Samsung Silent On Disastrous Galaxy S6 Sales

I've always felt the Galaxy phones weren't really worth the price. The build quality and materials are noticeably poor but Samsung priced these phones as being high end.

Didn't they just start not using cheapo plastic everywhere?

There are much better Android phones out there.

Don't really agree. Other phones might offer better value, but in terms of spec, the S6 got a lock. Build quality isn't an issue anymore and the Snapdragon snafu pretty much tanked every single alternative for the next half-year.

Mine is different but I haven't put a cover on the Note 4 cause of that grippy back.

The faux-leather back on the S5 is fantastic. I love the grip.

For the past few years, they have increased their flagship phone price to match the iphone. The dropping of Flash support (though not Samsung fault) doesn't help along the way.

This is where the Samsung phone users started to split between budget phone users and flagship expensive phone users. The budget phone users switched to other android manufacturers, while the flagship expensive phone audience switched to iphone or hold onto the S5.

Samsung and its fanbase shone and exaggerated the 'flaws' of iphone, and now its slapping them back in the face.

Samsung trolled competitors with its S5 waterproof ALS ice bucket challenge video.S6 has got no waterproof now

Samsung trolled iphone with the wall hugger ad, touting its removable battery. S6 has got no removable battery now.

Samsung attacked iphone's bendgate. S6 faces a bendgate of its own that's as severe if not worse compared to iphone's bendgate.

^^^ This reply is so beautiful. We all need to bask in the proper perspective that this poster brings to the discussion. The iPhone hate was funny knowing Samsung wanted Apple's margins.

This news is surprising because the S6 is easily the best Samsung smartphone to date. It has the best camera thus far in an Android smartphone. It might be too late to take this approach for Samsung but we'll see. Thus far the early returns are too little too late.

Let me see if I got this right...

1. Samsung projected 70 million S6 sales in 2015.
2. The S6 sold 10 million in one month.
3. There are seven months left in the year.

Disaster?

Its a disaster once you consider these and then think in depth a little bit more.

Not really sure of the projections, but iirc the s5 sold 11 million the first month, leading to sales for the year falling under projections by like 40 %. Which also lead to falling profits over consecutive quarters.

So unless their projections were actually less than their s5 projections, that's probably why they'd be concerned (if true).

You operate under the assumption hardware sales are flat month to month from a launch month. They may level off at some number, but it is not going to be anywhere near 10 million a month. Likely they are closer to 2 million a month.

The funny thing is that the 10m in a month destroys all the other mainstream android makers. LG, Sony, Motorola etc. would kill for sales like that.

Its only poor compared to Apple
Its poor compared to Samsung's own sales prior and their projections.

The amount of denial in this thread is strong.

It's only a matter before one of the Chinese vendors (Xiaomi) overtakes Samsung.

Yeah I think the author of the article screwed up on his math. 10 million / month + 7 more months = 80 million total, so they're exceeding their projections. Actually with the Christmas months it may be even more than that.

That's not how sales of phones work.

This.

I gave up on Samsung after the Instinct. Never again. They should go forward with SD slots and removable batteries. Like someone else pointed out, if someone wants an iPhone they'll buy an iPhone.

I have an S6 and love it, but they went too Apple this year and gave up on the things that made them different from the iPhone.

Also, TouchWiz is still ugly as sin.

To be honest, I'm considering selling the S6 for a G4 for those very reasons.

Actually, it kind of is. Normal people buy phones when their plan allows for it, not always right at release. Sales are spread out more evenly than they are with most other products. Phones don't fit in that category of "90% of all sales in the first two weeks" kind of release.

You do know you can just replace the launcher, right? I had an HTC One for two years, I only used Sense for a few days during that whole time.

Wrong, Samsung will be lucky to see launch month sales again.

went from s2 to oneplus one, no regrets
my next phone probably is the leaked sony one that looks like a single block of metal if it's real

Of course I don't think 90% occur in the first 2 weeks, it's not a movie, but they are not flat month to month from launch, otherwise why are they releasing new phones yearly with usually very low shipments numbers for the 0.75 year old phones in the quarter before launch?

You say TW is ugly yet you're going to get a G4? UWotM8?

That's silly, the Instinct was a proprietary OS feature phone and they have 6 generations of experience making an industry leading smartphone now.

If you're not going to like a Galaxy then don't like it, but don't like a Galaxy because you didn't like the Instinct.

I have a very strong feeling that a company as large as Samsung did some market research on the waterproof and SD card issues, and decided that the number of people who valued those things were not enough to keep them in.

Or maybe they just did it willy nilly...I don't know.

I do know that everyone should get themselves a OnePlus One. Loving this phone - lots of ram, 64gb of storage, and only $350 off contract? Amazing.

I dont think it has much to do with the iPhone 6 but rather the fact that it got more expensive. Also when you look at the past two years you can see the cheap smart phone options have vastly improved.

A lot of people align their contract dates with the predicted launch of phones. There'll be plenty of people ready for a new contract this September when the next iPhone possibly launches.

This is a case of critics not lining up with public opinion.

Most of the glowing reviews centered around the aluminum and glass construction, something hat critics eat up and have been wanting in samsung phones for years.

The truth is though, the generally public doesn't give a shit about that because they'll just put it in a case anyway.

I honestly can't remember the last time I saw a naked iphone or galaxy s5.
This. Glass and aluminium are great until you drop them.

I keep meaning to replace my S3, but I never get around to it.

I think there are two big factors working against Samsung here:

1. The Galaxy series has always had the major advantage of being the spec leader. This is still the case, but the Android market is so mature now that even budget phones are impressive and powerful, so this isn't nearly as advantageous as it used to be.

2. There is a lot of excellent competition in the Android space nowadays.

I run my iPhone completely nekkid. Always have since the iPhone 3G. I have Applecare Plus so if I drop it and shatter the screen I get a new one for $79. And they let me do it twice.

Haven't had to yet but it's still nice to know it's not the end of the world if I drop the phone the wrong way.

I'm looking for a new phone now, I had a galaxy s4 that was advertised as 16Gb. There was about 9Gb usable. After that I said Fuck Samsung, and will never get another Samsung product again, I'm sure there are a few more people like me.

That's what those snail pace SD cards were made for!

Samsung needs to understand that if anyone has the money to buy a new iPhone and had to choose between that and the S6 they'll almost always go for the iPhone. The S6 isn't that much different from the iPhone 6 and Apple will always have the brand advantage.

They are... China
Isn't the iP6 performing better in every territory than the iP5 and 5s?

I've got a 16Gb sd card, but I'm not able to move apps over to it because of the change Google made. And I dropped it and completely broke the screen yesterday. Nothing but black. In my house and only a few foot drop.

Agree. S6 costs for about >$800 in my country, pretty much like Iphone 6. People would buy Iphone just for the premium image of the Apple brand.

Where i'm from, the unlocked RRP for the S6 Edge 32GB is $1349!

I can get the M9 for $1099, Z3 for $999 or the iPhone 6 64GB for $1249. All of which are arguably just as good. There's no reason to spend more on a Samsung phone.

Nokia syndrome?

Too many product lines, too fast and too many parallel working teams which can't react to the feedback of the lastest released phones.

Touchwiz has got to go. I went to Xperia after my S3 and I love this thing. If Galaxy ran stock google I would have bought an S6.

I agree. Fuck touchwiz. Stock android is the best. Samsung needs to stop trying to be Apple.

I actually really like touchwiz on the s6 and this is coming from someone who hated it before. it feels way less bloated now and the multi tasking features are great plus the one handed keyboard mode is amazing. The icons are ugly but you can change that, I also use a Google now launcher.

That's a shame, I'm really liking my S6 Edge. It's going to be hard to compete with Apple at the high end, just like with tablets and laptops. Android is going to eat a race to the bottom of good enough handsets.

I think most people finally realized how unnecessary it is to update a perfectly working phone every year. I still use my S3 and see no point in upgrading any time soon.

I really fucking hated Samsung phones after having the S1, GNEX and S3. Swore I'd never buy another one. Then the S6 edge came and I got one straight way LOL.

It's a really great phone. Looks great, they ditched the touchwiz to a large extent and I don;'t miss stock at all from my Nexus %. And I love stock and I hate touchwiz so that's a big thing.

I don;t really understand all this "oh it's just an iphone" stuff. It doesn't look like an iPhone. It runs Android more importantly. If it ran IOS, I wouldn't want it.

There's so many bloody options now, and the cheaper ones are pretty good. The market can't possibly keep getting people to throw their devices out that fast anymore...

Google should be pleased. Samsung dominance in the Android market is threatening to them.

I bet they are delighted. Their relationship with Samsung is really strained and Tizen was seen as a giant fuck you, even if it doesn't have a chance.

But Google also has to fence the myriad of Chinese forks, so it's not like it's going to have an easy time in that front.

Actually they shouldn't. The rise of emerging market brands like Xiamoi means only bad news for google. A good number of these OEMs ship their phones with a "googless" Android skin (phone come without any google apps installed at all, not even playstore). Google don't see a single cent from these phones, with Samsung at least they see some money.
