Shuhei Yoshida: Sony's not sure why PS4 is selling so well

People wanted to play FIFA, CoD, BF, AC, and Madden on a new machine. It didn't matter what machine it was as long as it was the cheapest. Microsoft screwed themselves by making a $500 box that blocked used games. It's pretty simple.

What is with all the "they didn't screw up" or "they got lucky" summations?

If you ask me, it is an entire gen of bashing PS3 in North America led to people actually SEEING that "hey, that other console ain't so bad after all" and them adjusting their current gen purchases accordingly.

I won't pretend I know for certain the ACTUAL reasoning but I am quite certain it is not a result of them not screwing up or getting lucky. At least, those are some of the most minor factors in the current adoption rate.

i think most PC gamers wanting to play TLOU waded in wearing wellies and a gas mask and got out as soon as the dirty business was done.

they certainly weren't getting buzzed on immersing themselves in the raw power of a £100 GPU and a couple of netbooks duct taped together.

lolsauce.

I bought a PS4. I'll probably play most of what I'm interested in this year on it (Shadow of Mordor, Alien Isolation, Far Cry 4). At least for now, most of these titles have visual parity between PC and PS4 until you hit the very upper end of PC specs, and my current rig (i7 4790k, R7 260) doesn't really cut it.

Consoles aren't even close to perfect, but they do the job, especially right now. I won't be playing Destiny on my PC in three weeks.

1st / 2nd Party question:

What Sony 1st and 2nd party games do we know of? After those are listed, which companies have unannounced games?

It's no difficult, come on, it's a lazy system, for lazy people, and has one of the most low-standards fan bases.... of course is every single dude-bro dream (down to "I'm no playing alone, see, I can SHAAAAAAAAARE!" stuff).

Oh boy again. There are some gems in here.

I'd like to know why you thought this post made sense.

I'm not sure either. Possibly because microsoft doesn't provide much competition. There are still western countries where you can't even buy an xbox one.

I really think TLOU has a lot to do with it. I know that borrowing a friend's PS3, and playing TLOU sold me on what Sony's studios could do. Throw in better multiplats, and the decision is easy.

Throw a long-ass seventh generation on top of that, and it's a no brainer.

PS4 is the right console with the right games and developers at the right time. They just nailed it.

Oh yeah, the Xbox and Nintendo fan base is so highbrow :rolls eyes:

It's because we just came from the longest console generation of all time and gamers wanted something new to play with so they ran out and bought the new console that was cheaper and had better running multiplats and no PR disasters attached to it.

Noup, it is true. The IPC in those AMD apu's is garbage, it is practicaly decade old performance.

It's the most powerful console ever made in a small form factor with decent power consumption, all at a great price. It's the definition of great tech.

Go home man. youre drunk.

I for one am a bit nervous because we do not completely understand what's happening.
Come closer, Shu.

Sony didn't win, Nintendo and Microsoft lost.

They tried to innovate, took the risk and failed, while Sony played it safe.

Now you know.

My sarcasm meter is broken. Is this a joke post or was that a genuine post?

Because Yusuf Mehdi and Don Mattrick were/are bad at their jobs.

The hardware should of always targeted 1080p 60fps natively, it's kind of a joke that developers have to make sacrifices to get one or the other.

Sony did so many things right and the competition did so many things wrong that is honestly is hard to say what the reason for the success is. If we lump all of the possible reasons together, yeah it's obviously some combination of them, but I think they're wondering which reason was the primary cause. It would be really helpful for them so they could make sure to keep doing whatever it was.

It's like saying MS screwed up so many things with the Xbone that it's hard to know which mistake is the one that really put them behind. Except this is positive.

1.) Yeah, first of all, he knows why. He can't exactly SAY, "Man, Microsoft really screwed up. Lucky for us."

2.) iPhones still kick the shit out of PS4 in terms of sales. If they're still doing unprecedented numbers two years from now, THEN you can spout all this console gaming isn't being replaced stuff.

Phone sales have always and will forever be more than dedicated system sales thou, just on account of them being a modern day necessity. Sure phone games are being played more than they used to but kids before didn't stop playing Metroid just because they could play Snake on the their phone. And they are not going to skip on Call of Duty to play temple run either.

that's one lopsided build. you could've spent that PS4 money on a videocard, which would have left you single screamer of a machine which would blister through all those games at a happy 60fps. instead you've decided to wallow in compromised mediocrity.

$2-300 would've done it. you could've spend the change on a nice meal and a t-shirt which says "i make the choices which are right for me".

i hope destiny is worth it.

Innovate meaning having a barren release schedule, poor pricing, weak hardware or imposing DRM......yeah I can see why those systems are not selling nearly as well as the PS4 now.

None of that was innovation.

Why, did he read some of your post history like I did, too?

Pretty much this. I fully expect the next gen system are getting a modest to significant boost due to the people who are always early adopters being ready to buy something new after such a long gen.

It's not that there's anything /wrong/ with that, and said early adopters are not irrational or anything. These aren't boosted sales for "no good reason".

However, it could mean sales might level off relatively quickly once the initial rush is over. I'm curious to see just how many people are interested in dedicated game consoles in the current market.

They had that and they had "PT". PT may not be the most engrossing game on the market. It's hard, it's repetitive beyond belief, but it's different. It tries to make you feel scared (and it does), but most importantly it's new. It was free and it's a new experience for Silent Hill fans like myself. I think they had more to show off by doing something like that regardless of how it played. A YouTuber can sum up the excitement people got from it. They're throwing these little things at you as well. Entwined was pretty good, but most importantly it's keeping me playing. I don't really get excited for CoD multiplayer, so things like that are more interesting. If they make another playable teaser, than I'm there.

Xbox may do some things right, but they're teasing their console with the same darn experience I got last gen. The games will be amazing, but the stuff with Kinect and etc. I don't want to sound like I'm bashing MS (I buy their products as well).

LOL, thanks for coming out!

It's going full-circle, that's what. There would be half the competition we have today if it wasn't for the launch PS3 debacle, this is just returning the favor.

They made a more powerful console than their competitor, and offered it as a cheaper pricepoint, while taking a pro consumer stance which stood in stark contrast to their competitor.

Combine that with the fact that people were absolutely starving for the next console generation, and It's really not that hard to understand imo

It's the most powerful console ever made in a small form factor with decent power consumption, all at a great price. It's the definition of great tech.

Won't argue about that, if you segment the statement that way... yeah it is great tech. Kinda sad the bar is that low in the console world thou.

I don't know, it seems like a valid concern. Something along the lines of "what if we are exhausting the pool of potential buyers already?"

Really? Exhausting the pool of potential buyers after they've sold "just" 10m PS4s? If so, their PS console is in HUGE decline.

I'm not sure why Yoshida doesn't know why it's selling well. People have been dying to buy a new console after 7-8 years of PS3/360. Sony also made all the right steps since announcing the PS4, while MS has been marketing their new console as a DRM box. The PS4 had good words of mouth, a good price and some nice next-gen graphics. MS was the bad guy in town. It also launched with very popular shooters (COD/BF). The cross gen game sales also proofed people wanted to switch to new consoles instead of playing on the old ones.
