I don't know that I want it to go back to turn based, necessarily. FF has always been about reinventing itself and trying new things and I respect that. By that same token, I haven't really loved or even liked an FF game since XII. Everything after that has felt like Square floundering in some way, and I no longer trust that they know what they're doing with the series. Whether they go back to turn-based or stick with full-on action, or even do something else totally out of left field, I just want them to do it with confidence, and I want them to put gameplay ahead of raw technical spectacle.

FFVI released in 1994, FFXII released in 2006. Good for 12 years.

FFXIII released in 2009, FFXVI released in 2023. Bad for 14 years.

Are you calling FF1-5 bad? :X 1-3 are whatever, but 4-5 are some of the best FF games.

To be honest , they used to made good FF spin off for NDS , PSP ( FF 4 heroes of light , FF tactic, Dissidia FF ....) but now they also stop making many FF Spin off so if you hate the mainline , u basically has no spin off to fill the void

Turn-based is obviously a better system for JRPGs and the success of games like Persona/Metaphor, Clair Obscur, and BG3 shows that there's a huge audience for it. Square should buy copies of Clair Obscur for every member of the FF team and switch back to turn-based with a mature story for FFXVII.

For sure not, Press X to Win is a very boring, with ultra-low skill ceiling and prone to overlevelling/overgearing. Even easy-mode action rpgs like FF15 are more challenging. Story, character develoipment blablabla but gameplay is just weak in turn-based and Metaphor is the latest example.
There is a reason why best of turn-based jRPG sold like 1/3 of what considered to be "weak" FF.

How are they not AAA? Yakuza is up there quality and value wise, same as dragon quest. Maybe your definition of AAA is bit blinded by overbudgeteted western slop.
Last mainline dq came out in late 2017 with enchanced ed in 2019. DQ12 was announced few years back

I posted earlier that Nintendo figured this out decades ago and reading the comments I don't really understand the difficulty. I personally prefer Metroid in first person. Would be more than happy if going forward they all were. However, millions still prefer the traditional 2D Metroidvania design. So Nintendo does both. Mario literally has a dozen versions. You get collectarthons like Odyssey. 2D entries like Wonder, the kind of in-between games like Galaxy and 3D World. They do this for every franchise. There is absolutely nothing stopping Square making 17 turn based and 18 action based, or having even a separate smaller budget Final Fantasy series running separately that's turn based.

I rather think that instead of going hard into "let's do turn-based combat" or "let's do action-combat", they should just let a dude design the combat who knows what he's doing. The problem with FF16 wasn't the combat, it was that there was not much else to it. And the problem of FF15 was that it ended up being an unfinished clusterfuck of ideas because they pivoted a non-mainline game to a mainline one without knowing what they were doing. The problem with the FF7R games isn't the combat (although I am not the biggest fan of it, tbh), it's that they want to break established stuff just to break it, without really knowing what they actually want; the remake parts feel directionless to me in terms of gameplay systems and story.
And I also think that FF does not need an open world. Having an overworld and then bespoke areas/zones is more than OK. It also gives you the opportunity to have a more tailored level design/layout for each zone/area, and make it more fun/interesting.

Yakuza is in no way, shape or form AAA. I'm saying that as someone who loves the series.

We haven't had a big budget DQ in 8 years. There was the Monster catching one, which I own. It was hardly AAA.

That said, FFXVI's story wasn't bad at all. It was actually easy to follow for the first time in decades and quite entertaining, albeit very simple.

Easy to follow, true, if one doesn't really care about all the kingdoms politics and stuff, but not that simple though.
The way the lore is seamlessly integrated in the narrative, with every aspect of everyone's life, dependant on the ether manipulation and how it all affects the users and beyond, is clever, poignant and though provoking. The main cast is absolutely spectacular in both writing and acting.
Not to mention the mind blowing cinematography and production values.
Absolutely top tier.

I agree. Nice to see someone with a positive take on FFXVI's story and story-telling.

I was so blown away by the game, it felt super jarring to see all the hate the game gets online after I finished it.

I just don't see why Square Enix can't have it both ways if the sales justify it. The whole "turn-based or not" debate feels pointless when they can just go with whatever style makes sense to their artistic direction and bottom line at the time.

Edit: I mean isn't that what they have been doing all along? They've had some turn based games that did well but revenue declined so they dumped them. For example Brave Exvius & Mobius both did extremely well. They just needed to cut the cord sooner.
