I think it looks great.

My wife wears stuff close to that around the house. Should I berate her for being sexist or a gender traitor or something GAF? I am confused. Please guide me.
That's not what this thread is about. Read the OP. I like the alts -- I'm just curious about Sakurai feeling a need to justify it. I think it speaks to the nature of certain dialogues these days that he feels the need to say, "This was designed by a woman."

Looking forward to the outrage later today. Regardless, it's a cool nod to the GBA games. Unlocking all the additional ending screens in Zero Mission was fun as hell.

Immediately I found it weird that Sakurai felt he needed to justify it by mentioning a female designer.

I don't mind, personally, but it is entirely unnecessary. Sure, you could explain it away as giving fans the GBA alt, but in reality it's about giving fans an even sexier alternative costume for Samus. It was sexy fan service Samus on the GBA, and it's sexy fan service Samus now.

I hope no one sees this as an attack, but im curious. Would you be ok if she fought in this attire in other m or metroid prime.

What is dumb about the outfit? Like what exactly is dumb or doesnt "make sense"? How can yall say a outfit doesnt make sense? Its an outfit for crying out loud!
How about the fact that for someone who's regularly going into combat in the darkest reaches of space, it provides no protection at all and benefits her in no way? But oh wait, that's why she has the varia suit someone will say. But what does her having the varia suit prove, other than the fact that she's useless without it. But wait, someone will say that the suit gets hot and is tight and requires her to be skimpily dressed...well except for the part where she grows three more feet with the suit on and can shrink to the size of a basketball which makes any sort pseudo science explanation fall right over

And if none of that seems dumb, How about the extremely stupid heels?

Preemptive damage control. A pretty savvy move considering how quickly the internet can whip up a controversy.

wearing red in crip neighborhood doesnt make sense and thats an out fit.
Thats your argument? You must be joking.

No none of it seems dumb.. its a game she got a love hate relationship with a purple pteradatactyl.

Perhaps I misinterpreted what you said.

I just think it's weird that as soon as something like this happens, a lot of comments are along the lines of "wait until tumblr gets a load of this", indicating it's some hive mind.

Actually, we're on the same page there. lol

People just rush to get angry at tumblr bloggers and "social justice warriors," this time before those have even had a chance to say anything. Of course, Sakurai didn't help anything with that "female designer comment," but eh. I'm glad the thread has turned more toward everyone having a laugh.

I hope no one sees this as an attack, but im curious. Would you be ok if she fought in this attire in other m or metroid prime.
It would terrible if she fought in this attire in game, but not because it's "skimpy" or whatever. Like others have said, it's a sports suit. It offers no protection or any of the hardware of her Varia Suit. Narratively and gameplay wise, it's be an awful choice.

If basically saying "It's alright cause one woman signed off on it," as if to say the feelings of other women who may not like this costume don't matter because Sak has "one female friend" is him being savvy, he's not a very savvy guy. lol

That's why I find this so interesting. It shows that Sakurai expects a shitstorm over anything that shows some skin. I'm not sure he would've felt the need to do this a mere three years ago.

Change the heels out for actual boots (keep the jets in them though), and I've got no problem with this design.

Now. Let's get a release date, Nintendo.

how about the fact that this entire argument seems dumb and it's just fanservice in a videogame

I think it's less the outfit and more of her poses that's making her sexualized. She's arched in all these crazy painful-looking directions. It's almost escher girls territory.

Nice. Not really skimpy, looks like something some women would run in.

That's not to say it is not sexual, I mean, ZSS being really attractive is not a coincidence. That being said it is a cool fan service and I hope a few more characters get alts.

Nice job female designer, he might as well get that out of the way before hand, like before the Internet finds some way to cry about it.

I think they are very 2014, they fit the times, women like to be sexy as much as anyone else.

I am sure he had to state that is was designed by a female designer yes OP I believe he would have gotten some backlash for it.

Just tell me Bayonetta is in Smash4 though

Oh man, I'd love Bayonetta in SSB4

It isn't just fan-service.

When it was on GBA, it was intended as sexy Samus fan-service. "Hey, you completed the game according to some arbitrary challenge. Here are increasingly sexy depictions of Samus as a reward".

It is still sexy fan-service now. I don't have a problem with it, but that is what it is.

They changed a lot of her poses from Brawl. For example, her Brawl shooting pose looked like this.

I think they messed up the rigging in general when changing the animations, since the weird contortions are in both costumes.

The return of Brinstar in the 3DS version is discouraging for a few reasons.

  • Brinstar has been in every Smash Bros game; Planet Zebes in the first game was basically the same stage.
  • The version of Brinstar from Super Metroid, often considered the best Metroid game or among the best, looked nothing like the stage in Smash or the later Brinstar Depths stage.
  • There has been a lack of stage variety in general for Metroid, with every stage except Frigate Orpheon containing some form of lava or acid and every stage taking place in an interior environment. The Metroid series has a variety of environments from snowy mountains to murky waters to cities in the sky, so bringing back the acid cave again feels even more tired.
  • I want to see new interesting Metroid stages, and if the only new Metroid stage is the ugly and bland lava-filled Pyrosphere from Metroid Other M, I'll be very disappointed.

Yeah, Metroid being the host for lava stages is getting kind of lame. Just throw Bowser's Castle in there and give us one of the more unique unrepresented Metroid levels.

Wow, some people need to chill the fuck out.
It's a costume. Based on already available artwork from Metroid Fusion and Zero Mission.

How are those "unfitting for Smash Bros."?
Because Samus bares her midriff?
Please don't tell me that's the reason.

I miss the days when Tumblr wasn't relevant, that's for sure.

Ok, sexy fanservice is fan still fanservice.

If it wasn't referencing anything, it would not be in the game. To add to that, it was almost scrapped due to time constraints. It isn't like they made ZSS showing some skin a top priority.

I am sure Metroid fans and pervs everywhere will appreciate it.

Well, this went about as well as I expected it would. Headache city.

To answer OP's question, probably. But calling the outfit skimpy in the title was obviously going to steer the direction of a lot of posters; doesn't matter how much you clarify in the actual post lol

Ah yeah, sorry I was just taking the piss out of people saying stuff like this.
I have already seen a bunch of people posting "UGH SO GROSS" on Twitter, etc.

Yeah, I think it would've been better to just title it, "Smash Bros. gives Zero Suit Samus new outfit; Sakurai thanks 'female designer,'" but I was trying to find a word (that would fit on the subject line) to convey it was an alt showing more skin, so the second part would make sense. I tried to clarify in the OP, but many people don't read threads before responding.
