Skyward Sword review thread [Newest Reviews - Cubed3 10/10, GC: A, AusGamers: 7/10]

What's reviews aren't in Metacritic yet?
I mean the finished reviews, not the ones we are still waiting, like GameSpot and others.

I wish G4 would assign me to a review of a big game that wasn't actually very good. So far, I've done inFAMOUS 2, Arkham City, and Skyward Sword.

I would have unabashedly destroyed Battlefield 3 or Modern Warfare 3. I would have given Final Fantasy XIII a 2/5. That would have been fun.
Haha, wow. I can only hope for your sake that you're being satirical. Otherwise, you just perfectly proved that neither gamers nor reviewers can take much of a moral high ground when it comes to scores :)

How much spoilers in the GT review?

I'm not being satirical.

Scores are stupid, but gamers want them. I don't believe in the "8-10" review scale, so I'm gonna use the whole thing. It just so happens that the games I've reviewed thus far I've thought were quite exceptional.

lol... a pretty stupid thing of Shurs to say, considering not all video reviews contains spoilers. At least not in the degree as Gametrailers.

So Ign has this article up called Zelda: Skyward Sword - The Great Graphics Debate
Can Skyward Sword look different than Uncharted 3 and still have good graphics? Duh.

I guess IGN really loved Zelda so much they had to tell people fuck you if you aren't playing it for the lack of HD.

ign said:
By shutting yourself off from non-HD experiences, you're not only discounting the old gems that make up gaming's rich history, but also denying yourself the pleasure of experiencing certain modern masterpieces, like Skyward Sword. And no gaming sin is more deadly than unjustly ignoring a kickass game because of some trivial quibble.

In fact, the quickest way to sound like a total noob is to insist that only HD graphics can look good. Don't let that happen to you.

here is the thing, most gamers that are 360/PS3-only and refuse to go back to SD aren't that irrational and would have made an exception with Zelda.

Had nintendo done a holidays' Wii Zelda bundle with everything that is needed to experience the game, I think a huge load of the current HD gamers would have bought it.

But there's just Wii fit bundles and Wii Sports bundles and such... not very enticing.

It is the 16th full-mark (40/40) review from Famitsu.

3 of them are Zelda games (N64 OoT, GC Windwaker, Wii Skyward Sword)

Edit: beaten :(

Its amazing how my dislike for the Wii is so strong that i dont really care if i miss this one. Used to like Zelda a lot when it was leading the way.

The "you're a MORON if you let the lack of HD affect you" brigade are just as bad as the "HD ONLY, BITCHES!" brigade. The truth is somewhere in the middle.

Another perfect score?

Wow. Some of the scores revealed on Friday killed the buzz a little bit but since then impressions have only seemed to improve.

Why is your dislike so strong, though? The Wii is a flawed console but it's had its share of very fun single player and multiplayer experiences. I can understand not caring for a particular gaming system, but having a strong dislike for one is just odd, in my opinion. Did the Wii hurt you on a personal level or something?

Yeah, it seems most of the "lower" reviews came out straight away, while the glowing reviews continue to come.

I'm relieved Skyward Sword is as good as Nintendogs.
Completely different games in completely different genres for completely different audiences. Nintendogs is top tier quality for the casual pet game genre. It getting high scores (even a 40/40) isn't really that far fetched, and not all 40/40 games are comparable on the same level anyway.

You dislike a console that much?

I just fucking play games that are fun man.

It doesn't matter if Nintendogs is good or bad (for what it is, it's decent enough I guess), the point is Famitsu's scores mean nothing. MW3 got a 39, I doubt many of you are going to go around preaching the validity of that opinion.

Yeah lets compare scores for games in genres that are completely different and target a different audience... I know it's Famitsu but Nintendogs is a top tier casual game.

Well i never had an interest in the motion controls, and the fact that ninty didnt push the technology meant the system just came off as a gimped gamecube to me.

My comment was really just expressing my genuine disinterest, which i think is a problem Nintendo still has with a large portion of the mainstream gamers out there. If Wii was competing on a level with 360 and ps3 the sales for this Zelda would probably be millions more. None of my friends are even interested in this at work neither.

NPD will be interesting.

I'm less intrigued with Famitsu's score on its own, and more intrigued by the mere fact that it has joined the large influx of perfect scores. It's less about their score in particular and more about the high opinion of the collective.

Famitsu has one of the best review styles in gaming. Their overall scores being a collection of four reviewers allow readers to find the reviewer that they most commonly agree with. At the same time, this keeps them from handing out perfect scores like there's no tomorrow. I wish every gaming publication adopted this style of review scores.

EGM used to have this.

Why are we defending Famitsu, c'mon guys
Personally I think it's perfectly valid to think this is the prefect refinement of Zelda. Though I think a more valid score would be 38/40 or 39/40

Don't think that's the case with Wind Waker though despite it's score.

Indeed, this game has lots of perfect scores. I can't shake the feeling that it wouldn't have received the 8's it did if it wasn't a Zelda game=big franchise, big responsabilities I guess...

I was wondering what's the general consensus on the extent to which Skyward Sword changes up the Zelda formula? Is it as radical a design departure as Majora's Mask was?

I'm not talking about Zelda here, just Famitsu. Famitsu are totally untrustworthy. Shadiest fucking major gaming publication on the planet. They could be giving Big Rigs a 0/40 and I still wouldn't believe their fraudulent arses.

Good for exclusives though! Lol.

Expected it. High rated games in Famitsu usually aim to gamers in general. "Yeah, but Nintendogs"... I can only say they got charmed with that game's cute content.

I don't know, is a Nintendogs game not capable of gettings 10s? I mean it's pretty much exactly what that kind of game should be like.

Look at it this way. A cartoon should never get rated 10 when such things as live action shows exist as well.

I'm unaware of their history. What about their reviews makes them shady?

Their history of exclusives and just a general air of being in the pockets of most Japanese game companies. Their recent 40's all seem highly predictable too- Metal Gear, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Smash Bros, Pokemon- I dunno, they do a poor job at seeming reliable. In the 90s, the only perfect scores they gave out were for Ocarina (of course), Soulcalibur and Vagrant Story (both a bit unusual but highly understandable). Then no perfects for another 3 years. After Nintendogs got 40/40, they seemed very off to me.
