Mercenaries. Plus 2 has big bad Barry.

You've listed a bunch of things you don't like about the classic Resident Evil formula and you think Revelations lacking those things means fans of Resident Evil should like it. That's completely backwards logic.

I don't think you know what makes a Resident Evil game at all. You seem to just want a random generic 3rd person shooter in level format because you value regular feedback.

I love Rev1, I agree with you for the item management this is a good point, didn't liked 2 that much, what do you like in 2?

Revelations is horrible imo. The first game has terrible gameplay, esp when translated to console. Having to scan shit before you can pick it up? gfto. Everything outside of the ship is a mess. Both locations and characters. Boring enemies, bad controls.

Rev 2 is low budget as hell. It really fell off a cliff once I played it in one go and not episodic. Its very boring.

Agreed. They were impressive handheld entries - Revelations on the 3DS in particular was really quite special - but their side modes were the real star, for me. Revelations 2's campaign wasn't great, but by God did I put a lot of hours into its Raid mode. Super fun.

I like the story in Rev2 and the combat, but what I like in the story is mainly just Barry. I feel like they did Claire dirty in Rev2 because she falls for a total dork, but Barry's portrayal is spot on and an awesome follow up to RE 1996.. I like Moira too though she does curse a bit too much. Moira's side of the story lends well to the Barry sections because that game is largely Barry and Moira's story.

Rev2 brought a sense of humanity back into the series. 4,5,6 are so over the top and so are the characters. I like the characters in Rev1, it's mostly the gameplay that I don't like. It's simply too long and drawn out.

Rev2 was such a step in the right direction from 5, 6, & Rev1. The series was at it's lowest when it released and it gave a lot of us hope that Capcom was trying to reel the series back in.

My favourites are the oldies OP _ specially 2 and Veronica _ never played revelations, but i think I've got them in plus and thanks to you im gonna give them a try.
I miss playing some Resi games for a change... Revelations it is then, thanks OP!

Just imagine an Resident Evil 9 Raid mode in RE Engine with maps, enemies, and characters from RE 2R, RE 3R, RE 4R, RE 7, and RE 8.

I'd automatically put RE 9 in my top 3 all time RE games if it had a Raid mode like that.

1-4, 7, Village > Revelations and I’ll die on that hill. After hearing “Mayday, mayday, this is the Queen Zenobia” over and over again followed by the handheld graphics of Revelations. I’d rather not put it at the top of any RE list. Revelations 1 & 2 are good, but they never had the impact of the rest of the franchise besides 5 & 6.

RE4 and RE2 the 🐐

For me Resident Evil 8 is a close second

Which is a surprise since I hardly play any FPS

Having to go through that haunted house with the creepy doll and creepy ass Demonic Baby Fetus thing was scary as fuck. And taking away your guns at the beginning of that section so all you can do is run and hide. Capcom you Sly Bastards

I played all the mainline Resident Evil Games including the Revelations games three years ago for the first time

Revelations is what RE4 was supposed to be, in my opinion. Sure, have more action, but throw the OG fans a bone with the Jill segments. I like the first one a lot too... I also like RAID mode more than Mercenaries. Final boss is kinda bullshit, lorewise, but oh well: it is Resident Evil.

They're not better than the mainline series, but they are still pretty great. Definitely feel like classic Resident Evil. Wish we could get a 3rd one already.

I hold first 4 Resies in high esteem. R5 misfired due to weak AI for Sheva in SP mode. RE7 started strongly and deflated like Titanic. RE8 was really weird mishmash ( The Munsters gallery) that really didn't gel at all.

RE Revelations 2 was like watching paint dry. Super tedious and super boring. Didn't try Rel 1.

Edit: Looking forward to RE9 open world implemented in RE-Engine :D:D:D.

I really enjoy Revelations (especially raid mode) but I would never put it on the same level as RE1 (original and REmake), RE2 (both versions). RE4 I loved the original when it came out but after a bunch of replays I sorta lost my taste for the game, but I really enjoyed the remake when I didn't expect to. I still haven't played Revelations 2 that much but I've got it installed to play anytime. These days I would definitely say my favorite game in the series is REmake. I don't feel like it gets much better than that game.

dat ass was the best thing about revelations. not sure if we will ever see something like this in a RE again. it also had lots of problems, for example the enemies were trash just like the mold from RE7. both games have the same director so i hope RE9 which he will also direct won't make the same mistake again and give us something closer to ganados or zombies. the story was also really really bad.

imagine saying an action adventure has too many puzzles... the defining element of the fucking genre...

What did you love about Rev 2? Something about it didn't quite click for me so I'd be interested in hearing a different perspective. Raid is amazing, though. I still occasionally fire it up and play the daily missions.

Edit: I noticed only after I asked for your opinion that you already answered this question from someone else. I can see why Barry's role and portrayal in the game would be a high point, for sure.

Of the ones I've played :

Tier 1 RE Games

Resident Evil 1 Remake - One of the greatest remakes of all time. Still looks amazing today due to the super pre-rendered artwork and excellent ports.
Resident Evil 4 OG - One of the greatest games of all time.
Resident Evil 2 Remake - Outstanding remake that improved upon 95% of the OG.

Tier 2 RE Games

Resident Evil 2 OG - Premise, setting and story were all incredible. Loved the puzzles.
Resident Evil 4 Remake - Incredible remake but was missing a lot of the Leon charm, banter and goofiness of the OG, which detracted from it for me.
Resident Evil 3 OG - Nemesis.

Tier 3 RE Games
Resident Evil 7 - This would have been Tier 1 had it not been for the ship section and the lack of enemy variety.
Resident Evil Zero - An enjoyable experience, mostly, but the lack of a storage box brings it from a Tier 2 to a Tier 3 for me.
Resident Evil 5 - One of the best CO-OP experiences in gaming. Has it high moments, but otherwise pretty forgettable.
Resident Evil 1 OG - The one that started it all. Superseded in every way by 1Remake though.

Tier 4 RE Games

Resident Evil Revelations - The setting was great. Other than that, it was fine.
Resident Evil Village - Like RE5, it had it's high points, but most of it was forgettable including the story. Ethan annoyed me no end in this one.
Resident Evil 3 Remake - Had this not been a Remake, it would have been a Tier 3 RE title. As it's a Remake, it falls flat on it's face.
Resident Evil 6 - Nope.

Tier 5 RE Games

Resident Evil - Operation Raccoon City - Nope.
Resident Evil - Revelations 2 - Nope.
Umbrella Corps - Nope.

I really like Revelations - the setting, the music, the over the top story, and the characters all appeal to me. That said, I think of it as complementary to the mainline games. We get to play a little more with characters like Jill and Chris and its structure and game play provides a different experience than the main games - which is something I appreciate about the RE series as a whole. They change it up and try new things which keeps it interesting for me.
