ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X launch October 16

It does "unlock" additional functionality/power/secret sauce, which I don't think is the case with these RoG devices when connected via a dock, right?

Yeah, it is really just a setting from what I understand. Clocks and memory bandwidth are lower in handheld mode and higher in the dock due to increased power. Really isn't about the dock though. That's my understanding anyway.

Doesn't the Switch dock allow for the image to be output at higher resolutions? Why can't they do the same with these docks?

The GPU doesn't change when docked. It just has more power. So it could probably output at higher resolutions without the dock, but it would require more juice from the battery and wouldn't last long. Switch controls all of this though and only toggles the higher resolutions when docked. Makes sense considering the built in display can't go higher than 1080p anyway.

Other handhelds have controls available to change the wattage and resolution whenever they want whether docked or not. I can plug my Legon Go S undocked into my TV at play at higher resolutions but again, it won't last very long.

The Phawx: Asus ROG Xbox Ally gets downloadable shaders, compatibility badge, Auto Super Resolution support

Sound very complete. Waiting for DF or other with performance comparasions.

Completely passed over that. I was simply looking at the official spec sheet where it just stated charger stand.

$100 is rough.
Any type C dock with PD and hdmi out works. They cost like, $20 on Amazon.

It has 2 type C ports so can also use a type C to display port cable instead. And use a controller or wireless KB/M directly.

Decent price. The z2 extreme benchmarks ive seen made my penis soft tho. I want that giant Lenovo one if anything. Ill wait for Topher Topher impressions before he returns it to best buy.
The biggest issue is that Z2E is like 10% better in games (give or take) vs Z1E. You can grab OG ROG Ally off eBay (or Topher Topher 's BestBuy return) for under $400.

Drop a 1Tb drive and upgraded battery for another $150ish and you got roughly equivalent device for ~$500-550. As a bonus, install Bazzite or SteamOS on top.

The Z2E Ally has the same 7" screen which just seems weird to me.

If anything the most interesting device is MSI Claw Intel version as with updated drivers it's normally faster vs Z2E devices. But it's still $900+ so kind of no point once again.

Any details on the OS experience?
The video is just a sneak peek at the features confirmed by MS. He's postponing a new video tomorrow or the day after when he can get more answers from MS and has thoroughly tested ROG Xbox Ally....

I think that to have a clear idea we will have to wait for more in-depth analysis and comparisons in DF or other sites. A lot of people is playing on Gamescom and some impressions should come soon.

I got you, Steam Deck was just too weak to output 4k image display but this $900 ROG Ally should be able to use the $100 dock to output at 4K.

$999? I rather you get a 5080S or a mini-PC with the more power Strix Halo 395+.

This is too much for a soon to be outdated APU
It's a mobile handheld device. Unfortunately between higher chip costs (thx TSMC), higher general production costs (thx inflation) and tariffs, all the Z2E devices are $$$.

Personally I just don't think it's worth it considering very minimal performance upgrades.

Not good enough solution for Xbox console games. I want my 360 library - series X library on there. Also still want to see how the OS handles "seamless" library integration.

As a general PC handheld it looks slick.

Edit 24 of my 400+ games are play anywhere. Weak.

???? It can for every game.
Yea I saw he tried running it native resolution on a couple 3d games and they became slideshow. I guess I was implying that it can't run non indies @ 4k native and actually run decently...but good to know it can still technically do it.

They don't care about "console" games, they are pivoting to PC....

Frame rate is another story. Depends on the game demand.

Let me introduce you to a wonderful world of emulation.

This is going to be weak too for a good 4K experience. One of my few reservations about preordering is the lack of an OCulink port to use when docked.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Phil Spencer and the Xbox family for allowing me to be part of the community and play the games. I would like to take a bow and thank Mr. Phil Spencer once again.

Which Deck? These have newer/different components (APU, higher res screen, higher refresh, etc.).

The Ally is similarly price to a Steam Deck. The Ally X is more expensive, but it has different specs.

Here: https://www.pcmag.com/comparisons/asus-rog-ally-vs-valve-steam-deck-which-gaming-handheld-is-better#

EDIT: and Valve subsidizes the Deck if I remember correctly.
And you don't think Sony didn't subsidize the PS5? How are you going to say the ps5 pro is worse value when the Ally X are even worse value compared to the Deck?

PS Portal? This is not a streaming extension.

Bro .. give it a rest already lol.

A decent budget windows PC is like $300-$350. Just attach a Keyboard/Mouse and monitor to this thing and you are good to go. Switch 2 + budget PC is about $750. Lower spec Xbox Ally expected to be around $550. Good value. I think a laptop(with Xbox UI) is the ultimate form for both Xbox console like gaming and productivity work.

So you were actually offended by the pro comment?

The pro is bad value compared to the base ps5. Especially so since it's digital only, and there are no games pushing the visual bar even on the base console. So the upgrades are minimal (though it's getting better).

The base ps5 digital price was 399. The pro launched at 699.

Ps4 and ps4pro had a 100 price difference. And there was total feature parity.

And the main point still stands: these Ally are not consoles, and are price correctly for what they are.
