Skyward Sword review thread [Newest Reviews - Cubed3 10/10, GC: A, AusGamers: 7/10]

6.8 (gamespot) - shenmue
7.9 (ign) - mario kart: dd
c- (gaming-age) - ninja gaiden
8.8 (gamespot) - twilight princess
8/10 (eurogamer) - uncharted 3

those are the five big ones. we'll see how this one goes.

Why did people give a shit about Double Dash getting a 7.9? The Mario Kart games have always gotten relatively "low" scores.

The logical explanation is that people give much less of a shit, and the average age of Zelda fans has matured. The environment was much different around TP, as the reputation and justification of the Wii was riding on it.

nah haha.
it is on the Wii.
not enough gamer cred to really get mad. not HD, motion controls, no online, etc. Most people dont really get too mad about portable game scores or weird japanese niche titles. anything on the wii is basically not core gamer mainstream fair right now.

before or after the wii u zelda?

both haha.
if the zelda cycle holds true SS will be the best game ever after WiiU zelda. It is truly amazing how it works.

to be honest I have been disappointed by the last 4 major zelda games (WW, TP, PH, ST). All had good to great things about them, but were heavily flawed as well. Wonder how SS will go down.

8.2 (gamespot) Deus Ex
4.9 (gamespot) Neverhood

Who really cares?

This game took huge risks, and it's clearly better for it. If a somewhat divisive critical reception is the cost, then so be it.

And just to be clear, 7.5 is a very low score for a Zelda game.

It'd be annoying if it seemed serious. But with the "spoilers-ahoy" review and with such a notable deviation from most other scores, my initial impression is that seems like a cheap cry for hits/attention/fame(infamy).

Thankfully, I gave-up caring about our mainstream gaming media a while ago. They aren't worth the increased blood pressure.

"After a controversial detour from the standard style with the unconventional Skyward Sword in 2011, Nintendo successfully returns to the formula that made Zelda a winner with The Legend of Zelda: Xanthor's Cudgel for Wii U. (8.3/10)"

But why is it all the US review that gives the lowest scores (IIRC)? Europe has been pretty much all set of "this is the best /Nintendo/Wii/Zelda game ever".

LOL i was looking for this! So a guy didn't enjoy it as much as others did. I'm too burned out to care, everything that could have been said has already been said in this thread.

I feel like this 7.5 won't be as big of a deal as the 8 for Uncharted or the 8.8 for TP. Maybe because it's coming from Gamespot again. It's pretty predictable and boring.

No, we were approaching almost meltdowns not too long ago when the reviews started coming out. It's that Eat Children moderated this thread pretty well and many were feeling self conscious from the recent Uncharted 3 8/10 meltdown on top of the TP 8.8 meltdown.

I also don't think we'll get a meltdown since it's a lot later than all the other reviews and people have been talking about it for a page waiting for a meltdown. Although I'm waiting for a certain 2 or 3 posters to respond to this that seem the most likely to freak out.

Americans too fat/lazy to use motion controls confirmed!

Having lived through that shit, it was a mixture of a few things: IGN had been hyping up the game for a while (complete with a "Better than MK64!" article), and people got caught on a few things in the review text like complaints about no costumes or orchestrated music, and whether it was fair to dock points for no online.

because europe's going bankrupt and needs all the money it can get.

I am pretty sure the only reason they delayed the review, was to wait for other reviews come out so their pretty low score stands out. It's the lowest score given to the game, right?

Anyhow, knowing that it has spoilers, I won't even bother reading it. Why do they include spoilers in the reviews?

I tend to ignore any of the big sites scores but I do like watching Game Trailers reviews. They seem to be pretty accurate and honest with what they think about a game. But the scoring is still stupid...what the hell is different between .8 and .9?

They are doing it for attention/hits just like the 8.8 review for TP was back in the day. GameSpot is so trashy lol.

Because American journalism, in all its forms, suck major ass

Just came in here to say: I wonder if there's going to be another GAF shitstorm here. I haven't read any of the reviews, nor played the game, nor even really care, but that score screams "take cover" to me haha.

Does Europe have something equivalent to dudebros? We're infested with them over here.

Who gives a crap, Gamespot lost its integrity years ago.

They're just trying to get more hits by being "controversial".

And shitty ass move by the reviewer for the spoilers. Horrible lack of professionalism.

my point is that it is easier to dismiss reviewers' opinions because of these reasons, hence the lack of self-entitled, have-not-played-this-game-yet-but-it-is-better-than-this-score meltdowns.

The human brain is a marvelous thing.

haha. Im pretty sure journalism is terrible in most parts of the world.

It's fine if you disagree with the review or the score or whatever, but calling it a desperate bid for hits is kind of gross. It's getting dangerously close to that crazy Uncharted 3 post where the dude said that it flew in the face of objective criticism to give the game an 8.

Still, putting major spoilers in your review is a dick move.

The Zeldapocalypse isn't happening, as we've become numb to the complaints and review scores.

i dunno how they do it now, but back in olden times, gamespot had some sort of mathematical system in place that would determine the final score. graphics, sound, etc were all weighted to a different degree and out would pop the different score. i think it's one of the reasons people trusted gamespot's reviews to be tougher than ign's back then.

edit: yay, a thread title change.

Why should there be? Gamespot writes a review after all major reviews are out with almost all giving very good reviews, it has factually wrong info (IR control), has spoilers, and gives the lowest score to the game?

Why should you take the review seriously were it has been written obviously to cause hits/rage?

Were they the site with the random ass "Tilt" category?

And I agree entirely.

damn you bear!!!

I agree if that GameSpot review is indeed spoiler filled the thread title should warn of that so no one goes into without being aware.
