Skyward Sword review thread [Newest Reviews - Cubed3 10/10, GC: A, AusGamers: 7/10]

Even in Ocarina you could speed up MOST narratives. If memory serves, the scrolling text reveal would stop and instantly reveal the whole frame of text if you mashed something a couple times.

Yeah, that's pretty much how it is in TP, although sometimes there's animations in between that have to play out for a second.

Speaking of TP, I beat the Forest temple, took a little longer then I thought, but it was a pretty decent opener. Probably would've been better without 3 hours of tedium just to get to it. I know I got ANOTHER Tears of Light thing to do, but I'll save that for tomorrow, I think

Alright, back home for the night.

Alternated off and on with buddy.

We got about 4 hours in, took our time.

One thing is...the game starts sllllloooooooooooooowwwwww. It will suck to replay just like TP does. The graphics are great, the music is great in the bigger areas, but in the dungeons and the ground areas it's very forgettable.

So much talking. My God...just let me do my thing. I don't want to be interrupted by your slow moving text so much.
Maybe this game is good overall, but if the bolded is true, there are certain things that Nintendo does not seem to understand!

Slow-moving, handholding, tutorial introductions are a barrier to both hardcore and casual gamers alike!

If I made Zelda, the introduction would be either an epic "storming the castle" sequence (if we're keeping it linear).... or the game the just drops you into an open field, ready to explore, a la Zelda 1.

Thank you for this interesting tidbit of information. What's your point?

Edit: Sorry should've clarified this was the E3 2006 demo.

No point hence the happy face. Yea those demo tv's kicked ass, reminded me of 2001 when i played the gamecube at e3 on the Panasonics.

I'm watching Invisible Walls right now. They just started talking about zelda but based on the first thing shane said I'm assuming the GT review will be under a 9. He said the game just feels old and dated.

There's been conflicting reviews for that part. Some say Skyward Sword is fresh, some say it's still more of the same.

I must be the only person in the world who didn't mind TP's slow start. Granted it was five years ago, but I like games (well, mostly RPGs and Zelda games) which start out slow and have an 'introduction' phase.

So according to G4s score, Skyward Sword is 20% worse than Epic Mickey, and on par with such masterpieces as the Resident Evil Rail Shooters, another couple dozen half-assed wii ports, and small-time wii games barely worthy of being $0.99 DLC content. I mean, you know you need to abolish your numbering system when it's this fucked.

Also, I like how the major negative in the con column is 'the occasional bit of recycled content.' We're talking about a 40+hr game here. Is this REALLY a reasonable complaint worth mentioning, with a game of this size? I've seen 5-10 hr games with plenty of recycled concepts throughout, which is completely normal. But a 40+hr game needs to be fucking original every single minute and can't have the same concept twice? Amazing.

And for some reason, most of the european reviews are the ones saying that it is fresh, while the U.S reviews are the "harsh" ones. Makes me wonder if they played different versions...

Finally, FINALLY, this thread starts to deliver! Keep it coming, please.

Well I hope reviewers on either side, low or high, provided good explanations because there are going to be a lot of dedicated fans and gaming veterans who will play this game and then go over these reviews. That is what I intend to do.

I loathe them.

I was raised on games like:
- Zelda: LttP (started by infiltrating a castle and saving a princess)
- Final Fantasy VI (started by invading a town while brainwashed by the badguys)
- Final Fantasy VII (carry out a goddamn TERRORIST ATTACK on a power plant)

And in later years we saw the 5 hour tutorial take hold, and it's been a bad idea every single time. If your game's slow, non-action opening is any longer than Chrono Trigger's Millenial Fair, you have failed.

I can appreciate slower moments in the game's pacing... but you have to hook me first! I hate playing games on a promise that it gets interesting later.

Tutorials are because people in this day and age don't read manuals anymore.

Are they bad in itself???

Nope.

Should there be options to skip them or speed them up???

Sure.

This game needs some explanation though as it's the most advanced combat system yet in the series.

Slow starts don't really bother the first time I play it, but it's such a terrible hamper on any later playthroughs that I might have. For instance, I love Mass Effect dearly, but I'd rather scoop my eyeballs out with a fork than go through the Citadel section again.

I don't know about the Europeans but there seems to be a strong bias from American gaming press in favor of certain types of games. I can't say if that had any effect on the SS reviews though.

So GT's complain is that they are not buying the "changes".

Like:

Nintendo: Hey, we changed this and that in Zelda!
GT: No you didn't.
Nintendo: The overworld is now almost a dungeon.
GT: No it's not.

And there's the usual: It's still the same thing, bad Zelda! OMG MW3 IS AMAZING AND IT HASN'T CHANGED IN 5 YEARS!

EDIT: Wow, I actually think GT will give it less than a 8, hearing them talk about it.

But then you have this:

Now that reviews are live for Skyrim and Zelda you'll understand why they are up for GOTY at VGAs. More news next week!

What happened?

I would feel less hateful towards "tutorial sections" if they were couched in action narrative terms.

Instead of teaching me how to play the game by making me run around, doing tasks for villagers.... you should teach me how to play while I first confront the villain or central conflict of the story!

Don't agree with this myself. I think it did a great job getting the player into things ASAP. Of course there is a narrative to get rolling, but I don't see how it could be compared to TP, or even WW in terms of taking a bit to get going.

Actually I loved the beginning to TP. I didn't mind the tear collecting either.

Dear God, GT is tearing Skyward Sword an new one.

"IT'S NOT HD." There it is, too!

Sites or reviewers should be disqualified from talking about the game if they say this.

The reason it's not HD is that THE SYSTEM CAN'T DISPLAY THAT RESOLUTION.

Save that unoriginal stupidity for a review of the system.

I can't believe GT is the one to make those complains, of all people.

They complain about the Zelda Puzzle Solved jingle, what the hell. How can you complain about that?

"I want normal controls."
"It's not HD, it looks dated, downright ugly, but sometimes stunning."
"It's the Zelda game I enjoyed the least of all the Zelda games I have ever played."

Sheeesh. It's getting less than 8.

Funny, I don't see that bitching from reviewers with any other Wii games. Except Zelda, which magically they were expecting to be in frikking HD even though they knew it wouldn't be, as it's an absolute technical impossibility of the system. They knew this 5 years ago. The stupidity blows my mind. These people review games for a living? That, and the 'I'm too fucking lazy and want the combat to play like every previous Zelda, namely mashing a button, even though it's a massive improvement. But, you know, I want to be able to do it lying upside down and shit.' Pathetic.

They knock an actual innovation that is implemented extremely well, then knock points off because the game isn't displayed in an impossible-to-display resolution that not a single person interested in the game was expecting. Brilliant. Nice to know these reviews know their priorities when it comes to games and gameplay.

I never take Gametrailer's scores seriously, but I intently listen to their criticisms and video reviews (usually don't watch if I don't want to get spoiled, I just listen).

But the things they said about SS as mentioned above are just unfair in some sense.

I am fine with criticism of the game but I will totally ignore anyone that says the graphics are bad(fine to note that it looks better in some places than others) or that it controls poorly(it doesn't seem flawless but it seems better than good in that respect from all sane non-agenda accounts).

High class trolling from Gametrailers.

still getting above a 9 there

They've been crapping on it for 10 minutes, there's no way it's getting more than 8, otherwise they are really bullshit.

You're not a troll member! Stop that.

If you're not trolling, where exactly are you seeing this?

Edit: Oh, Invisible Walls. Never watched it.

Well shane did say he was only up to the second area. This was filmed earlier in the week so things could've changed for him.

Yeah, they're phonies if they give it an 8 or better.

If you are going to shit on something this severely, no need to flush the toilet.

I don't know what that means.
