SIE increasing the Price of the PS5 console in Japan from September 2nd 2024

Thinks buying more servers can fix a bad patch
Totally make sense and a very smart move. People here were saying how PS5 is extremely successful and console gaming is cheap, so why not increase the price for more money? People ain’t going to stop buying a PS5.

It’s all for shareholders. That’s the root of the problem in gaming now. Most gaming companies used to be privately funded institutions and now they are being bought out by publically traded companies who look for continuous growth. They chase trends, micro transactions, and pay attention to woke / political trends.

The minority of people complain on social media endlessly making it seem like the majority care when the reality is the masses just play the games.
Pining for the good old days is just a waste of time. Private dev studios just can't afford the costs of modern game development any more. They just don't have the funds to pay people for 4 or 5 years while developing a game in hopes that the game sells enough copies for them to recoup their costs. The reason you see so many games with MTX is that it takes more than selling copies of a game to keep cash flowing to continue to make more games.

Shareholders are not the problem. It usually takes money from investors with expectations, whether it's shareholders or corporations or other private funding sources, to fund a game. Those investors expect to get some sort of return. Without them many of the games you play would never be funded. If you want to keep getting new games larger than indies then you just have to accept that corporate funding is required to make it happen.

Well that’s part of the issue clearly and I understand your position but what I think we need is more episodic games meaning game that are 10-12 hours long for a lot of these new IP single player games at 29.99 each so smaller developers can take more risks and get games out faster. If the games sell well than they can continue them with another episode. At 20.00 like dlc. Each episode would be a complete experience so if a game failed players had an ending. That’s just an idea but one that we should explore

I live in Japan and yeah the USD and Euro became so expensive, that Sony probably didn’t had another choice. However it’s crazy to think how much the Pro version will cost then.

Don’t get me wrong, I won’t buy a Pro, but if it continues like this, I am worried for the PS6.

But this is kind of BS. Sony doesn’t manufacture PS5s in US. Most components are manufactured in Japan, China or other Asian countries like Malaysia and then assembled in China or Japan.

¥ is recovering to an extent and will do so even more in the near future as US Fed and European Central bank cut rates.

This is just an attempt to get even more ¥ from the Japanese domestic market which will crater sales. I really don’t get the move since that means less sold PS+ subs, less ¥ on software sales and so on.

Edit: And remember also Chinese economy has been going down and manufacturing prices have been falling there. They also deal more with deflation than inflation. So again, price increase is very suspect.

Interestingly, I just saw a post on a Japanese subreddit that in part blamed Xbox for a lack of competition in Japan, saying that they would never do this in the US while Xbox exists 🤔

Switch 2 will have like 99% of Japanese games so even more people will buy Switches.
