Skyward Sword review thread [Newest Reviews - Cubed3 10/10, GC: A, AusGamers: 7/10]

I said the same yesterday: a bunch of Zelda nerds were waiting for review scores by people who aren't Zelda nerds. I'm not saying that the reviews are false but that the majority of the people who visit opposed this thread will pay attention to completely other things than the reviewers and will come thus to another conclusion. Whether or not it's a better or worse conclusion remains to be seen.

Personally, the scores fall in line with what I expected (sadly though), it's to see that a completely motion-controlled game will have a rather hard time.

I hope everyone is actually reading the reviews. Even those who were disappointed in part are still saying it's an "incredible" game. Just sounds like there are tedious fetch quests and the like that naturally hurt the overall result. But that doesn't mean that this won't still be an excellent experience.

It sucks to hear that Nintendo still thinks these tedious, drawn-out fetch quests are necessary. Cut the game's length in half for all I care if it means we don't have to put up with them.

EGM's review doesn't really seem to jive with the rest, so I feel comfortable completely disregarding it.
Yeah, I'm just going through EGM's review now since that one seems to be hitting a nerve... That one is a little strange (they have lots of problems with Zelda's demeanour in this game, likening it to Samus Aran in Metroid: Other M; visual design emphasizes enemy strengths and weaknesses and thus SS relies too much on motion controls; TP's motion controls were better in that they were more forgiving, etc). I kind of wish the review were a little longer so that they could justify themselves more (which is the same issue I had with their Sonic Generations review).

I haven't gone through Patrick's review yet.

For whatever it's worth, that "con" list isn't saying you'll hate him because he's a bad villain, but you'll hate him like you hate villains.
Well I'm not reading any of these reviews too closely because I don't want to spoil myself.

But the series finds itself facing an identity crisis, as it flirts with expanding what has defined the series without abandoning its charming but waning simplicity. Zelda doesn’t need to become something else to maintain relevance, but at a certain point, when “a brand-new great Zelda game” isn’t enough, there’s reason to pause.

After reading the reviews, Klepek's ending is still the most weirdly worded.

He mentioned Call of Duty earlier, so I can assume this statement means "Zelda wants to innovate, but is held back by legacy and stupid stubborn fans". But CoD is pretty liberal about messing around with the arrangement of bars to fill each game...

Last sentence.... I guess he's saying that maybe next time, Zelda will feel 'tired', but not this time?

Well, just finished tea. Now to go back and read about all the ten out of teOH MY GOD

Eh, please point them out so I can mark them. I thought I caught them all. Or should I preface something with a bigger warning?
I'd do a bigger warning. You tell people
what the three areas are, that there are time mechanics, that you reenter the Skyview Temple
, and some other stuff. I'd go a general marking near the top.

I'm fairly certain I'll like Ghirahim, simply because he's sort of a breath of fresh air. Ganon was getting pretty tired. Still, I was hoping he'd have a more sinister side.

Hyperbole at its finest.
Large, empty world?
Boring fetch quest?
The worst, easiest, dungeons in the series? Two of which require you to carry someone around the whole time?

The combat was actually decent though.

I seriously loved the Spirit Realms. Short, intense, and for some reason, there's a sound effect near the beginning of each that is one of my favorite sound effects of all time. It's so awesome.

I'm with you. Understand the reasoning behind the complaints, but I genuinely enjoyed the Silent Realm segments.

A lot of European outlets giving the game top scores while the American publications are going either way. What does that say, Europeans are easily impressed or have better taste?

I am genuinely sad that SS doesn't seem to be a return to the glory days of the franchise. Of course I'll have to play it myself to confirm it, but I can't remember a console Zeldabeing so divisive.

AniHawk is right. So is EatChildren.

No game in the series has changed up the gameplay and formula of Zelda as much as Skyward Sword. Some will hate some changes and love others. It's also a motion-controlled based game in one of the most beloved franchises of all time. The fact that the controls are getting universal praise is somewhat baffling.

It's disappointing that there are some issues in the actual game direction. But hey, we got one of the most radical departures in the series yet. I'm okay with the fact that not everything stuck on its landing.

All right guys, I'm sorry for the shit I've said and I'm aware that I'm overreacting. I appreciate the fact that reviewers exist but obviously this won't change anything (I'm still buying it and so will millions of other people). Though most likely, by the end of the day, I'm not gonna agree with some of the reviewers, especially the EGM review. It's blatantly dumb as heck, but whatever.

Sorry. I'm bailing out of here now, thanks for the ride :)!

In horrible attempts to extend longevity? Agreed.

At least TP had meat to its bones. Well, most of the time - and even those dull moments in TP are at least made up for by the outstanding dungeon design.

WW's dungeons...calling them mediocre would be too kind.

nice post TSA. I feel like I will agree a lot with you after my playthrough.

Zelda cycle complete.

Twilight princess is now good. Wind waker is a god tier classic.
Dont worry guys Skyward Sword will be getting the praise it deserves once Zelda WiiU comes out. :P

Amazing impressions TSA...better than any review I've read so far.

And you definitely hit on a lot of things that I was worried about (Tears, backtracking, etc.)

Well, I can now say "I can wait for this game."

Never change.

I like how people [rightfully] ridiculed the Uncharted 3 fanboys for their reaction to the reviews of that game, and yet here we are, doing the EXACT SAME THING.

Hey hey hey, you're not the one suppose to freak out here. It's us.

... And it's actually not that bad. Not Uncharted 3 level, dare I say.

Divisive? Has there been a single reviewer who's said that it's anything less than a "great" game?

There do seem to be a handful of legitimate complaints. Seems like we can expect some lulls and some disappointments. But it still sounds like an amazing game.

Giantbomb: 4/5

"Skyward Sword is simultaneously a very good Zelda game and a rather great adventure game. It has some of the most inventive dungeons the series has ever known, sports the most impactful changes to the combat since Z-targeting, introduces wrinkles to the Zelda mythology that will force fans to rethink the entire series, and will have you gawking at it constantly, 480p 'n all. But the series finds itself facing an identity crisis, as it flirts with expanding what has defined the series without abandoning its charming but waning simplicity. Zelda doesn’t need to become something else to maintain relevance, but at a certain point, when “a brand-new great Zelda game” isn’t enough, there’s reason to pause."
Can anyone explain to me what that last sentence means?

The only reason I am pissed off right now is because reviewers got to play this game and I haven't touched it yet.
I will rage on for another 9 days.

Adam Sessler gives this apology a four....out of Five.

Will take your advice and edit accordingly.

I think the only review that I felt was reviewing the Wii and not the game was Gamepro's.

Otherwise, eh. Dudes likes different things. If this game had come out in 2006, I daresay it probably would be considered differently. There's two sides to the coin of people wanting a game to "save" a storied series and sometimes it lands on "OH MY GOD IT HAPPENED" and other times it is "TOO LITTLE, TOO LATE."

Try this, GAF. Take all the scores out of these reviews in your head. Do you think the things they talk about will affect you, positively or negatively, when you play the game?

This has got to be the lowest rated console Zelda I've seen...ever

And yet I still want to play it, what is wrong with me?

Why would you not want to play it based on some reviews that say it's not the greatest game of all time?

Only Rockstar games get that luxury nowadays.
