Sega "intrigued" by Revolution backwards compatibility

If you were lucky enough to get a chance to meet up with Reggie “The Regginator” Fils-Aime yesterday, then you might have overheard some comments he made regarding the Nintendo Revolution. Apparently, Reggie said “Sega is intrigued by the Nintendo Revolution’s ‘backwards compatibility’” although he didn’t say whether or not they were willing to go all the way and bring classic Sega titles to the console. He also mentioned that the game controller “shell” will look similar to the Gamecube’s Wavebird (IGN weren’t too far off after all).

Nintendo must be extremely excited at the possibility of having not one, but two online catalogues of classic games for the Revolution. The chance to have Sega’s game library as well as a history of Nintendo games available at our fingertips is also pretty exciting for us, frankly! Who could possibly ask for a better launch line-up?
Would be awesome.

I hope that they're also intrigued with the 360's Live Arcade. I'd like to get achievements on Sonics 1 and 2, gosh dernit. :P

Jet-fucking-Set-Radio, Sega....I need to retire my DC.

if even sega gets their catalog online too, there isn't much the fans can bitch about for that kind of money, is there?

The best thing about the virtual console is that it just sells itself. For instance, say you dont' like any of hte launch games... no problem, buy a Revolution and download some older games to tide you over. It really does increase the Revolution launch appeal.

Sega should bring home all of their hit 16-bit and 32-bit arcade games to Revolution that either never came home at all, or came home in watered-down crappified form because of inferior console technology of the time.

If square puts their back catalogue (not likely, given that they can sell those games on GBA or DS) that'd be enough for price of admission right there. Oh and Capcom too... that'd be just awesome.

MMMMM.... Bionic Commando

This would be awesome. Let's hope it's true.

And please, please, please let the standard controller shell have a SNES/PSX/etc button configuration. As much as I like the layout of the GCN buttons, I would like Revolution to have some more fighting game support.

Master System, Genesis and 32X are all likely canidates imo thanks to low ROM sizes and already working emulators on SEGA's part. I can see basically all the games from SEGA's current Gametap library on both Live Arcade and the Virtual Console (Sonic 1-3K, Phantasy Star 1-4, Alex Kidd 1-3, LandStalker, Gunstar Heroes, Wonderboy 1-6, VR Deluxe, VF Deluxe, Chaotix, etc)

am I the only one dissapointed for the wavebird-esque shell? i was hoping for a diamond configuration :(
I NEED to be able to play Street Fighter 4

So Rev will employ a storage medium (ie hard drive) to house these downloadable content, right?

Unfortunately, the Revolution will use expensive flash memory. With all the cost cutting Nintendo is doing with the Revolution in order to price it significantly lower than the competition I don't see why they can't throw in a HDD to store downloaded games. There's no telling how mucn money Nintendo is going to make on flash cards if the virtual console idea takes off.

Edit: I think i answered my own question.

Really, with the falling prices of hard drives- I do not think it would have been an major impact on console price to include one as opposed to flash mem. Without a doubt, modders will trickle one in & sales will fly.

Wavebird-esque doesn't mean it'll look exactly like a Wavebird.

"Put their games catalog in the Revolution with all of your hatred, and the 0wnage of Sega will be complete !!!"

And this coming from someone who loved the Genesis...

Probably wouldnt be powerful enough to emulate the DC so it would need hardware which Nitendo wouldnt do because the rise of cost.

Not to mention the fact that there'd be no space for most DC games.

They could make the actual system backwards compatible with DC discs (a la GC)... but it's probably not worth it really in the long run for either Nintendo or SEGA (no new media sales).

I could care less about the Revolution emulating the Master System, Genesis, or 32X. If it emulates the Saturn then I would get really excited. The reason being I never owned the Saturn-I would love to play some of the classics on that system that never made it over to the states.

Oh man, if Sega opened up its full library to the Revolution download service, I'd freak out. They would probably make a killing off it too, which is probably why they won't do it.

Well, at least this means people can perhaps next year sometime buy old Sega games . . . from back when they could makes games worth a damn. And I say this as being ultra-hyped for Phantasy Star Universe, but their output has been abysmal since the DC.

What if they sell DC games of the Nintendo Site and let you burn it to a CD. Then all you need to do is pop it into your Revolution. Security can be linked to a user tag. Since it is in digital format, each game image can be encrypted with a unique security key that is linked to a player's online tag. If someone tries to copy it, they will need to use the unique online tag for it to work.

It is also possible they built into the Revolution emulator for the Saturn, and DC, and Sega can release their old collection for sales in retails stores at bargain bin prices.

WHOA, that would rock.

yeah, won't happen :(

I thought Nintendo said that it might be possible to expand the Rev's internal storage. Didn't they say you'd be able to download GC games? I'm sure that if there's demand for more storage they'd release and upgrade (HD maybe?). Then space-hogging games won't be a problem.

This news is INSANE IN THE MEMBRANE.

At first, ALL I thought about was the Genesis. But holy crap, SEGA made the Saturn and Dreamcast too. Would it be really possible to emulate those? Hmm...probably with alot of work. It might throw a wrench into Nintendo's marketing plan. How would you market this?

"Nintendo's past comes alive! (along with Sega)."

"Nintendo and SEGA together!" but this isn't about SEGA. This whole backwards compat is Nintendo's last lifeline. I don't know if they'd share the spotlight.

hopefully they spice some of the games up.

i´d love to see how Space Harrier would work out if it supported the free-hand controller with the anolog stick.

in any case, stuff im looking forward to the most is the classic AM2 stuff.

Sweet, that free Snail maze game that was built into the Master System will rock with the RevCon!!!!!11111111

"PLAY ALL YOUR FAVORITE CLASSICS" with the sub 'all your favorite games by Nintendo and Sega on [Revolution]'

Revolution should be designed to include Saturn, Neogeo, PC Engine and other CDROM based games compatibility. Ancient but cheap hardware technology. Superior game catalog to have the competitive advantage. A cheap, large, diverse portfolio. The true way to appeal to the real mainstream.

I really want this to happen just because I'm so damn lazy. But if there was a way to get Saturn games... DAMN! PDS for the FUCKING WIN.

Probably wont have Saturn games though. :\

Bah. Put them on XBLA, Sega. :(

No one would buy them on XBLA, BC is going to be THE selling point of the Revolution-so there will be a market for Sega's titles. They would just be ignored on XBLA.

Didn't want to create another thread. Here's some Revolution game announcement news.

http://revolution.ign.com/articles/677/677700p1.html

Revolution is included in the list, making AQ one of the first 3rd parties to commit support for Nintendo's new platform. The company is working on an original action title and a game based off a major comic license. Additional details were not provided at the press conference.

To be on topic, I want R-Type, Contra, (Sega)Nights, Shinobi, Virtual ON.

Pretty sure it will. It did fit rather easily on CD's for the pirates.

And really, I just want JSR on a different console. It doesn't have to be on the Nintendo VC. I just want a accurate port as a budget title on any current/next gen system ('cept xbox for fear of not being compatible with the 360) available.

Yeah, expand it with SD cards.

And no, they didn't say anything about downlading GC games. What would be the point of that when you can still find most games in stores fairly easily?

Indeed. Nothing appeals to the real mainstream like Saturn, Neogeo, and PC Engine games.

The classic shell would almost have to have the diamond layout. Think about it, most SNES games used the Y and B buttons. Example, make Mario run with the Y button and jump/pick items up with the B button in Super Mario World. Now look at the GCN button layout and realize how much of a pain in the ass that would be on that controller.
