ROG Xbox Ally and ROG Xbox Ally X launch October 16

Depending on how easy it is to install emulators and how well it performs, this could be the ultimate handheld playing games all the way back to the OG Gameboy.
I'm guessing probably good enough to emulate Switch 1, but no shot at Switch 2. If so, probably not every well.

Ally X is a phenomenal desktop replacement, it can run a 2160p Windows OLED display perfectly without an ounce of slowdown for general use, so it's a pretty complete package if you need something for more than just portable gaming.

I had a dock for my rog ally and would hdmi to tvs when I was travelling with work. Had a small little Bluetooth keyboard and mouse and could do Internet shit. Watch movies etc well.

These are powerful apus for more than just gaming. Even the z1 extreme is decent.

But in this case it's not a console, it's a PC handheld

They are going to need to do some optimizing for these handhelds so it should benefit Windows gaming in general

Is one step... We will see how It help.

In all fairness the sales of this will not come as much of a surprise to Microsoft. They are used to consoles that do not sell all that well. Plus they do not tell you the sales figures anymore.

They are not the vast majority unfortunately. 20 of the 400+ games I own are play anywhere.
You own 400+ Series X games?

What's really important it's the fact of being a rebranded Ally with absolutely nothing new. I can get a discounted Ally X for 500€ now, wtf I as an "informed customer" would buy this?

It's definitely not a rebrand of an existing Ally, though. Valid to get the Ally X at at discount, but this model gives you better performance via the newer SoC, better ergonomics, the NPU powered AI upscaling and you'll have to wait until next year for the optimized Windows experience to come on the Ally X.

It probably makes sense to wait for Black Friday deals. Or returns, if you guys are right and some consumers would find it can't play their console library.

Yeah, I've been using mine in a bit of a tortue test scenario, encoding UHD 4k movies to HDR AV1 mkv files, so basically running it at 100% CPU 24/7 for a day or more at a time, and it's been great. Only uses like 30W and spits out amazing looking files for my Plex server.

Already bought a handheld this year and next year will probably belong to Switch². I just hope, for their sake, that the gaming mode benchmarks well. If nothing else it's supposedly very comfy/has great ergonomics.

I'm still struggling to understand how they plan to make any kind of substantial profit off of this product. Increased Gamepass subs? 🤔

They won't plan on any hardware profit. It's pretty much an Asus device.

This serves multiple purposes for them:

- introduces the more handheld optimized Windows gaming experience to try to head off SteamOS incursions

- brings more traffic to GamePass and Xbox Store

- Basically get the Xbox audience used to some
Of the stuff they're going to push heavily for their actual next gen console. E.g Windows as the OS, multiple storefronts etc.

- use the NPU as the test bed for their 'Copilot in gaming' push.

Not if it doesn't play your Xbox games. PC handhelds should only be used with Steam for now.
It would be just a purely side thing. Its just too expensive for any kind of impulse purchase. I'm not buying anything for Switch ever again but 1st party so even with PA titles and other stores this would be a beast on the go. Just playing old stuff on GOG I don't have access to, or indies only on Steam, and Gamepass PA is a lot. Dont get me wrong, if it has full Xbox BC it would be 20x better but it would still be a secondary impulse purchase behind the console in importance.

Honestly looks pretty badass. I just am not sure I need one at that price.
Launching into the Game Pass app isn't that big of a deal IMO. Launchers have been around. What will be a big deal is how much improvement we get from games compared to the other handhelds. I want to know if the slim version of Windows 11 is the real deal.

It definitely too expensive for what they want you to use it for.

Xbox Play Anywhere games are a fraction of your library. You use Game Pass, and that's cool for indies and other non-demanding games, but AAAs will look or run like shit. It's just not a practical device for the price.

By this time next year we'll have new Xbox hardware and my assumption is the people that bought this will have serious buyer's remorse.

it also has a bigger screen

what will be interesting is what price the Legion Go 2 comes in at since it has more RAM and a larger OLED screen

didn't realize the Legion go 2 is none AI, probably means no AutoSR support, a feature that might be super useful for this kind of device to squeeze more power and performance out.

Yeah, its really just a novelty piece for the one time every 2 years I'm on a plane or want to play something in bed. If it was cheaper, sure.

What is Xbox's Handheld Compatibility Program?
This is a system that Xbox has created to indicate when a game has been optimized for handhelds. A game can either be marked with "Handheld Optimized" or "Mostly Compatible."

In a press release, Xbox clarifies what these badges mean:

  • Handheld Optimized: This indicates games that are ready to go—with default controller inputs, an intuitive text input method, accurate iconography, clear text legibility, and appropriate resolution in full-screen mode—so you can spend less time adjusting settings, and more time defeating that next big boss.
  • Mostly Compatible: This indicates games that may require minor in-game setting changes for an optimal experience on handheld.
Based on this information, it seems likely that games without one of these badges are not handheld optimized. But that doesn't necessarily mean that they won't run well on the Xbox Ally or Xbox Ally X.
