I think what TSA is saying sounds absolutely reasonable, so sorry for some other comments I made.

I usually disagree with a lot of what TSA says about Zelda and what he feels about them after I play them. I appreciate that he wrote up that huge post for us to have some more impressions, but I feel like I'm personally going to find fault with a lot of what he said (pros and cons).

Wait, I'm not reading the reviews, but I've seen it mentioned that the game is linear compared to other Zeldas? How linear? Like Fable linear?

Hard to say, but I think Zelda fans were already tempered by Twilight Princess' review scores and pretty much all Wii fans already realized that reviewers were going to pan this game off the bat for being SD and having motion controls.
Uncharted fans pretty much expected U3 to blow away even the second game and were shocked when it actually did not. Then the 6/10 and 4/10 sent them into a frenzy.
Much different situation.

Yeah, the disparity between expectations and the actual reality of what happened is a very notable point. Lots of people predicted what the scores were going to be before they happened (apart from a higher UK score).

And besides, I think a lot of gaffers - Zelda fans in particular, whose subjective quality game-by-game has always varied far beyond critical acclaim - have realized that they don't need a Metacritic score to validate their future purchases.

People forget that that was also the era where manuals told you how to do half the game and Nintendo Power was as much about selling to confused kids as it was ones hoping to get a peek at this mysterious "Mario Two"

Sorta true although Zelda's manual only showed you how to get the first and second dungeons. I think the game came with a map but it didn't really have that much information.

Surprisingly, not that big. You would think the meltdown would be epic with so many 8's accross the board. I mean, remember the good old days, when people went bashit insane because of a respectable 8.8?

Are Zelda fans finally growing up?

Oh, we simply *expected* there to be some luddites who are incapable of appreciating the future of gaming, so we're calmly taking note of them to send the hitmen around later. We must preserve the purity of gaming criticism by eliminating those who are clearly too addle-brained to understand the very heart and soul of gaming.

(Insane enough for you?)

The Zelda manual helped you find the first two dungeons, that's it. And it's pretty cynical to think that Miyamoto ever had Nintendo Power cross his mind while designing the game.

So, word is, there are
7 dungeons? The first 2 are short, as TSA said. That leaves 5 regular size dungeons?

Also, it can be beaten in 25hours? Was that rushing or no?

What the fuck is this shit? 8s, really?

Not really. I knew that SS would be controversial in the same way Other M was. It was going to be scored low (lol) by some reviewers but praised by others. It's definitely a game that some gamers can appreciate more than others.

In the end though, I'm just happy that after waiting for nearly five years, I'll be able to play another fully fledged Zelda adventure in a month and a half. It will be a glorious moment.

Sub HD, and motion control; do you need more reasons not to play the game?

I haven't followed this game in a long time, but it can still look really beautiful. The screens I've seen look great. Didn't Super Mario Galaxy look amazing? To this day, I still think Windwaker looks awesome on my TV. Nintendo's got a way of overcoming the graphical weaknesses in their consoles with superb art styles.

Anyway, regardless, I'm wary of diving into this game since I've been wholly disinterested in motion controls since a little bit after the original SMG was released.

It's by Nintendo.
It's not a FPS.
It's not a new IP.
It wasn't featured in the latest episode of the Bonus Round.

My suggestion for OT tag was:

Legend of Zelda:Skyward Sword - Or how I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Waggle.

After playing the demo, I am still by my suggestion. I may also want to add 480P as well though...

Dunno, IGN is nice but when EDGE or Eurogamer loves a game they write the best reviews ever.
EG reviwer is a senior reviewer, he also reviewed the following recently:
SMG 2 10/10
Portal 2 10/10
Darks Souls 9/10

If it sells poorly, that's just asking for 'Waggle' to be changed to 'Bomba'.

Erm, they gave it 9/10 didn't they?

Edit: Dont worry, I see you edited :)

Do you think a mainline console Zelda, getting several 10s by major publications, released on console with 90m installed based, is going to bomb?

sorry, fixed it. Just wanted to point out that he does major game reviews, he has also done H:Reach, LA Noire, and games like vvvvvvvv, from the dust, etc

Yeah, this is not going to happen.

Edit: nice OP title update

only played for like half an hour. waiting for my wife to come home, she doesn't wanna miss anything :P

now listening to the 25th anniversary cd. so good :O

I've yet to play the actual game, but TSA's response to Ghirahim seems to back up my feelings about the character.

He seems like a completely weak villain, and I never understood the jerking off for the character.

I once said that it may sell 10m, but one of the requirements that I set, was that it turns out so good that it manages to gather a lot of GOTY award;

What I really meant by that, was to say that if Nintendo manages to win core gamers to play accept a sub HD game and motion control as not something which automatically dequalifies the game from being hardcore, it'll manage to attract a new demographic.

However, although the game is getting very good scores, but those that you didn't expect to give it good scores from the beginning, dudebro reviewers that have always complained about sub HD and motion control of Wii, don't seem to be giving even this one good score. Like EGM review, GB, GamePro, etc.

Instead, Skyward Sword joins motion control innovation and subtle restructuring together to make this the most effortless, breathless, free-flowing Zelda game since 1991's A Link to the Past on Super Nintendo. It doesn't just sustain this pace, but builds it, over the course of a quest that could easily take you over 50 hours to complete.

Lovely. Just lovely.

Some of these reviews are pretentious as fuck. Reading the Giant Bomb one it seems more like an opinion piece on the evolution of Zelda than an actual review.
