Smash Wii U & 3DS Downloadable Characters Discussion and Information on Smash Ballot

Adventures has a great soundtrack and visuals tied down by being a OoT clone that could've been better fleshed out into something special if Rare didn't have to focus instead on porting it over to the GCN and pasting Star Fox characters into it during the last year or so of development.

Assault has fun multiplayer, similarly great soundtrack and a plot that properly continues along Star Fox 64's while still integrating Rare's stuff (on that note I think having Andrew try and command what was left of Andross' army in Assault was a far more interesting direction than just having Andross return yet again in SF0, but I guess he's too iconic to leave alone so whateves), but suffers from a lack of polish and a focus on on-foot missions no one wanted.

Command is really the only one that doesn't have much of anything going for it beyond hilariously crappy fan-fiction endings. Can't say I'm completely torn-up about Zero going back to basics, but I wouldn't have minded Krystal and Panther being re-written into SF64's style at least. Maybe you could have Sauria return as a SF64 style level or something, I dunno.

Well to be fair Assault was an arcade game first that got turned into a console game. It's why multiplayer is amazing.

They're not in Sector Z.

Iwata was the one who suggested the Fighter Ballot to Sakurai. So if K. Rool (or any other character) gets in as DLC, it will be because of Iwata.

...I need a tissue. Say what you want about his leadership, but the man cared about us.

The entire series as we know it exists thanks to Iwata helping and trusting Sakurai.

Very true. Iwata was who helped Sakurai come back for Brawl. Iwata believed without Sakurai directing the game, it just wouldn't be Smash Brothers.

I can't imagine how Sakurai is feeling today. I know I feel bad for Iwata's passing, but Sakurai lost a friend.

Iwata's passing made me realize I would have never met the wonderful people of SmashGAF without him. Love y'all.

Yeah, man. I made many good friends and best friends because of Smash Bros (and other games.) Also I met many wonderful people here where I always enjoying to discuss with. I truly appreciate Iwata for what he have done for all of us together. Here for us to enjoy the games that he blessed us with for next many years!

I need a source on that because it is my first time that I have heard about it.

I was thinking of how Smash Bros. could honor Iwata, and while I think adding in Iwata himself is a bit much (especially since Mii Fighters were introduced with his Mii), maybe we could rally together and vote for Balloon Fighter? I don't remember the full story, but I know it's a game Iwata held near to his heart, and he had a huge part in the programming.

My only concern with this would be the fact that Villager took Balloon Fighter's potential gimmick, but I don't think that matters at this point. If nothing else, Balloon Fighter was considered as far back as Melee (but lost to the Ice Climbers).

I think it's a time to fuck the logic behind the reasoning and just go with heart.

This is so true. Iwata has been there since the very beginning and has been as much of a crucial part as Sakurai himself. Everyone should reread all the Iwata asks with Sakurai as they really show his love for the series and why he entrusted Sakurai to continue it.

Smash Bros. has always been my favorite video game series of all time and now I'll always think about Iwata when I play it.

Oh I love this idea! I'm going to vote now with a message honoring Iwata. I've always loved the idea of Balloon Fighter in Smash and now I want it to happen more than ever.

Man, Iwata is even behind this game. I feel sadder now.

Ah I thought you mean Corneria in general.

Yeah, Iwata is one of few reason why Smash Bros made to the public.

Even though Iwata was Masahiro Sakurai’s supervisor at Hal, they enjoyed a close working relationship and respected each other. Iwata produced two of Sakurai’s Kirby games. Later, when Sakurai came up with a way to revolutionize the fighting game genre, he approached Iwata to help program the prototype.

However, Iwata’s involvement did not stop there. Iwata helped Sakurai receive permission from Shigeru Miyamoto in order to use Nintendo characters in their new fighting game. Originally, Miyamoto turned down Iwata’s idea. Despite this, Iwata convinced Sakurai to demonstrate the idea to Miyamoto while withholding the fact that Miyamoto has already said ‘no’. This demonstration by Sakurai got Miyamoto’s approval, and thus Nintendo All Stars: Super Smash Brothers was officially born.

Sakurai came into work today

Sakurai, please just rest for a few days. It's only a couple of silly N64 maps. Go home

Sakura said it differently.
“Even though it’s an abnormal day, and I’m an in abnormal state of mind, I went to work as normal and am continuing development as normal. This would be what Mr. Iwata would have wanted, after all. I will do what I must.”

I thought I'd also post this here since it involves characters in Smash (plus one who will inevitably join the Smash family at some point or another).

Iwata not only had an impact on Smash itself, but on each of the franchises that have or will be introduced into the game in some way. We're gonna miss you, Iwata.

Also, an artist named Akuo made these.

Join the club. I guess that's what the Smash Ballot is for, which we also have Iwata to thank for its existence.

That's sticky situation. I asked Gonzo for the source, and no one ever provided the source to prove that Iwata actually came up with it. We have been getting ballots ever since Smash 64, but it's first time that they actually provide the ballot to Worldwide audiences.

I believe Iwata said he proposed the ballot in the April 2015 Direct.

Wouldn't it be amazing if Ballon Fighter used the "Directly" gesture in his move set somewhere?

I’m not trying to downplay Iwata’s contributions — he was a genius, and he’s the only public figure whose death has really affected me — but I don’t think including Balloon Fighter would be a fitting memorial. Iwata programmed the game, but he didn’t design it or come up with the character. Iwata left his mark on Balloon Fight through its gameplay, which is already fully represented through Villager’s up special.

I'd be okay with Balloon Fight getting a character, it's up there with Excitebike when it comes to well-known NES games without playable characters in Smash. The prospect of doing it for Iwata is also really sweet.

That said, Villager has his gimmick already. Unless Sakurai can think of a way to make the character really special, there's not much appeal to adding him. The fact that we're 4 installments in and we're seeing stuff like Villager's up-B and even a Balloon Fight stage before we're seeing the character makes me think Sakurai has decided there's not enough merit to adding him.

It'd be a really kind gesture and I don't think it's too far out there, but I think if Sakurai could have done it he would have by now (iirc he was considered as far back as Melee).

1. We know that he only programmed the game but he really is passionate about Balloon Fight.

2. Who care about the logic. We are doing it out of our loves and respects for Iwata. For once, just put your logic aside and show the loves. Ugh, why are you being so serious about it right now. It might be someone's way to express their mourning for Iwata by voting for Ballon Fighter. Why you wouldn't say it in Iwata thread?

I agree. An Iwata tribute in Smash Bros. would be a nice thing to see, but I don't think a DLC character like Balloon Fighter would really be a good fit. If anything, I think it should be something small and free. Personally, I'd love to see a Mii Fighter outfit based on Iwata's iconic suit he always wore.

Yesterday I was messing around with sound test in Melee and realized just how boring the crowd cheers are in Smash 4.

Except inexplicably the Melee vets that weren't in Brawl (Doc, Mewtwo and Roy) have re-done versions of their more interesting Melee chants. Ganondorf is the only other one that managed to keep his interesting Melee chant, although it doesn't sound as good now. DK's was also improved (as was turning Luigi in Weegee).

It's also funny, Ganondorf has Falcon Punch's entire sound effect set in his sounds in Melee. His snoring in Melee is also just a stock male snoring sound, likely because 100% of his sounds were ripped directly from Ocarina of Time, which obviously has no snoring Ganondorf. His new re-recorded proper snore is so much better, since it sounds like a sleeping pig, which is really appropriate for Ganondorf.

Also Smash 4's sound test is garbage compared to Melee. Melee has the character's entire sound effect bank AND repeats Mario's entire library for Doc just so every character has a sound test. And it includes the crowd cheers.

Just one of those things they could clean up in a patch, but won't...

I just want them to fix the DK Rap. Might as well remove it from the game altogether if they're going to use such a butchered version.

The Chunky and Lanky parts are the best parts of the song too. The Diddy part is awful, you can't even understand the singer.

I always liked the laugh after "one HECK of a guy" because it's like they wanted to poke at how they changed the words a bit. Also the Lanky part where he says "just for you" in sort of seductive manner is hilarious. Grant should sue.

And yet Yoshi gets a 4 minute song...

I fail to understand how Villager having one move based on Balloon Fighter means he can't be in.

Balloon Fighter could always have the balloons on his back, not just when pressing up B. They could be popped but then respawn after a certain time. His jumping would be completely different. He could be amazing in the air but bad on the ground (opposite of Mac) and great with his balloons and bad without (Like Rosalina with Luma)

Bonus points for a taunt doing the "direct" pose!

Reading about all the trouble Sakurai had getting Olimar to work on the 3DS makes me believe Alph isn't a clone because of how difficult it was just to get Olimar working. They probably didn't want to dedicate time to QA testing another Pikmin using character, since it'd require much more testing than the other clones.

They've made great strides in the optimization and AI of Smash 3DS. It's a shame Alph is probably going to be stuck as an alt for the rest of time.

Yeah, man. I had exactly same thought when I read the article few days ago It would be awful nice if we got 4 clones.

Also remember this,

Rock Pikmin were planned but ultimately put on hold. It’s unknown if development had begun on these Pikmin, but they likely would have been added had there been more time. Rock Pikmin would have been heavy with short reach but high attack power.

It would've been nice for there to have been a small chance of pulling a Rock Pikmin instead of a Purple Pikmin, even if they functioned identically.

Rock Pikmin being stronger than Purple Pikmin would make Alph the superior clone. Really wished that there was also an alt for Louie, Brittany, Charlie, and the President.

Iwata's passing is even more depressing seeing how hands-on he was in his approach.

I doubt that would have been the case, since Purple Pikmin are stronger than Rock Pikmin in Pikmin 3. Rock Pikmin's "gimmick" is that they can break hard objects, so they probably would've functioned as shield breakers.

Rock Pikmin could roll when thrown, making them slower to return.

They could also weigh down Alph more when using his up special.

Alph also wouldn't have White Pikmin, which are good at racking up damage.

Although maybe having one less Pikmin choice than Olimar is actually a buff, since it lets you grab Blues faster for the kill throws.

If they added in Flying Pikmin to Alph's rotation, I suppose they would have had homing capabilities.

I don't think that's possible on the 3DS

See, the Pikmin on the 3DS appear to be "cheating" with their animations. All of them use exactly the same animations at exactly the same time, unless they're actively being used or are "detached" from Olimar (IE, if they get stuck or fall behind). Watch them closely. They all idle with the exact same animation, at exactly the same time. I'm pretty sure they even all walk at the same time with the same exact animation on the same frames. It's kind of freaky once you notice it. It's probably a clever way to not need to load different animations and to keep everything stable, especially since Pikmin run at like 5fps and have 9 polygons.

Flying Pikmin couldn't do this because their animations are entirely different.
