Ugh this thread. 7 pages of "how could they change her precious origin?" Really gaf? Fucking who cares?
Anyway - I was looking semi-forward to this show, She-Hulk is a great Marvel character and absolutely deserving of some spotlight. They had a few really strong superheroes in 80s comics and she stood out as being powerful, smart, and fun, so it sounded like it would be a good blueprint for a show in the current Marvel pantheon. Of course I am no dummy so tempered my expectations, for a bunch of reasons.
Well here it is and 3 issues, I mean, episodes in and it's - well it's its own thing, that's for sure. I don't hate it, I DEFINITELY do not love it, and I will stick with it for a little while (hopefully it will get better, it has to?) I think the issues I have with the show are more issues I have with the current state of the MCU (the constant references to outer space travel, Skrulls, Asgard, bleah bleah). If they could like just tone ALL of that noisy shit down and concentrate on building a more immediate world and life around the main character and her posse then it might be more accessible, for me anyway. Probably one of the reasons that I actually really like Moon Knight, they barely mentioned any connections to the larger universe and just let the immediate players do their thing, and it wasn't perfect but definitely much better than this, hell even Falcon and Winter Soldier did a good job of the same. Anyway I get away from my point.
The Abomination/Wong/etc stuff feels like it could be interesting but just feels weird and kinda useless, but ok I get it they are trying to play up "she's a lawyer.. for super hero issues" angle. Ok. That character I haven't cared about ever, but if they get the two tussling at some point all will be forgiven. I guess you could say that I am just jonesing for SOME actiony stuff to happen. We get a glimpse of the Wrecking Crew at the end of the latest episode, and they clearly have some powered weapons but just run away? Even if she should be able to wipe the floor with them, we don't really see anything happen at all. Again, hopefully a set-up for some actual action to come at some point soon, but we are eeking close to the midpoint of the show and it's still a bunch of (literally) dancing around with not-funny jokes, for the most part, so..
Yeah, I guess my main issue is that it sucks they neutered the Hulk, and now they even have neutered the She-Hulk. Because this is not a full-on feature film but rather a D+ show and they are likely blowing their entire budget just trying to have their main character be decent-looking CGI for all the shots she is in, which are abundant. I get it. It's just a damn tease, because what we COULD have (big bombastic film with lots of climbing up the sides of buildings and tossing cars and punching holes in things) is clearly not in the cards, and they don't really give much hint otherwise (even if not fighting, just joke shots of her accidentally destroying gym equipment, or carrying entire file cabinets, or.. something.. hulky). Now to be fair, I had low to no expectations of Loki or even Moon Knight and both of those shows did interesting things with their budgets, I guess I could think of a few other examples of the other D+ shows as well. It makes this feel a very in-between, throwaway show (so far). We'll see. If episode 4 is more of exactly the same with not much going on besides "oh haha, her name is SHE Hulk, sick burn" then I guess that I won't have much else to expect at that point. I guess we will see. Enough other people don't seem to be having much of a problem with any of this, so maybe it's just me.
