For those who haven't seen it in the magazine already, my Game Informer review is now online right here.

I swear reviewers were to busy playing skyrim. They rushed trough Zelda.

two big games almost at the same time was not a good idea nintendo.

I doubt very many (any?) publications had the same critic reviewing both of these games.

Is it fair to criticize a game from sticking to a formula too tightly? That's what Giant Bomb and 1Up suggest. But from all accounts, Skyward Swords breaks the Zelda "formula" moreso than any other game in the series besides Zelda 2.

At some point, you need to stick to a certain script that people expect of you.

Oh fuck it, we're just gonna shit on reviews in this thread anyhow.

Reviewers are complaining in each review about the discrepance between the fresh newly introduced ideas and the legacy of the gameplay mechanics of former titles ?

What.

I do understand what they are thinking in terms of "slow start" but so was FF VIII and it didn't get hammered with 8s...

From the G4 review:
In addition, there seem to be some inconsistencies as to when MotionPlus controls are implemented. At many points throughout the game, you thrust forward to insert your sword into a lock, twist the controller, and then…press A to push the lock inward.

Aaaaaaw. Metroid Prime 3 handled this just fine, what gives Nintendo?

Wait, why would anyone get mad at a review score for a game that they haven't even fucking played yet? How do you know it's so great, unless you have an early copy.

Which is why they are bullshit, it scored lower because it varied from the original formula.

Some of these comments in these reviews are utterly idiotic. They're knocking it because it didnt include some personal fantasy they had, or it doesn't have enough 'customization' as if the game is a fucking rpg. Amazing. Even more amazing is the correlation of the score, with how shittily the review is written. ie. the reviews that sound written by a 12 yr old are in the 80s, while the reviews that actually make fucking sense and written by someone who is coherent and speaks english are in the 95-100 range.

I'm not criticising the scores in this thread as opinions are opinions.

I don't like though is out of 5 or out of 10 scoring for any game.
I mean the difference between 4 and 5 out of 5 is massive.

Giantbomb: 4/5

"Skyward Sword is simultaneously a very good Zelda game and a rather great adventure game. It has some of the most inventive dungeons the series has ever known, sports the most impactful changes to the combat since Z-targeting, introduces wrinkles to the Zelda mythology that will force fans to rethink the entire series, and will have you gawking at it constantly, 480p 'n all. But the series finds itself facing an identity crisis, as it flirts with expanding what has defined the series without abandoning its charming but waning simplicity. Zelda doesn’t need to become something else to maintain relevance, but at a certain point, when “a brand-new great Zelda game” isn’t enough, there’s reason to pause."
Is it just me being slow or is this horrible writing? I've read those two sentences multiple times and still can't understand what the hell he/she is trying to say. Anyway, the review is very positive. But the conclusion is a mess.

wait... fuck the scores...

There is no quest log for sidequests, even though the game tries so hard to add rpg elements?

That should be worth a few points off o_O.

IGN 10/10!!!!!

10 Presentation
The origin story, characters and cinematic sensibility here are superb.

10 Graphics
Nintendo's creative visual style here is not only the best on Wii but truly timeless and stunning.

9.0 Sound
The soundtrack doesn't quite measure up to the franchise's best, though that's a very high standard. No voice acting, though not necessary, does hurt the cinematic feel.

10 Gameplay
You'll never want to go back to traditional controls for a Zelda game.

10 Lasting Appeal
There are tons of side quests that will keep you busy. Plus there's incentive to play through the entire 40-hour adventure again.

IGN: 10/10

I don't put much stock in review scores, but generally the highest confidence measure I've found of a game's greatness is when IGN gives it a perfect 10. Obviously this leaves out tons of good games that I would consider 10s, but the false positive rate is basically 0. If IGN gives a game a perfect 10, it's basically a masterpiece.

Nice to not see much "THEY DIDN'T GIVE THE GAME THAT I HAVEN'T PLAYED YET THE SCORE I WAS WISHFULLY EXPECTING SO I'M MAD AND THEY'RE RETARDED" yet.

Gaf is growing up?
