I was thinking of buying STALKER. Do you guys think my computer can handle this?

Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition
Intel Core Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT OC'd @ 700/1528/1000
4GB DDR2 RAM
Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer
3 SATA HardDrives

Don't even bother.

It's only a mildly overclocked 8800GT, guys, so you're actually not very accurate with the sarcasm and spooging. STALKER is pretty demanding at high resolutions with the full dynamic model on, not to mention optional ini-enabled features like global lighting and motion blur.

Depends on the resolution he's aiming for.

Sigh...

Cleart Sky just got 88/100 on PCZone, a higher score than the previous game and it sounds awesome! Faction war is now totally dynamic and goes on even if the player does not participate, AI is very improved with stalkers now throwing grenades and even picking up items from the ground!

I might install this game again after I've got all the parts for my new computer, I'd like to see what S.T.A.L.K.E.R. looks like on the highest settings. I've only been able to run it on medium/low with most of the effects turned off on my current comp.

I'm really looking forward to all the PC games which are coming soon so I can test all the new components. :)

Nice. I will definitely buy it. I'm stuck to my laptop for 1/2 year, so I'm not sure if I will buy it at launch though.

As a reference, what did the original get in that magazine? And also, are they good reviewers?

I'm a bit sceptic of this game, since my last return to the first game. Damn, it was harder to go back than I thought.

Alright, all this talk of STALKER has pushed me to go buy it. I never thought my computer was good enough for this game, but it sounds like turning the lighting off will make it possible.

However, I am going to shamefully ask a hardware question of you all since all the PC guru's seem to be gravitating to this thread. I'm trying to squeeze the last little bits out of my current PC before upgrading for Diablo 3, Starcraft 2, etc... I'm currently rocking a 128MB 6600GT on a non-SLI board. For $50 I have the opportunity to upgrade to an SLI Motherboard and a 256MB 6800GT.

Do you guys think I'll see a decent upgrade worth the $50? Ultimately, I'm hoping it will run Left4Dead and WotLK a little better as well.

STALKER looks soo soo good though. Some kind of hybrid between Deus Ex, System Shock, and Fallout.

For 50 bucks it's hard to say no, but keep in mind the 6800 gt is going to be a very short term investment. It will most definitely give you a good performance boost over the 6600 gt, but you might want to look out for cards such as the 8800 gt or HD 4850. The 8800 gt has been going for around $110 or so, and has a possibility of the prices dropping even more as dealers clear out their inventory. The HD 4850 is also a good choice because of it's relatively low price (around $150 after rebates) and performance. Ultimately, the decision is yours and I hope I just gave you some more ideas rather than pushing you towards one thing or another. You might even want to look up some reviews of all three cards and figure out for yourself which path is the best to take.

Thanks for the great advice! I definitely realize the 6800 gt would be a short term investment. However, I was under the impression that dropping an 8800 gt into a AMD 64 3500+ might be a waste of power since the CPU is going to be the major bottleneck.

Getting close to that point where I need almost a complete overhaul of my system, and I'm hold on for dear life!

Using a standard Macbook Pro on Bootcamp, would you say I have a hope in hell of running STALKER at a reasonable framerate?

Also: Played this game at a friend's house. Enjoyed the first thirty minutes, twenty of which were spent raiding that house, then exploring around. Does it get easier to kill people later on though?

not sure about how it'll run.

I just put in about 2 hours tonight and I find it does get easier because you get better at aiming. You also get smarter about hitting F6 all the time after losing major progress a couple times. :lol

I'm playing it on the second high difficulty and indeed you die a lot, so saving is really important (I'm at 40 saves, with a few hours of playing :p ). But maybe that's also because I want to kill everyone (I raided those house, where the STALKER was being kept hostage, on my own and I also killed everyone under the railway bridge with the crappy handgun).

I also use the Oblivion Lost MOD, so your weapons have a bit more of a punch & accurate and I also think you get better weapons faster. Besides this you get also a bit more of a survival experience (you have to eat/sleep etc).

Yeah it gets alot easier later on, you will die if you think you're Rambo but in general you won't have much trouble if you're careful.

Eh, no.

My computer is nearly the exact same specs. I run Stalker at max with everything on max. EVERYTHING. Everey single Float mod, every single .ini mod that makes it look better, 1650x1080 resolution.

60FPS constant. Not ever a single drop besides the general small stop that the engine has every five minutes or so.

Thinking about grabbing this to prepare for the new one, should I play it vanilla or are there mods that dramatically add to the game like in oblivion?

Actually even though the Float mod makes things look better, it also improves performance greatly, you will not get the same numbers without it.

I'd recommend just getting like S.H.A.R.P.E.R Texture Mod, sky4ce and maybe the Endurance Mod so you can carry more. I started out recently with Stalker Weather Overhaul on, and this is what the game was like at night.

http://ikuu.net/images/screens/swo_night.jpg

I'm only just finishing it for the first time, but go with Vanilla + graphics mods, and once you're used to the game then install something like Oblivion Lost, or some other major mod.

Good looking out on these. I might check out that Float mod it really does improve framerate. I'll be playing it on a Notebook:

Pentium 4 3.6Ghz w/HyperThreading
GeForce 7900GTX 512MB
160GB HD @7200RPM
2GB DDR Ram

Am I good to go with this?

I'm finally going to play this game in all its 1920 x 1200 maxed out glory very soon.

I played about 20 hours of it slogging through the various areas on my old laptop and loved this game.

Also have Clear Sky to look forward to. :)

Finished this game today. What a fucking awesome game. Played it with the latest patch and the latest release of the Float32 mod (just visual upgrades) installed.
I had so much fun with this game that I left my copies of Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3 unopened for the last couple of days. Especially the last part of the game (Pripyat and Chernobyl) blew me totally away. I managed to see three endings so far
"I wanna be rich", joining the c-consciousness and destroying the c-consciousness.
.

There's something about the A.I. in this game ... dunno how to explain it, it's just mindboggingly incredible. Seeing these different factions fight each other ... Freedom vs. Duty, Freedom/Duty vs. random bandits/mutants/Monolith and the military vs. everyone ... while you're on a mission and just trying to survive long enough in this hostile environment to find out what happened to you. The atmosphere and tension in this game are just through the roof.

Oh and btw this game is still damn pretty.

God damn it! D:

Just bought the game, for 9 euros from a local store here..

It was still shrinkwrapped and all, but there appears to be no serial in the case. Also, no manual. (On the disk it says: Manual on disc). Seriously, where's my serial!!

The benchmarks do not lie. You simply don't have an idea for framerate variations.

Well, I don't really need one, since the key is for multiplayer only. :lol

I figured this would be the best thread to bump.

So I got Clear Sky installed and took a few screenshots but I don't know where they go. Where exactly can I find my screenshots? I've looked through the installation file and I can't find them.

STALKER was my most difficult, tedious, painful game experience EVER! But when I finally finished it... I loved it.

Then I started Clear Sky. Fuck Clear Sky I'm NEVER going to hit that series again.

Honestly, Clear Sky would have been okay if they had just never implemented enemies throwing grenades. Funny story about my first play through. First time I was at the bandit checkpoint where they rob you blind, for some reason a Clear Sky group was attacking the bandits. This caused them to agro me. The Clear Sky group died pretty quickly (there were only 3 or 4), forcing me to quick save a million times so I could dodge a million grenades (they would literally throw 10 grenades at a time, every 2-3 seconds, it probably took about an hour of quicksaving to progress, which would amount to roughly 18,000 grenades). I only found out this wasn't intended after replaying the game. Other grenade antics: getting one chucked at me roughly 400 m away onto a hill, bouncing in front of my face, while I was trying to snipe bandits from a distance where they wouldn't throw grenades.

Artifact hunting was made super lame too... it's kind of fun, except you can only do it 3-4 times because they're spread so far apart. I'd rather there be piles of them sitting around.

Then they managed to make the ending sequence even stupider/more impossible than the one in the first.

Yeah, Clear Sky left a pretty bitter taste in my mouth. I was expecting to be disappointed, but they disappointed me even more than I expected. I'm guessing the fact that the first was pretty good happened by pure chance, because it's pretty clear GSC Game World has no idea how to make a good game.

When does this game get good? I've started from the beginning 3 times and played about an hour each time. The camera kind of gives me a headache and the combat is pretty bad. I bought this game and Clear Sky in the steam sale. The genuinely creep games thread had a lot of discussion about this game and I really want to get to the good stuff. So when does it start?

From the minute you start the game. If you've played it for an hour and aren't enthralled the game isn't for you. :(
