Retro Studios working on fucking Donkey Kong

And the millions of people who loved the game all disagree with you. Once you get over your phobia of motion controls I'm sure you'll find that they worked quite well in DKCR.
I just played through dkcr for Wii and I thought the shaking to roll was terrible. Motion controls were useless compared to a game like skyward sword

There's enough smart people here that we could deduce whether Retro has 2 teams at this point.

I remember one of their artists (formally of Naughty Dog?) said he is working on his most impressive project yet. Does it make sense that it would be a DKC game? I also remember they hired an online network person, so if DKC:TF doesn't have anything more than Miiverse support, a strong case could be made that a 2nd game is indeed in the works.

Any thoughts on this?

There's got to be Retro people reading this thread?

I wonder what they think about the 'you're too good for this' comments? It's like telling someone they're too good for their wife or something, complimentary but insulting at the same time.

People just wanted Retro to be one the teams that "pushed the platform" early on. When teams like Monolith Soft and PG are showing off X and Bayonetta, they expected Retro to respond in kind, so as not be outdone.

The simple truth is that Nintendo should not have kept this game secret, especially since the remake was announced last year. Expectations were way too high to settle for a DK sequel.

I would agree with you but at this particular juncture Nintendo needs a more well-rounded portfolio and Retro is one of the few studios that could bring something radically different to the table for them.

What I don't understand is why it's all on Retro's shoulders to do something different. Any of Nintendo's companies can also do new and exciting things. And I mean, you have X, Bayonetta 2, Wonderful 101, Pikmin 3 all coming for the Wii U as well which is a nice variety of genres as well, on top of Wii Party and Wii Fit which are the casual sellers.

I can honestly see the reasoning why people are disappointed in Super Mario 3D World, but I feel like Retro and Tropical Freeze are the victim of some weird hivemind expectation that people built up on their own instead of just waiting and seeing what Retro was developing.

The motion controls added absolutely NOTHING to the game. They were completely unnecessary and only got in the way. They were obviously just told to use waggle at some point in the game. It made no sense.

All this talk about a second title/second team is nothing but pipe dreams.

Reggie confirmed that this is what Retro has been working on. This is what they have shown.

It's fair to say that DKC is it.

Especially when said wife is fucking awesome and sexy to boot. It's like people collectively forgot how amazing a game DKCR was.

Motion controls being used to do something that wouldn't be possible through a more traditional control method is fine. Motion controls that are optional are also fine. Waggle in place of what could have (and should have) just been a button press is shitty. Don't assume I have a 'phobia' because I prefer controls to be precise. They could have easily given the player the option to assign it to a button, but they didn't for whatever bizarre reason. That many people were fine with it proves nothing. Lots of people enjoying the Transformers movies does not make them cinematic masterpieces.

We saw alot of big industry names join retro, seems clear now they joined retro due to the industry and not because of fantastic games.

It more than motion controls added nothing. They were to the actual, serious detriment to the game. It's not like the waggle moves were optional - you had to use them to get past certain sections.

And more retarded was the fact that even on the Wiimote, there were physical buttons that could have been used in its place.

I saw this as someone who loved the motion control / waggle implementation in Mario Galaxys and NSMBWii. It just stunk the game up in DKCR.

Unless it was an arranged marriage and they're thinking the same thing.

If you think it's impossible for motion controls to be precise enough to use for binary actions, then you have an irrational phobia and you need to get over yourself. When implemented well, as they were in all of Nintendo's first party releases, they feel no different than pressing a button.

The only people who are genuinely angry that Retro are making a new DKC game are people who didn't play Returns. It was an amazing game and a David Wise-scored sequel is pure mana from heaven to me. If there is going to be a DKCR sequel then I wouldn't want anyone except Retro working on it.

Anyway I'm sure Retro's other team is beavering away on something else. Remember that they have developed Mario Kart 7 and contributed to other titles over the last few years, they aren't a one project team.

Or...people who find it baffling that Nintendo thought this was a huge surprise that no one would see coming.

I guess they got it kind of right. No one saw them making a move this baffling.

Regardless of the fact that the game will be incredible, it was crushingly disappointing. Like most of that Nintendo Direct in general.

Baffling? Making a sequel to a critically and commercially super successful game is baffling? Its business sense and the leads have already said they wanted to explore the concept more creatively. Best of both worlds. People believing new IP or star tropics let as a near guarantee let themselves get carried away by a wave of internet rumor bullshit.

On one hand I really wanted to see a new IP revealed today from Retro. On the other hand, this looks really good.

I just hope there's another team working on another game too.

Here's the thing. This is entirely on everybody who "expected more" and not on this game or Retro. Nintendo has a well-established habit of not revealing games/what studios are working on until a few months before said games are going to be released. They don't advertise two, three years in advance like other companies, and this is a known fact. But for some reason everyone has elevated Retro to this level of "oh, they're so great, they're the savior of Nintendo" so when Retro game's was unannounced, instead of going "oh, they'll tell us what they're working on when it's close to release" like any other Nintendo game, everyone went "oh it's a big secret Retro must be working on SOMETHING AWESOME."

Which, I mean, they were, because DKC:TF is awesome. It just apparently wasn't the TOTALLYAWESOMEWTFBBQOMGTHISGAMESHITSMONEYANDGIVESMEBLOWSJOBS game everybody built up Retro to be making in their minds.

hahahahaha

but seriously... a DKC game by retro is hilarious. What a waste of talent on shovel-ware (IMO).

Did you see the videos? Equating this game to shovelware? Okay, I'm going to have to leave this thread or it's going to give me an aneurysm.

The idea that DKCR: Tropical Punch is beneath Retro, or that Retro "deserves better," or even that the game isn't worth making is simply nonsense. I'm sure the game will be at least as good as the first one (which was pretty damn great), and will likely have a better soundtrack, and will sell well. Being disappointed because you wanted to see them do something new is one thing, but some of the statements and implied statements towards this game are a bit much.

I will agree it's disappointing that Retro isn't doing something new, but it makes me feel like a douche because I know the game will be quality, and it makes me afraid that we won't get another DKC game of this quality for a long time afterwards because of the generally negative/apathetic response.

Not a fan of the genre-ism going on in this thread. Its OK to have a million shooters in the market but holy shit God forbid we have a healthy amount of platforming games! Cant have that!

Serious amount of butthurt. Saw the game on the floor today and it looks incredible by any standard.

It's just sort of a boring decision both to:
a) make another DKC, when we just had a 3DS version of the revival, a 2D Mario game, a 2D Yoshi game on the way, and Rayman in the future, and
b) put Retro on it again.

So far they've been copying the DS/Wii playbook to a fault (and arguably diminishing returns).

That coupled with high expectations result in self-inflicted disappointment.

Looking at videos of this game, directs, it actually looks freaking amazing.

Again, first look of the game did not do it justice. Looks brilliant.

Can't wait.

Yes I would have preferred for them to work on something new, but this isn't bad at all. It's great.

Wow, jesus christ. DKCR is one of the best platformers ever made, has more creativity in a single level of a single world than a lot of games have over their entire spans.

I can only assume you never actually played the original or you would realize how totally asinine it is to call this "shovelware" good lawd.

The more i see this(watch ddirect on eshop), the more its becoming a game i really want.

Not sure why they would keep this game a secret. They should of announced this earlier and left X to be revealed at e3.

Maybe they were going to hold out on X for e3(since the first trailer was premature), but all that early negative wii u news probably pushed them to announce it early.

People going fucking crazy here, just it's not their beloved startropics reboot or that crazy, unlikely Star Fox x F-Zero crossover (which makes Nö sense and is never going to happen, guys, get real, people!).
Who cares if Retro is working on this new game, It's motherfucking donkey Kong, man!
can't tucking wait!

I think this would have been a much better idea. Unveiling X would have caused much more excitement.

I was disappointed at first, then i watched the dev direct and trailer on the Wii U on think it looks great. Definitely excited now

People are acting like this game was created yesterday. The Wii U selling the way it is had no bearing in this titles development. It's been in the works for a while and was even allegedly supposed to be shown at last year's E3.

They didn't look at the Wii U and think "Oh crap is selling bad let's fix it with Donkey Kong!"

It was probably more like "Let's create an awesome Donkey Kong game for our fans that's fucking fun"

I know it's disappointing its not something brand new, or what everyone's hype wanted it to be but it's a sequel to one of the best 2D platformers I've played since the SNES..

I'll never cease to be amazed by fucking idiots who think games start development on, or shortly before announcement. Most do not, especially Nintendo games, but there are exceptions (Smash, I'm looking at you!).

It's telling that rather than just being precise, you have to say 'precise enough.' And you say shaking a controller feels no different than pressing a button? Apparently I'm one of the magical few that can tell the difference. Shaking a controller is less precise because it requires more motion and more time to shake an object with your hands than it does to move a single finger the tiny distance it takes to press a button. I don't know how you could possibly argue otherwise.

Whiners' tears are sustaining me. Keep it coming. DKC Fruity Berry couldn't look better, camera angles and Trixie look totes amazing, and David Wise back on board... nom nom nom.

Retro is a pretty small studio, it's strange how anyone here thought they would be working on some kind of AAA shit. I think these kind of projects is what suit them best.

I'll admit I was a bit letdown when I heard this is what Retro is working on. That said, I really want to play it now that I've seen it. And David Wise being back is great, his work on the DKC games is among my favorite game music.

I wonder how the reaction would be if the original Metroid Prime was released for Wii in place of DKCR and Echoes was just announced for Wii U.

DKCR is one of the finest platformers ever crafted. Not only are we getting a sequel on vastly-improved hardware (which never happened with Metroid Prime), someone, somewhere at Nintendo reached out to David Wise. Does anyone realize how fucking batshit insane that is? For that reason alone, I have to think that some person or group of people at Nintendo wanted this game to be fucking special. On top of all the platforming brilliance of the original DKCR...that's why I'm really excited.

All-fucking-in on this one.

Yeah I mean people get emotional so I can't blame them too much but at the same time they need to dial it back a bit.

This game was in development for a while. Years even. They didn't create this to combat the Wii U sales and acting like this could have been made for that reason in such a short period of time is a spit in the face of Retro and the amount of talent and passion that's poured into these games. Making a high quality, faithful Donkey Kong game isn't easy.

Retro aren't going anywhere and we'll see more from them. After the work on DK hopefully they become more familiar with the hardware and can take full advantage of its capabilities.

For now our "hardcore fresh game" is in the form of X from Monolith Soft and it's going to rock along with Donkey Kong on the Wii U.

hahahahaha

Now this is just plain dumb. It's one thing to be disappointed that Retro is making this and not something else. Especially after people's expectations got out of hand and were looking to Retro to cater to them because they are Nintendo's big westerns studio. However it's really stupid to knock the quality of the actual game. No one should be doing that here. This game is going to be excellent period. You only end up making yourself look foolish.

I was disappointed but only because GAF had hyped me up for the past couple of years that Retro was working on a new IP.

After watching the demo of this in action I'm no longer disappointed as much. Obviously a new IP would have been great but there is no real reason to be disappointed with things on balance.

I blame you GAF for making me BELIEVE.

The only mistake with this was that it was kept secret. Don't try to hide sequels/remakes if the original came out within 5 (3?) years.
