Thanks to the determination of her female designer...

"WE'RE NOT SEXIST"
*sakurai doesn't mention female designer*
"oh look, another product of a male-dominated industry"

*sakurai mentions female designer*
"oh look, an attempt to undermine our displays of superior morals"

Devs just can't win with this shit.

They ... didn't have to include the alternative costume. You are aware of that?

Another Losing situation for not including any

I'm totally fine with some fan service like this (it's canon, too!), but I'd like to see some more revealing male outfits as well to make it fair! As I said in the Smash Bros. thread...
Hm... If we can get revealing outfits like this for characters...perhaps there's hope for this...?

Assuming Shulk's in the game, of course. After all, it is a canon outfit for him! ;)

I'll give it one last go. I'm sure you can understand. If not, tell me where I lost you.

1. Fanservice isn't inherently sexual.

CI16_WiiU_Bayonetta2_image600w.png

Let's make sure we understand this first. If a character in Smash Bros. has a move or taunt that's a reference to their prior games, that is fanservice. For instance, the way Megaman moves in Smash is fanservice.

2. Giving Samus an outfit that she wears as a sexy fanservice reward for completing the GBA games under certain constraints is both fanservice, and 'sexy' fanservice. It's a nod to an earlier game where it was sexy fanservice there, also.

No dude, it is fanservice. Putting "sexy" in front of it doesn't change that, and if the costume was not referencing something fans of the series would not be able to recognize... it wouldn't be in the game.

Eh, just need to balance it out by giving all males speedos alts. Right?

Only if it is a reference to one of their games.

If you want a bit of male skin pray for something like Link's sumo outfit from Twilight Princess.

Or maybe most people decide they like/don't care about the costume.

*sakurai mentions female designer*

Or maybe most people decide they appreciate that women were involved in the development of the game.

Devs just can't win with this shit.
I know. Especially when you decide one side's arguments before they even have a chance to weigh in.

Not a lot of canon Zero suit Samus alts are possible honestly. People should get over it. Not everything is a cause to raise arms and be a social justice warrior about it. Its a canon outfit, and the cast is getting alts and Zero suit is a very limited character to make alts for.

I swear sometimes it feels like the internet can't tell the difference between real issues and things that are not offensive. So help me if folks start getting told to "check our privelege" like its tumblr or something for making character alts that are canon and make sense then we've got no sense of perspective left.

I dont think the majority of smash fans are excited because its a revealing outfit. (Its just showing legs and belly) Its because its an recognized alternate costume. We should not be turning this into a see-saw kinda thing.

Don't really see what the problem is. Looks like typical sports wear. I've seen females wear skimpier outfits at the gym of my campus.
They ... didn't have to include the alternative costume. You are aware of that?

And undermine the efforts of her female designer?

Not really a new outfit, but anyway.

As I said in the other topic, I'm totally down with some cheesecake, but there better be some beefcake alts too. I'm not cool with only female characters being sexualized, when you've got a bevy of appropriate male characters that could also get the same treatment.

I don't know if I'm prepared for swim trunks Falcon.

Are people really bitching at Sakurai for putting Samus in short shorts? This is a character who was shown wearing a bikini, so this is hardly treading into porn territory.

Outside of missing my point, again, I'm not even sure that fanservice is sexual. I mean, Bayonetta is already presented as a 'sexy' character. That just seems like putting fanservice costumes on a 'sexy' character. Anyway, it appears I lost you at point 1.

No dude, it is fanservice. Putting "sexy" in front of it doesn't change that, and if the costume was not referencing something fans of the series would not be able to recognize... it wouldn't be in the game.

I'm not denying it's fanservice. I'm saying that, in addition to that, it is sexy fanservice. They are re-upping on the decision made in the Zero Mission games to include sexy fanservice using Samus. That is what it is. You can't just explain away choices that might be seen as tasteless as "Well, it's fanservice, so it's ok". They decided it wasn't a problem (or, more aptly, that it isn't a problem if the decision was entirely in the hands of a female designer) and included it. It has as much inherent relevancy as pajama cap Mario.

I can see Nintendo trying out a "Summertime DLC" for Smash Bros. that gives all the characters swimwear. Kids and adults enjoy swimwear, right?

That is, if Nintendo decides to even give SSB4 any longtime content support. Between Namco's involvement and Sakurai possibly wanting other projects, it's most likely not a priority.

This is pure snark but Samus was nekkid in SSB64.

You had to pause it at just the right time when she's getting electrocuted.

I don't get it, they are faithful to the originals which I don't recall ever seeing people point out as misogynist or skimpy.

Things have changed in the last two years or so.. Tons of threads about people wanting gender swaps (Maria, female link, Zelda as main etc.), people criticizing how female characters are portrayed in games, Sarkeesian threads, Shitstorm Ubisoft AC threads and on and on.

No. This thread was made, if I'm understanding correctly, to discuss the reasons why Sakurai made the "female designer" comment. That is, discuss how the current debate surrounding female characters might have led Sakurai to make that comment and may have changed how devs talk about their games.

No one is upset yet, unless there is a post in this thread I missed. Most people in here like the costume.

Exactly. I don't get how anybody would be bothered by this. Do people also go to the boardwalk and throw dollar bills at female joggers or something? Do they not leave the house at all during the summer? Maybe Abaya Suit Samus would have been more appropriate, because women are not allowed to show even an inch of skin apparently.

They're good alt costumes btw.

And so we lose another content then.

And the we get less...yay?

I suppose. Or they could include something like this:

It remains to be seen if they exhausted all possible alternative costumes before deciding on the one with the least clothing, if there aren't multiple.

Don't get me wrong. I don't mind the costume. I just don't buy the flimsy excuse that there was no way around including it.

Sakurai's comment has no hidden meaning. He's just saying that designing these outfits needed a woman's touch.

Bruh... Whats wrong with less clothes? Like what is so wrong about it? Can someone explain this to me because we have been having threads about these kinda things all year and Im not quite sure why people are finding it offensive..

That requires a new model, whereas these are just a texture mod. He said it was implemented during crunch time so of course they went with the easier option.

Considering how bad that game reputation, u must be joking right???

Exactly. Some people are replying without reading the OP. This thread is not complaining about this costume. In fact, as the thread creator, I love it!

Rather, this thread is about whether the Internet has become "over-sensitive" in a way that is making people jumpy, hence Sakurai adding the "female designer" caveat for fear people will jump him over showing a bit of skin.

Something that people wouldn't even bat an eye at in real life -- or in gaming, for that matter, mere years ago -- now has the potential to be the source of vehement outcry. It's an interesting point of reflection, is all.

Oh shit, I didn't even know this was a different thread, lol.

I saw "Smash Bros." in the title and figured it was the official thread.

edit: Though to answer your question, plenty of people have been whining about "fanservice" a couple pages back.

To be fair neiteo the thread title is kind of clicky with the female comment in there.

You can argue they wanted to go with the least clothing possible (to which I'd say the Super Metroid sub-3 hour sprite probably would've been), and I could argue they wanted to go with something from two fan favorite games rather than a game that faired poorly with fans or the one that required the least additional modeling and artist resources given the apparent squeeze to fit these two in.

Well, if this is the main topic, I guess because of Internet also? With internet giving us protection on every word we types, it is not suprising to see people complaining on almost everything lol. Even when the thing is not really a huge problem but well, seeing others butthurt reaction is great right? And being social justice knight is always nice lol.

Fanservice alt outfit for fanservice character*. Nothing exciting here.

* - In the sense that Zero Suit Samus is a separate playable character from Samus.

Bruh... Whats wrong with less clothes? Like what is so wrong about it? Can someone explain this to me because we have been having threads about these kinda things all year and Im not quite sure why people are finding it offensive..

It's a design taken from a game in which depicting Samus with less clothing was simply sexy fanservice.

That requires a new model, whereas these are just a texture mod. He said it was implemented during crunch time so of course they went with the easier option.

I'm not quite sure it requires a new model, at least any more than Little Mac's hoodie does.

So...censorship?

I ... suppose? I'm not sure if choosing to include something arguably more relevant and less potentially sexual is censorship.

I'm trying to think what risque costumes the smash fellers could have.

Did Robin get in a swim costume for that summer DLC?
If Shulk's in (for the love of god please) he could have his "swim gel".
Pit could be shirtless like after he got
resurrected in the fountain of life
.
I don't know if there's a justification for Ike getting down to his essentials, but c'mon Sakurai throw me a bone.

The "female designer" is kind of cringeworthy. Seems pretty obvious what they're doing.
Yup. They knew people would be mad with the pointless fanservice (which was pointless and cringeworthy in Metroid titles as well), so they put the "female designer" in the caption to cover it.

Disappointing. Bringing Zero Suit Samus to Smash was already a bad decision in Brawl and now they just made it even worse.
