I grew up with the OT aswell, my favorite SW movie is RoTS and I think TFA is one of the more embarrassing cash ins I have ever seen in my life, so much pandering I wanted to walk out the theater, is not about they didnt take any chances, is about how diabolical and evil that people is in making the same movie twice and you know what? the audience fucking ate it all up.

Jeezz.

Is this a bit you're doing? If not, just wow.

You love Star Wars. It's gonna be awesome to jump into the universe on the big screen again.

I'm honestly still shocked that this is going to be a thing every year for the foreseeable future. Like I went my entire childhood watching Star Wars on VHS. That was all I had until Episode I came out when I was in high school. As a Star Wars fan those prequel years were a wild ride, quality aside. Then it went dark again. Sure we had the Clone Wars, and then later Rebels, but that just wasn't the same to me as a big budget live action film. Now we've finally gotten Episode VII, which was better than I could have hoped for after the prequels, and we're getting a new movie every year from here on out. It's just crazy to me.

The movie is really good guys. Chill!
Anyone saying it's straight up bad must have not liked any Star Wars movie...

It has its flaws like TFA, but it's still a dream come true to have SW movies of this quality.

I didn't dig the music at all on the other hand, it was too "noisy" for my taste. I'll listen to the ost tomorrow to give it another chance.

Im still so shook. I need to watch the new SW movies 2 times to even properly process them.

Gonna collapse because I have been awake for like 24h but just wanna say i looooved it. Yeah even the first half lol.

Dunno yet if I liked it more than VII, I first need a good sleep. But this feeling about having 2 really good SW movies in a row is awesome.

I know what you mean. I watched TFA four times on opening day last year and it just wasn't enough. Planning on seeing RO three times in the next 24 hours, but I might bump it up to four if I end up liking it as much as I think I will.

This is honestly ridiculous. The movie was made for everyone not just the hardcore. It's a restart and was supposed to tie old with new.

It's so funny, I didn't know this was coming out so soon. Such a contrast compared to TFA. I knew that movie's release date about 6 month before it came out. Excited to see it.

Nah. Pretty sure you're gonna dig it.

Can we argue about something before you leave again?

Was really disappointed by this :(

Basically the same problem as the director's Godzilla film; solid action filmmaking wasted because I couldn't get invested in the characters at all. There's too many of them and none of them leave a lasting impression, save maybe the droid.

That's not to say it's without merit; the attention to detail for Ep4 era is astonishing, and is reassuring that any other films they do for that time period will feel authentic.

But yeah...just found it dull and unengaging for the most part. Goddammit :(

Doubtful. It's not that it being sluggish is a problem, its the lack of compelling characterization and motivations that are. The way it introduces each member of R1 and foists them together feels hamstrung and as flat as their personalities. You aren't taken to any mysterious worlds or settings to picque your curiosity either(ie. Mos Eisley cantina, Luke and the sunsets, etc..). Just a load of trite dialogue and explosions.

Brilliantly put, agree 100%.

That's a lot in one day. I'm impressed.

I enjoyed TFA a lot more. R1 felt like star wars without the myth, but the myth was not replaced with anything interesting.
I was looking forward to the spin off movies a lot because I hoped we would get small, smart and intruguing stories set in the star wars universe. R1 was not that, it was still trying to be an epic story and didn't feel smart or special, it only lacked the myth.

That's my first impression and I hope I'll feel it a bit more on a rewatch, maybe I was just tired and not in the right mood. I think I'd even place it below ROTS at the moment.

Is called EP7, is a direct sequel, instead of a sequel we got a remake of EP4.

Im not going to make a list of things about it Im just going to link a google search:

https://lmgtfy.com/?q=episode+7+is+a+episode+4+remake?

You can call it ridiculous all you want and defend it all you want, and making a thesis how is not a remake and how it was the only way it could work, etc, the movie was a safe ass pandering to nostalgic fans, Im just calling it how I see it.

And this one even has more of the same homages and padering I read somewhere? are this people capable of making something original?

Sitting in the theater now! So god damned excited! I love this annual star wars movie thing. Pretty much every year its Gonna be my most anticipated movie

Diabolical and evil? Really?

If you saw A New Hope and then saw TFA, and think you saw the same movie twice, I don't know what to say

Been wondering how to word my impressions, but this is really close. Including the part about needing more time to digest. I suppose it comes down to what you go looking for in Star Wars, and this can cover a really wide gamut. There's so much to appreciate in this film, there's double or triple the attention to detail and competence I had been expecting. But as I suspected when these side stories were announced, the heartbeat or myth as you put it is missing for me. Guess I'm a Skywalker saga kind of guy or something.

It's a whole Star Wars movie about nothing that was important enough to dwell on until now. The sad part for me is it's a whole movie about nothing important, that happens to also
feature the greatest space battle since Endor. I have been craving these types of scene in my mainline Star Wars, and have in no way been recently sated. I hope to God 8 and or 9 don't veer away from this as a result of R1's existence.

What exactly makes a story important to tell? What gives a narrative importance?

And even if it's because we already know what happens next, LucasArts/Films thought it important enough to tell that there was a game covering the story previously.

It's like Titanic.

Even if you know the general outcome, it can still be about personalized details and characters and what they go through.

It's not that fucking difficult to grasp.

People call TFA an ANH remake and say R1 feels like TESB but I think R1 caught the look and feel of ANH really well.

Just finished Catalyst, the prequel book to Rogue One. It's clearly written for the purpose of being supportive lore for the new movie as opposed to being a stand-alone story, but I enjoyed it. Seeing these characters in R1 is going to get emotional with all this backstory I know now.

For anyone about to see the new movie and did not have time to read this book, a short summary if you'd like:

The book is about how Orson Krennic manipulated Galen Erso (Jyn's dad) into contributing research on Kyber crystals toward the Death Star's superlaser, while making him believe he was working on energy production for afflicted worlds. Jyn is a child and the Empire is young. The death star project is still a secret to the galaxy, being built by the enslaved Geonosians above their planet. Krennic and Tarkin are both involved with and in a constant power struggle over the Death Star project.

More and more the Empire uses loopholes, technicalities and lies to do unsavory things and a few begin to take notice. Imperial control over certain key worlds is being gained by framing their local governments with planted evidence of separatist weaponry. Worlds being mined for death star material are left lifeless husks in spite of protection laws. The Empire is still maintaining a pretty face for the public at large, but shit is starting to go down in secret.

Krennic starts off appearing to the Erso family as a benefactor but as the years go by he tightens his grasp until he is threatening Galen's wife and trying to turn the family against each other. As Krennic begins hatching plans to possibly murder Mrs Erso for getting too nosy, the Erso family learns the truth and escapes. Saw Guerra, who has already caught on to the Empire's game and has already been assisting its victims, helps them off Coruscant and into hiding. Their loss gives Tarkin the edge over Krennic in the eyes of the Emperor.

I'll be sitting down to watch this in about four hours. :)

Thanks for the Catalyst synopsis. I usually don't read SW books but that sounds like a healthy amount of info. Also cool usage of Geonosians.

Considering I'm not a Christmas person... at all, this is a holiday tradition I can get used to :)

As long as they stay good and please for the love of god don't fuck up that Han Solo movie because ohgodthatideasoundsterriblebutfucktherearesomegreatpeopleattachedtoitandIonlywantthemtobehappyandIwanttobehappysopleaseKathleenKennedypleasedon'tfuckthisupkthxbye....

That's just one opinion. Don't let it sour you. Not saying his opinion is wrong, but just go n with as clear of a mind as possible and you'll probably enjoy yourself.

Unless something is fundamentally broken I try and tell people to not let reviews cloud their mindset. If you're excited to see a movie. Go see it. Listening to others opinions whether good or bad means you'll most likely be looking for those moments that others deem problematic.

I bet you'll come out loving it.

For me VII was ubershit and I have very low expectations for this spinoff, really hope for a surprise but I won't go to watch it until next week.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
I basically always assume I'll have the exact opposite opinion as everyone else on GAF.

I love The Dark Knight Rises.
I enjoy Man of Steel.
I think Iron Man 2, 3, Avengers, Avengers 2, and most every Marvel movie outside of 2 or 3 are pretty bad.
I love the first Captain America.
Zootopia was a snoozefest.

... I thought the Force Awakens was great. An 8/10. But I enjoyed the prequel films, too - but I recognize their faults.

But this thread, man... I just don't know what I'll think.

I mean

It actually doesn't seem to me that you like Star Wars in general
I like StarWars. Loved the first trilogy and liked the second one. But I didn't like VII at all.
I can give you the reasons but at the end movies are art and art is diferent for everyone.

This is lies, because not all of GAF is a collective mind. There are tons of views here on all those movies.

For example
I don't like Dark Knight Rises
I think Man of Steel is great
I at least like most Marvel movies and I adore Captain America First Avenger and consider it one of the best.
I love Zootopia.

Just got back from seeing it and I say this as a die hard SW fan but I think it's one of the best, if not the best SW film there is.

I'm sure it'll have it's detractors but man, it was certainly something special in my eyes. Totally agreeing about the tension aspect too.
