Film rocks. Tarkin's VFX really was jarring at times. Leia was pretty good.

Overall this film really makes the empire and Darth Vader as a force to deal with. They are fucking scary in this film.

I'd put it TESB > Rogue One > TFA

What was the context of the Leia scene? I didn't expect her in the film at all.
 
CG Peter Cushing was distracting as fuck. Couldn't believe in any of the scenes where Mendelsohn was talking to him.

Also I imagine the people who had issues with all the callbacks to A New Hope in TFA will take issue with all the fan service in this one, especially the last 5 minutes.

I thought they used doubles and used the audio from ANH, sure sounded like direct audio clips.
Though i guess would be easier to take the shot and edit it a bit as necessary.

we're talking Disney here, they pretty much survived on exploiting franchises in remakes/reboots/spinoffs/straight to video sequels for decades on end. only question is when, not if, they will they remake the entire series.
 
I just watched this. Oh wow....this is REALLY good.

Gives a whole new meaning to Episode IV's title - A New Hope.


Btw, isn't this is a spoiler thread? Why are there so many spoiler bars around?

Not sure how you could complain about that since RO happens immediately before ANH.

Tying the ending of RO to the beginning of ANH makes narrative sense.

To this day I really have no fucking clue why people keep saying Disney for Lucasfilm when they don't for ESPN or Pixar or Marvel.

Disney has their own film studio which is a completely separate subsidiary unrelated to Lucasfilm. Just like ESPN.

Walt Disney Studios isn't producing the NBA pre-game shows for ESPN. Just like they didn't make Rogue One.

It does makes narrative sense. I also feel like they didn't have to have it end right at the beginning of New Hope and instead have the ending be about Rogue One. It's like they didn't think that standalone story was strong and engaging enough to satisfy fans so they had to give us Vader with a lightsaber and young Leia.

And in a way they were right, I can't say I felt much sadness when they started to kill every member of Rogue One (except maybe Baze and Donnie Yen).
 
They really, I feel, shoulda irised out as the doors closed on Leia, instead of bringing the camera into the room with her and giving her that line of dialog. That woulda been perfect. And not just because her effect wasn't as good as Tarkin's, which was always distracting.

THAT SAID: the way this movie is put together makes it feel like there was never any other story configuration BUT this one. Which is kinda crazy to me. It's maybe the slickest trick the filmmakers pulled off. Not the resurrection of dead actors, but the ability to make this film feel as cohesive as it does despite everyone knowing that a lot of work got put into it via post-production. It never feels that way though.
 
This movie really makes it seem like RO + ANH is a duology.

I love how
Gold Wing team, Red Leader and Biggs are all in this.
Sure came as a pleasant surprise to me.

I honestly have no idea how to do it any other way. When you make a story where people fight for something and they all die, you gotta show the effects of their struggles afterwards or else it'd be depressing and unsatisfying.
 
Like others have mentioned, this really feels like a duology with ANH. I can see myself watching them together in the future.

It's pretty amazing how natural the story feels in the grand scheme of things. Sure, some areas aren't perfect but I came into this incredibly skeptical and left feeling like this is a solid solid SW film.

I admire how ballsy they were with Tarkin and Leia. And that Vader hallway scene was fantastic. Edwards made Vader and the Death Star genuinely threatening and scary.

Tarkin's voice was a bit off, at first anyway, i think. But the CGI was pretty good, didn't notice any oddities but then i've never been good at reading peoples' faces and i can easily miss errors. Regardless, Tarkin's such a great villain and important to the Death Star it was nice to see him there.

K2-whatever is certainly one of the best droid characters in any Star Wars work.

Seeing Vader's Castle was very nice, though i keep wondering where it was. Could have been Mustafar but could they have brought Bastion back from old EU?

EDIT Oh, and Vader looked too short. Or Krennic's really tall.

Vaders castle is on Mustafar according to the art book.
 
Man I really loved the last hour of the film so much, wasn't expecting such an extended Rebel Land/Space Battle. That ramming ship manoeuvre.
My crowd went absolute wild when Vader destroyed those poor rebels in the hallway.

Looks good though.

And it seems it was on Bast EDIT NOPE Vjun, no Bastion in old EU. Also looked a bit different... but the concept exists, which is the most important thing. Always felt it was kinda interesting Vader had his own private retreat somewhere.
 
Someone please answer me this, does Giacchino drop any ANH references in this film? Like the Death Star motif or the old Vader theme? I'm trying to temper my expectations here.

Sure, there's some familiar music though i think it was used sparingly. A bit of Imperial March was there too.
 
It was basically my one indulgent little wish for the film - that Giacchino would bridge Star Wars musically to this film in exactly that way. A friend told me it didn't happen, so I wasn't expecting it. But sure enough, first time you see the Death Star - he sneaks it in. First time you see Vader - he sneaks it in.

The Imperial March is a lot easier to spot, but he doesn't lean on it at all.

It can be sad without being depressing or unsatisfying.
Also literally everybody in the audience fucking knows that their sacrifice will ultimately lead to the Death Star's destruction. You don't need to show it. We're not that dumb.

Knowing and seeing is not the same thing. Like, if there's a movie about a group of people sacrificing their lives to save a baby, I'd very much like to see a scene of the baby arriving safely on his parents hands after those people all died instead of some outside person just saying "and the baby's name? Albert Einstein".
 
Plus, I've seen at least one major reviewer write as if he wasn't quite sure where this movie really did fit until those last scenes.

Which is... crazy to me, but it probably suggests there's going to be more than a few people who are familiar-ish with Star Wars who don't quite remember any of the details.

As ubiquitous as this series is in pop-culture, a very large percentage of those who enjoy it don't really pay much attention to it once the movie is done playing, or remember too many of the details past leaving the theater.

Except we already know the punchline in the case of Rogue One :)

Whatever, it didn't bother me that much in the grand scheme of things. It did highlight however how unaffected I was left by what should have been a very tragic ending. Movies like Saving Private Ryan managed to make the death of each squad mate hurt in a way this really didn't.

In Rebels season 1, Kanan, a ex-jedi padawan, was capture by Tarkin and almost send him to Mustafar, where "they send capture jedi's and never have seen again". Shit, they made Darth Vader a villan livel Sauron/Mordor right now, when you tink it is problaby the most dark place in all Star Wars galaxy. It is scary to tink about what could hapend there, and give more meaning when Dark Vader tell Luke "it is to late for me now".

Vader's tower looked like it could have come straight out of Mordor during the flyby.
 
Picked up my IMAX ticket for tomorrow evening. Seeing it solo, and I was able to find a single spot on a higher row close to centre.

We already knowing the punchline is moreso a reason why just the punchline is not enough!

I just disagree that the movie showing the aftermath of their struggle is a sign of their inconfidence about the story, because I think it's an integral part of this kind of stories, at least the non-nihilistic-slash-cynical ones. I don't seek the answer to "does the baby survive or not". I seek feel-good visual pay-off for the whole thing.

Media screenings were in 2D and the credits said it was a 3D conversion, so I wouldn't stress about 3D unless you want the big screen.

Speaking of the credits, anyone know what Lord and Miller contributed? They both got a special thanks near the end.
