I love how I can die 100 times against a boss, the suddenly I won’t take a hit and barely heal and wipe the floor with the boss who was giving me a pain in the ass for an hour.

I’ve really found one attack upgrade has helped a lot. I forget what it’s called but it’s a big overhead slice (it’s meant to come back up again but I can’t figure out how to do it). It does SO much work.

this really helped me with miss butterfly who was nothing when I went back to her. Maybe now is a good time to ask:

are there any essential upgrades? I got the makato counter which was absolutely essential, but is there something else I’m missing?

The upgrade to make more damage to enemy posture with hits and skills (like the Mikiri Counter) and the upgrades to your own posture. I also remember there was one to get health back after any death. Those are mandatory.

I have had Sekiro just sitting on my shelf for six Months , I really need to pick it up and give it a go at some point. However i really need to be in the mood to play a FromSoftware game because if am not i just rage quit. thats the reason it took me so many attempts to get into Bloodborne

Is it weird if I find Sekiro easier than any Souls game? (especially DS2). Not easy at all, it just feels more doable. I feel like the tighter combat focus, no leveling and always losing half your skill allows for more confidence on the part of the player. I'm not worried about souls, I'm not worried that I may be underleveled. The only things that bother me is maybe missing opportunities by doing things in a different order than intended (will I see you again Kotaro? I'd like more upgrade materials. What's the deal with the kite? How do I get to the fresh fruit? I see the hole dammit) and enemies that require quick items to beat.

i took a long break from this because of that seven spears guy. i was just super pissed off after beating him.

came back and now i've progressed quite a bit. i'm trying to fight the Guardian Ape. I've killed the giant serpent and got to Ashina Depths. i just can't kill this ugly chimp.

nah it is easier. the game holds your hand way more and for goodness sake even gives you 2 or 3 chances at a fight. in soulsborne you die...you die. no coming back. there are lots of other things that make it easier. the prosthetic is cool but it lets you get out of a tight situation too often. in soulsborne if you ran into a group of enemies then you had to deal with them. in sekiro you can just GTFO.

still...that doesn't mean it's easy. i've struggled and currently am struggling. it does a lot of things right and a lot of things wrong. same with soulsborne. i was watching videos of Souls and it just looks so slow + clunky (i loved playing them) and i can't believe i struggled with it. Bloodborne is kinda similar but that's much more fast paced and I think that would still be a challenge. I don't think I could go back to Souls 1 + 2 but i think Souls 3 + Bloodborne I can see myself going back to after Sekiro.

i agree about the side quests. they are so confusing. i have no idea how people figure this stuff out without a guide. yeah the game does give you hints but seriously how are you meant to know WTF you are doing. i'm just YOLO'ing it and not caring what i end up with at the end game.

Love how the final fight and the first fight are both kinda the same! When you beat the game then find Genichiro in that field, you are super sharp and ready for that fight. Even tho u must lose for story reasons it’s fun to try a rematch and it’s so cool to have that fight bookending the game.

Sekiro is once again more accommodating to the player than in Souls in this regard. No side quests will really give u rare items and the 4 endings are all easy to do. I was able to 100% this whereas I’ve never plat a Souls game, the online covenant grinding was just too much, the missable NPC relocations just too much to keep track of for me. Sekiro felt a little more focused I was able to deal w it all.

Is it possible to not spoiler me and advise whether I should ring the Bell (the one it says not to ring)?

Okay Sekibros, I need some motivation.

I finally got basically everything done in the game before heading to the final encounter. I have full health/posture upgrades, all spirit emblem upgrades, every skill tree completed except for the monk tree and the style combination tree. I'm as done as I can be without ludicrous grinding or going on to NG+.

Double monkeys wasn't so bad.
Demon of Hatred was easier than I expected......

I started giving the last boss a go. I thought I was making decent enough progress; I had two tries where I got the 3rd phase down to an inch of health but died because I got caught on fucking rocks. Then after that I went through a dozen tries dying to the first phase up until rage quiting 10 minutes ago.

I know it's a bit of a faux pas to complain about the last boss of this game, but damn is it discouraging. I thought I had the fight down but now I'm just eating shit on phase one and I'm sure phase 4 will be even more ridiculous.

Any tips?

I say take little break clear you mind then comeback to it with calm mind. The last boss in Sekiro is the ultimate test of everything you learned so far even to point of him using most of the weapons you encountered through out the game. You can do this!

I'm not sure how far in I am, but something that has helped me for boss fights is listening to a comedy podcast after getting the gist of the fight first.

Yeah I'm probably going to try again tomorrow and spend half the day on it. I have so many other "tough" games under my belt that I'm bound to beat it eventually. I haven't raged this much in a while though 😅

Maybe I'll listen to Sleepycabin during every loading screen or something.

Alright I beat it today. Took a break last night and watched Kill Bill vol.1. Ignored the rumbling in my stomach at lunch today and beat the last phase with every single health item I had on me used up.

Tbh I found it a bit underwhelming that the best strategy I found for the last boss was hit and run tactics. Nevertheless did a victory lap by beating Genny in the prologue on NG+. Got the Return Ending first now I'm going to go for the Shura Ending.

Ooooh Yeah! Issin in Shura is harder than Sword saint, you basically have less room to run away and some of his attack has fire damage on his second phase you better try to dodge them instead of try to parry it.

For me best tactics against him was being super aggressive with him and not try parry every spear attacks, I pick and choose the one I parry and the one I dodge. If you try parry every his spear attacks it will destroy your posture very quickly.

one Sword Saint tactic i love is that when he is holding his sword and it sparks and he's about to do that one-two slice, start running left as soon as you see the spark. if you're running left he will always miss you and you can just run up while he's still slicing and get in some hits.

Yeah, some of his attack you can easily get behind him get some good hits.

Goddang this game still challenging me. I’ve got 100% on PC and beat the game 5 or 6 times can one shot Guardians Ape yet Emma is still kicking my ass from time to time LOL. No matter how good your skills if u start slacking for just a moment these bosses will punish your hesitation so hard.

“Perhaps I should’ve killed you sooner...” damn, Emma 🔥🔥🔥

Also really digging the shared fighting style between Genichiro, Isshin, and Emma, they all share moves, maybe w little variations, but they have a strongly shared combat style, and its such a cool touch, it almost makes the whole game into training for that final battle.

I just picked this up in the steam sale and am loving it. I’m a huge Tenchu fan and I can’t help but compare it.

great game but I’m not sure about the RB for attack.

I personally enjoyed that fight, I especially the animation of that ape, the second fight with the ape is really gonna piss you when a second ape joins the fight. :lollipop_beaming_smiling:

That was actually not a problem. The boss became a lot less aggressive at that point. It was actually a pretty easy fight, already knew how to deal with the stupid ape.

Managed to get back to the castle, things are looking very interesting now. Can't wait to explore, but I keep getting my ass handed to me by random mobs.

The ape is difficult. I usually get to the second form with all spirit emblems used up. Then the second form moves weird and causes terror. Ugh.

I was so proud of myself for beating Genichiro on the first try. That was a fun fight. Great design and animations.

His second form is very easy compare to first, you can parry most his attacks now and even stun him and you can easy get away from him when his starts screaming.

Ok, I was being hesitant on getting too close due to the wavy movements, but I wanted to try this. Thanks for the confirmation.

Once the Ape clicked with me, the entire game clicked. Ape is not that hard. It's predictable once You learn it's moves

That’s basically most bosses in Sekiro, once you learn the flow with each boss you can beat them. I would even go as far as say once you learn Guardian Ape’s attack pattern, he becomes much easier than Darkbeast Paarl in Bloodborne.

I picked this up again after almost a year.

Made a bunch of progress including the 2 stage Genichiro one on top the castle. Which was rough. But now I am stuck on the damn giant Ape!

Took me like many attempts to beat him. Only to discover he also has a second form!

I can reliably kick his ass in the first form now. But the headless version is kicking my ass.

I agree... maybe except for last boss since his attack patterns are too fast for me to notice. First form not problem but then holy shit he is so difficult

I felt that on my first encounter with him but my other playthroughs I got used to his attack patterns. I actually find bosses with delay on their attack harder to parry than faster ones, like the headless boss with sword, they are slow but the way they move is hard to judge the parry window.

I only just got started on this game, but I like how the parry has its own button as compared to the P* standard of moving the analog stick toward the opponent + button (which is cool but more challenging to pull off imo).

Owl absolutely destroys my posture and I can only see maybe one attack that gives a clear opening to attack, but only if I'm close enough, and if I am, I lose the ability to heal. I can do a bit more damage with the mist feather dodge, but that still only gets me halfway into his first health bar.

So I think I have every boss except for the last down. I keep avoiding playing and finding any excuse not to finish the game. Also it's fucking hard!

Well I had a LTTP thread going but I'm moving here. This my first From Software game actually and I'm having a lot of fun with it. My first playthrough I messed up and forsake the Divine Heir so I got the Shura Ending first, which I later learned made my new game plus run harder since I missed out on some attack power upgrades. It has been harder but have been making progress and now just got further than I had on my first run. Feeling some accomplishment.

Yes. I finished yesterday actually. Great last boss, but I should never have taken a break! Made it really hard to get back into it.
In my opinion of the best final boss in gaming, a great final boss is about ultimate test of everything you have learned through out the game.
