Returnal Review Thread (PS5)

Returnal is a pretty damn bold combination of niche genres you wouldn't normally expect from a platform holder.

A third-person, AAA, rogue-like, bullet hell with a psychological horror sci-fi story? This is the type of shit Sony should be investing in. We have enough open world action-adventure IPs to last a lifetime.
I love Sony open worlds and i hope they will keep doing them, but i agree they need to also touch other style of games just like Returnal in this case.

Wow good scores! Nice to see PS5 get another Gears 5/Halo 5 tier game. I caved in the end and my copy should be here tomorrow. Can't wait!

Who cares, that's the game they want to make. Can't knock a game for something that's intentionally designed. It's like saying you don't like cheeseburgers because it has cheese on it. Can't call it a flaw if you don't like it.
Anybody should care. Maybe only a few people could sit and play game all day long, but for majority of people, we need to sleep, eat, and go to work. The saving option would have make their lives a lot easier. Skill up also fault the game for this in his review. Iam sure if you poll most reviewers, they would overwhelmingly say yes to saving option. I am sure there is a patch coming to adress this.

Not sure if the guy is trolling you, but no, Bayonetta is not intersex lmao. He completely made that up for some reason.

Dammit! I fell for it. I've never played the game but I remember only a very short cutscene on youtube showing her ass bumping on a horse saddle or something like that zooming at her ass. It's like a softcore porn game in disguise. :lollipop_tears_of_joy:

So you made up that claim? You have no ideia how it runs on your 'mid range' PC lol
Made up what claim?. Unless any PC port was one of the worst ports of all time then yes i could run the game at 1080p/60. I have a faster cpu, 32gb of ram, and a 980ti which has about 60% of the grunt of PS5's gpu. Returnal runs at 4k or dynamic 4k right?, so yes the game would run at 1080p/60 on my PC, maybe even 1440p.

yeah that no saving "feature" rubs me the wrong way. I was about to pull the trigger but thats a no go for me. I hate losing hours of progress due to "design" choices. I'm not saying that you start at your save point after dying, but at least let me start there when I have to do...you know, real life stuff. I cant just toss away all other responsibilities for several hours just to play a game. I need to be able to save and resume later. Rest mode is nice, but it bugs out too often and it would still not let me play any other game until I have finished a run.

Reall really weird design decision on their part.
And dont compare it souls games. The run between 2 checkpoints does not take hours.

Might laugh but the main video was about a review of Sony X900H TV and how its upscaling was good that even Switch games look sharp and very good. Happens to see that strange cutscene in the process. :lollipop_tears_of_joy:

We are seriously doing this again? I hoped that trend died with PS2.
Lol i still remember the ps2 controller and his 286 levels of button pressure (or what the fuck it was)...holy shit they never used any if that.

To be fair, here is a bit different tho, still a gimmick in the end.

Nothing to address, it's part of the ROGUE design. For it to be addressed, it has to be an issue. You don't have to play ALL day, the sections are not very long.

No I really can’t do that anymore, I switched to digital early last gen, can’t go back. Well maybe if you could transfer the physical licenses to digital somehow so you could put away the disc.

In Sweden:

PS Store: 849 SEK (€84 / $101)
Physical: 699 SEK (€67 / $83)

And that's why I bought a PS5 with disc drive (plus I can sell or lend my games). Sony can fuck off with these ridiculous digital prices. A digital copy of a game has a lower intrinsic value than a physical copy, and costs less to produce, so it should be cheaper. Until that happens I'm gonna keep resisting the digital revolution.

I can deal with the minimal hassle of switching discs.

It's no surprise this is going to hit a good nerve. It feels like an arcade Metroid/Contra 3rd person action game.

I don't know what else people want. You make shooters or 3rd person adventure games and irrational kids complain. You make a unique game and people find ways to poke holes.

The rest of us can enjoy games on all platforms and continue to want to see the industry thrive and grow for the better.

Currently at an 86, really happy for the game and team. I was going 80-85 and there's still a chance it could hit in that range once all the reviews are in, but I personally don't think it'll go below an 84.

Which is very good for a new IP; it might still give a lot of people pause on picking it up @ $70 but I think at least Souls players will bite since it sounds like a challenge right up their alley. There's a pretty good chance it'll get a sequel at some point where they can flesh any kinks and go deeper with lore/story.

You're right; unlike Souls this sounds like a game with actual challenge ;)

(Just taking a crack at the (IMHO) exaggerated "Souls-hard" takes over the years; those games don't really seem particularly difficult if you're observant and experimental)

Fugly face aside, the only real thing that keeps me from buying is the death mechanic which has you restart all the way at the first level.

Well, the reviews have fallen pretty much as I hoped and anticipated, so I’m super happy with that. The devs have been really clever with Returnal, because rather than release a sequel, they can just re-release the same game over and over lol

Good to see that the game is reviewing well. I would've bought it anyway, it's fucking Housemarque. Now all I need to do is get my hands on an actual PS5. That might be harder than beating this game.

Jokes about the main character aside, she does seem out of place based on what the gameplay looks like to me. After watching some gameplay this game kind of reminds me of Japanese action games. There's a lot of dashing, dodging projectiles and fast-paced shooting which differs from what I see in the usual slower and plodding third-person shooter games. If all I saw was the gameplay, I would assume an anime-like or otherwise Japanese-designed character was in the suit.

It does look like there's an opportunity for skillful and stylish gameplay, which I associate more with Japanese games.
