Skyward Sword review thread [Newest Reviews - Cubed3 10/10, GC: A, AusGamers: 7/10]

Yes, because 1UP is run by one guy who reviews all the games, and you can measure games against each other by the grades alone, and not the context of what those games are.

Zelda fanboys, man...

To be fair, its a mistake pretty much every type of fanatic makes concerning review scores for the things they love.

Personally, some of the tidbits of information I have read has me concerned, but Im reserving any kind of judgement. As has been said in reviews and amongst the forum, each and every Zelda game has the potential to be someone's favourite, and to be hated by others. The games encompass so many different elements that, if it weren't for the incredibly iconic characters, music and themes, they could barely hold together as a cohesive franchise.

Every Zelda game that I have played has ranked amongst the best on the system in question, and perhaps among the best I have ever played out of all games in general. Yes, even the DS games. I fully expect Skyward Sword to live up to my expectations, despite a few missteps here and there.

Midna was fucking weird. Possibly the most interesting, likeable and well-developed character in the series, in a game where pretty much no-one else had any personality.

I'd say that's one of the most notable changes to the narrative in SS, both Zelda, and even the mute link have more personality than they've ever had in the series.

...to be fair, isn't that the *point* of grading?

(And, lest you think I'm an advocate of it: "And therefore an indication why grading of this nature in reviews is a Really Bad Idea")

The fat bar lady winked a few times, is that personality

Lots of 10's, and lots of 8's. Seems like it'll be quite divisive.

I know, wtf, I'M SO WEIRDED OUT. This is weird. More like Skyweird sword, amirite

But seriously, this is the most bizarre bunch of reviews I've seen in ages. So many (respectable) 10s, so many (understandable) 8s.

She also blew kisses at Link and had deep cleavage and my pants felt real funny and I don't know why.

As I, Ani and others have said, this is a new Zelda with integral, heavy use of motion controls, released in 2011 on dated hardware, with numerous significant changes and overhauls of the usual formula. It was from the very beginning destined to receive mixed reviews, with mixed criticisms, some loving the changes, others not so much, and clashes of disagreeable.

Thankfully nobody here, nor anybody writing any of these reviews, fan or otherwise, is a be-all-end-all authority on what Zelda is all about, and what makes Zelda great. They're just opinions. Opinions I haven't read, and won't read until I've finished the game myself. I actually look forward to seeing what Feep and others think, and reading their critical work, but given I'm already interested in the game, want to play the game, and have committed to a purchase, reviews serve me literally no purpose at this point in time.

Unless, like, I was really obsessive about the Metacritic score or something. But I'm not five, so nuts to that.

The impossibility of comparing review marks for different individual games is a fair one, but that is a very long list, comprising probably all the reviewers and every game type, which would constitute some kind of meta-information on 1up's reviewing policy.

Well if you've seen the tv commercials and trailers it really looks like this Zelda is much more cinematic and looks awesome.

From what i've seen Link is such a badass in SS.

tbh i don't see anything wrong here.
Sorry, I should clarify. I'm not sad that Zelda is more cinematic. I'm sad that the industry's standards for "significant strides in how they present stories to audiences" is "cinematics that play out like a movie."

I don't care about reviews at all, I'll play the game and decide it is a 10/10 for myself, unless the reviewer gives it a 10/10, in which case they are right!

Does this link to that flash game were Midna rapes Link?

Too scared to click.
No, its the insane fan forum with that one guy who has written like thousands of pages of poetry and fan fiction about how he's in love with her and makes arts and crafts projects featuring Midna

At the end of the day, you can throw all the fantastic dungeons. But its a 480p game without voice acting and void some of the little things people are now used to on the HD twins. That was always going to haunt Zelda: SS with some reviewers. Especially in 2012.. (basically).

I don't know, after reading several of the extremely glowing reviews, I much prefer the 8/10 reviews. They're an interesting read, at least.

Edge is the obvious exception.

Wow, Zelda's father would be the perfect target for Amnesty International.

Edit: "Yo b, if you win this shit you gon spend some private time with Zelda word."

Don't have a Wii and haven't played much Zelda but this game has my interests. Seems like the reviews are either "you like it" or "you really like it" with 8's to 10's. Sounds like even the lower reviews say it's an amazing game though.

Maybe I'll have to find a Wii on Black Friday...

The more time I spend on the internet, the more I am realizing that atheism/religiousness and assigning numerical scores to media experiences are not something that people grow out of after all.

No meltdowns, no trolling, no nothing. What is NeoGAF coming to!

Been curious about this and this is to anyone that wants to tackle it. Do people actually view Zelda fans as having a history of flipping out? Or just something people expected given how things have gone down in recently with other games?

I know there was the 8.8 situation but it's been so long that I don't recall just how bad it really was or if it was really as bad some might suggest.. Even then is that enough to build up the expectation?

Review scores seem okay. Not reading any reviews as I don't want to be spoiled. The GameSpot Now Playing gave me enough to see how things are played without being to spoilerly. Stopped halfway through. Though will say personally any "Not HD" or "Motion controls are bad" are automatic ignores for me. Seen to much of that crap over the years.

So exactly like that one Sonic forum....

8.8 is a contender for the lowest point the gaming community has ever collectively sunk.

You have NO idea, considering 8.8 may be the biggest meltdown in video games since the crash of 1983

People thought only kids play Wii games.

Not a joke.

Have you read some of the 8/10, 4/5 or B reviews? They're clearly not very fond of the game.

? I read all of them. Meaning the gamepro, G4, 1UP and Giantbomb reviews. They clearly all liked the game.

I'm sorry, this isn't even a LOLGN moment, its just that statements like this make me sad:

Between this and Uncharted 3, IGN's reviews are flat out embarrassing.

My biggest problem with the EGM score is that the score doesn't reflect the text. If the controls were as horrible as they are described then that should make the game nigh unplayable, seeing how much of it rides on the MotionPlus capabilities.

EGM's review reads like a 6/10, not an 8.5/10. I guess they didn't want to irk the fanbase too much?

At that stage in the game he hasn't got the Mastersword yet. That is totally inaccurate. 0/10.

If you finish the game you can play with this outfit through the whole game.

They know the controls aren't horrible.
