to be fair I was only familiar of the first trailer

with that said I was mainly focusing on the
beach/water scene
that was stated earlier in the the posts

Saw it in 3D but it added nothing. TFA had several sequences that impressed me in 3D, not a single moment stuck out in R1 that used the tech to good effect.

This movie is gonna be as polarising as ROTJ. I liked it more than ROTJ tho.

I would say new era lucasfilm has done a good job so far.

I honestly feel like TFA has this "I remember this franchise!" nostalgia thought shielding it.

I thought it was the right way to bring the franchise back. The nostalgia didnt bother me so much, because I was invested in the new characters. I feel like Rians episode 8 will make people appreciate TFA more.

That's how Rogue One feels to me. It feeds entirely on your Nostalgia for for the Original Trilogy while all the new elements, mainly the characters, fell completely flat for me. It's a OT fans' dream come true, but to me it relies on Fan service even more than TFA did. This is literally a story we already knew, fleshed out with characters that, to me, felt like complete Filler material. And that's fine, by the way. I don't share the opinion that a reliance on established series tropes, characters and ideas is a bad thing.

very much so. And i don't think anyone can or should expect them to top ANH and ESB ever.
Now - while we can't ask them to stop milking the franchise - they should at least keep it interesting, which is exactly what they're doing with the Anthology films (fingers crossed)

Just like Marvel does with Guardians, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man etc.
Not saing Ant-Man was a masterpiece, but it was noticeably ... different ... to the "Avengers" main-line of films.

But is it, really? We knew "Leia had plans". I think the contributions to the saga made by Rogue one were rather valuable.

I watched TFA like 8 times over the past year and I love it every time. As long as that remains true, I don't care to find out if my opinion is based on rose-tinted glasses or not. I doubt it's that anyway, as I only got into Star Wars' OT real late.

Episode VIII does need to expand the franchise and draw less ideas from the past, but I'm not even worried about it. I'm sure it will.

This is actually the first time this story is told. We knew about the plans, but all of the machinations aren't. It basically expounds and supports ANH.

I think this is a 2 for 2 for Lucasfilm. For this movie I think most people will come out generally like it and I think fans will probably see this more than once.

Maybe in some cases ... Personally the surface familiarity between ANH and TFA is neither here nor there. I love it because it took the old characters forward in meaningful ways, and stitched great new characters between them. Kylo killing Han is an incredible Star Wars moment to build a film around, it was meaningful to me and that's why I still think it's awesome. It has quite a few other merits besides.

Edit, caved and booked to see RO tonight, 3.5 hours to go :D

They don't feel like the same movie to me. Though I get the comparisons.

Yes, Han's demise was very powerful, and I also think that the scene where Kylo is trying to force grab the lightsaber and it suddenly whips past him into Rey's outstretched hand, as Williams' incredible score kicks in, may be a top 5 SW moment for me.

the line delivery wasn't as perfect as it could have been and the lenses in the helmet seemed to be a tad too transluscent? He also seemed to be not as tall or beefy as in the originals/I remembr.

A lot of people kept saying nostalgia was blinding fans to how bad TFA was but I still love it. The characters and action were great.

Pulling out another death star was definitely an "oh come on" moment but not a deal breaker for me.

Curious to see how it's all going to look together a few years from now taken as a whole when IX is done and released.

I liked it a little bit less than TFA, which I really liked. The first half feels a little clunky and the characters work but not to the level of TFA. The action and visuals are outstanding for the most part. The references got a bit much, though.

The first act is a complete mess, characterisation atrociously lacking across the board (Yen and Wen are the standouts).

Last 40 minutes are heavenly, with the final few minutes perfectly executed.

Goes from corporate product we didn't need to pure artistry. Bizarre.

(CG is indeed terrible in the first instance, but rather fantastic in the concluding shots)

Such a weird consensus to have emerged. I'd kill to know what went on behind the scenes with this movie, but Lucasfilm have been nothing if not reticent. Rinzler got booted and his "Making of" for Ep. VII has been shitcanned for no apparent reason. Rogue One bonus features will probably be just as vapid and self-congratulating as TFA.

And yet some guy here is complaining that there wasn't much to link this with the rest of the movies besides A New Hope. I honestly felt the opposite.

There's so much for a fan to enjoy and the whole thing looks like a new adventure into the SW universe. And it's cool.

I don't know if I liked it overall more than TFA, which I loved (recognizing its flaws), but it's definitely up there with my top three.

The overall balance of quality installments vs shitty installments in the franchise is restored back to positive, with 4-3 in favor.

Tony Gilroy played a heavy role in reworking the third act, didn't he? Maybe the differences between the first two halves of the movie are owed to having essentially two different directors?

I thought Gilroy was mainly brought in to shore up the smaller character based scenes. At least that's what EW were reporting when the reshoot news came out. I do remember seeing mention of them struggling with the ending as well though.

Yea, I was bored and crestfallen with the first say...2/3rds. Just could not believe this ended up as the final cut given how forceful the characterization and development turned out. Flat all around.

Finale still had me choking up though. Shame the rest of the film wasn't nearly as engaging.

Saw it today, thought it was ok. I give TFA some shit but I actually like that one more.

I definately expect this one to be quite divisive after the honeymoon period is over. There is a bunch of cool stuff they do unique in the SW movieverse but I just wasn't feeling the ''vibes''.

One lil thing that might be just me since there are other movies/shows I have this problem with but I have REAL hard time remembering the names of the new characters. 12 hours after I saw it and I couldn't tell you the names of the bad guy, the blind guy and his sidekick, the pilot, the rebel guy ect. ect. The only fuckin names that stuck with me were Saw and K2 for some reason. They need to start hammering the names to us stupid people with memory problems I tell ya! I should follow the pre-release info more I suppose.

Oh, and the bad guy is pretty lame. The only neat thing about him is the design. You don't really hate, like or feel sorry for him, he's just kinda there.

The best thing about it was the return of space battles. I just wish they gave them time to breathe more to show the scope rather than constantly cut to other stuff.

Man this was amazing and everything I wanted and didn't know I wanted out of a side story. I'm still fresh out of it so I need time to decompress but I think I like this more than Force Awakens, like a lot more.
