So in honor of the dreadful-looking trailer that ran before Avenger's last night (and dropped with a thud in audience crowd reaction), I thought I'd swing back and watch this archaic old superhero movie from, like, ten year ago.

I'll say first, from memory, that this movie series nailed its hero characters pretty well. And screwed up its bad guys royally. If you don't get Dr. Doom right, you don't get much mileage out of a Fantastic Four franchise it seems. This guy is just dour Lex Luthor wannabe. Such a miss.

Practical effects The Thing? Man such a tough call. He was like The Vision from the movie last night--he looked better up close than he did from a distance. Judging from the FX work on Mr. Fantastic though, I'm glad they went with practical. Michael Chiklis really owns the part.

Movie takes its time with character moments and it keeps it watchable and fun. Chris Evans having the most fun he'll ever have in a part. Jessica Alba always very good and a pleasure to watch. I even liked Robin Atkin Downes as Mr. Fantastic.

This franchise movie run was doomed by its Doom. ...As for the new one?

When all is said and done, it will probably be regarded as equally bad as the one coming out soon.

Yes, I'm calling the next one also being quite bad.

So, we've hit the point where people look at the new F4 and say "No! You screwed it up! The old one was better!"

These F4 movies are literally the worst superhero movies by a significant margin. Evans was the only bright spot in any of them, and even he wore thin pretty fast.

Nobody said that.

It is mathematically impossible to produce anything worse than a tie.

Yeah this movie is awful and I'm so glad that Chris Evans got a second chance at a superhero role after this.

But sure, I'm willing to rewatch it on Netflix or something. Sometimes watching the truly awful things makes the good things seem even better.

The only thing I remember being good from these movies was Chris Evans, and the effects (which probably suck now). I was thinking about doing a rewatch one of these days.

The new one doesn't look bad to me, I think they'll probably pull of the 4 right going off the trailers, but the whole thing hinges on Doom.

These movies are why I laugh whenever anyone says that any of the current Marvel films are bad. It just shows how spoiled we are when it comes to our superhero movies these days. But I, I remember the days of Fantastic Four, and Daredevil and Elektra. I have not yet forgotten Ghost Rider!

Hmm.

Honestly watching this movie the morning after Avengers 2...

I just feel confused. Was this movie secretly good? Is Avengers 2 secretly bad?

They seem real similar.

You have too much faith in the 2015 movie being only "quite bad." I got a feeling that it's gonna go full Zelda Cycle and people will start holding up the 2005 film as a gem in comparison to the 2015 film.

they're both movies, so in a sense they're similar

I guess I officially no longer feel Marvel Studios can do no wrong. Letting it sink in... it was kind of a mess.

That's a pretty good way to put it; they nailed the hero cast but Dr. Doom was such a misstep it ruined the whole franchise.

Thanks Willy I just watched the scene where "the bank pulls out" of Von Doom Enterprises and it was just ridiculous, IIRC he's going to stalker-kill the banker later in a parking garage.

Ooh look at how sneery I am.

Okay yeah so now I remember that the Final Battle in this movie was kind of ridiculous, the crowd scene, everything, rapidly heating and cooling stupidly metal mutant Dr. Doom.

That's why the sequel fared a bit better... less Doom.

I also really don't get anyone's issues with Jessica Alba in the role although admittedly I may just also be in love with her and 100% accepting of wherever I can see more of her.

I was 16 when I saw the film in the theaters, and of course there were a bunch of parents with their little kids. Problem was, there was this total dudebro who looked like he'd come to the theater from his Frat's liquid lunch, and would not shut up about how hot Alba was for more or less the entire film. Like, saying to his friends, "She's so freaking sexy dude." when practically the whole theater could hear him. I wanted to turn to him and say, "Sir, please put your cock away, there are kids here."

It was a weird experience.

The movie had Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis. That's pretty much all I could find. I liked it the first time I watched it back then, but as an adult I consider it one of the worst films I've ever seen in theater. As bad as Origins Wolverine.

Thank the hollywood lord for Chris Evans.

Boy, just when you think you've seen the worst hyperbole on the internet...

I watched the sequel today too and Doom pretty much fucked it up too.

Did all the hair & makeup budget go into The Thing? Bad contacts and terrible wig.

Bad things tend to happen when you try to literally whitewash minority actors and actresses. I can't believe no one involved with the production looked at publicity shots of her and didn't raise some concerns about their casting decision.

This movie sucked out loud.

I remembered another thing about this movie: Ioan Gruffudd's dong is apparently quite abundant and they needed to redo his pants because of it...not sure if it was just a rumour tho

Got this on DVD for christmas when it came out for some reason. Watched it once and thought it was okay, cant remember a thing about it.

The special features though, now those are a trip. Stan Lee over enthusiastically declaring everyone perfect for their part is seared into my memory. "Heres a guy who loved the comics as a kid... and now he's playing his favorite character! How perfect is that?"

The chemistry between Evans and Chiklis was pretty fun and they both really fit the part I think. Really good casting choices and one of the only good things about the movie. I can't fault it for it's tone, it at least tries to run with the whole "family" dynamic and do something light-hearted.

But everything else... nah, we've definitely come a long way ever since. Movies like this make me question how anyone can consider any of the movies in Marvel's current cinematic universe streak as "bad movies" when at worst they're just average or mediocre. Comic book fans have gotten fucking spoiled.

It had some fun moments, but was overall terrible.

I just watched it last night with gf (who wanted to see it for some reason).

How did Sue getting naked and invisible get Reed and Johnny across the bridge? One moment she's invisible, next moment she's getting dressed and they're like hey, you got us through that crowd. How? It makes no sense!

I quite like the movie and have watched quite a few times over the years. Admittedly that was before the full fat Marvel movies arrived.
