So, MGS3 demo is out...

Does ISO 9660 (CD-ROM XA) = UDF?

Anyway, I am burning it on CD and will test it at home tonight. I've created an ISO 9660 image file with Toast that include (in order): SYSTEM.CNF, SCUS_973.39, SCE_DD directory and MGS directory... If it works, I will create RAR archives and will correct my mistake by republishing another torrent...

Dark10x will have a heart attack. 30fps? Sucks. I hope the final game runs at 60...

WHERE DO YOU THINK I'VE BEEN!!!

I've been passed out on the floor for two hours because of that news. GIVE ME MY DAMN 60!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (throws PS2 on the floor in disgust)

F*ck! I guess a constant 30 fps is better than the ups and downs of TTS, but STILL... :(

That's it, my day is ruined. :P

edit - The thing that boggles my mind is that some of the recent videos (NOT from this demo) suggested that it was still going to pull 60. While the video was certianly not captured at 60 fps, there was some slowdown present in that video...and it was handled in the same way as MGS2 (ie - it actually draws all frames, but seems to run "slowly" as a result). I can't imagine that this would occur in a 30 fps game...

Well, hopefully it is at least a smooth 30 fps...

Still, the recent lack of 60 in games these days is really hurting. Katamari Damashii, MGS3, Gungrave OD and Shadow Hearts 2 were all games I EXPECTED to run at 60...and not one of them did. I'm still enjoying those games (well, the 3 I own right now at least), but it's very bothersome to me. At least Star Ocean 3 didn't disappoint.

This fall has so much gaming goodness (across all platforms), but almost all of it is 30 fps goodness. THANK YOU RETRO for giving me Metroid Prime 2 at 60 fps.

R&C3 and Jak 3 are definite 60FPS as well. Same with Ace Combat 5.

Sorry to disappoint about MGS3, from the DVD videos I thought it would be 60FPS myself, due to specific motion artifacting, but no such luck.

As for the slowdown, I didn't see any in the short time I've played the demo, but I didn't have any encounter with the enemies in that time. If you can't imagine it won't be there due to game being 30FPS, you really should wait and see the game first. It's just *MUCH* more complex looking than the MGS2.

So it was constant from your playtime?

Hopefully it can hold that...

I mean, TTS was so bad that it often dropped from 60 to sub-30 fps. If they went with 30 fps to avoid a Twin Snakes like situation, I suppose I can get used to it. I wish the 30 fps was offset with 480p support, though...

I mean, MGS2 could be run in 480p mode with a little work...so I don't understand why they couldn't add it in this time around.

I can't wait to try the demo myself, 4 more hours to go.

It would be nice if Marconelly could make the ISO boot the MGS3 demo automatically.

I need to get this or my brother will kill me, where the hell can i get the demo, is it in the official PSM? i hope the Portguese version has it this month.....

Dark, MGS2 can be run in the progressive scan mode using the blaze adapter. MGS3 runs in the full height buffer mode, so I'm assuming it can be forced in progressive too. Why they don't add the damn option to do it natively, I have no clue. Well, actually we don't know yet if there will be an option or not.

Yeah, I've seen MGS2 in progscan and it looks fantastic. However, I don't actually OWN that Blaze adaptor due to the fact that it is so hit or miss...

It would rock so hard if MGS3 had an option for progressive scan support natively.

Is this demo supposed to quit out when you encounter the first soldier? It's happened to me twice now at around the same spot. At first I thought it timed out and went back to the menu but then when I skipped all that stuff, it happened again.

Shit...

I missed this question. Yes, it was rock solid. Again, if you can imagine yourself playing Silent Hill 2/3/4, that's the kind of the 'framerate feeling' you get in MGS3. The game is so pretty, though. There's so much little detail everywhere, and due to the nature of the camera, you don't look at the objects at the closeup very often, so even though some textures are not really high res, you rarely notice that.

Two questions:

- Are you playing Lareunt's RIP, or the actual demo disc from the magazine?

- The location where you encounter the first soldier, is there a long sequence of codec or the animation before it? You need to keep pressing buttons on the controller every now and then, or move the sticks, or else, the OPM demos time out after just 2-3 minutes, if you don't touch the controller.

1. i used ultraiso to open the iso and i moved all the files into a folder
2. i opened CDGENPS2 and i moved into it the following files in this order:
- SYSTEM
- SCUS_973.39
- MGS (FOLDER)
- SCE_DD

The go in this order since folders go before the files

- MGS (FOLDER)
- SCE_DD
- SYSTEM
- SCUS_973.39

3. I ignored all the other files.
4. I went to FILES-CREATE CD and saved it as an ISO file.
5. I put it into HDLOADER (using HDLDUMB)

IT DOENS'T WORK!
Why?

What did i in wrong way?
Thanks

THE DEMO ISN'T ROCK SOLID 30 FPS.

THE DEMO DOESN'T QUIT WHEN YOU ENCOUNTER THE FIRST SOLIDER...

I was detected 3 times in the red ruins where I am suposed to deliver Sokolov, and the framerate dropped constantly while I was performing unwanted stunts, dodging bullets. Come on, the trees, the barrels, the walls... The game is great, but the framerate is not constant; at least for now...

What did i in wrong way?

Hm, frankly, I don't know. Other than moving the SCE_DD folder first, and then the MGS one, and using WinHIIP to transfer ISO over (which really should make no difference) that's exactly what I did, and it works. I didn't change any compatibility settings in the HDLoader, btw, everything is at default.

Which CDGenPS2 version do you use? I have 3.0, which is the latest one.

Marconelly, do you think that an ISO 9660 file burned on a CD-ROM in the proper order would work?
This is what I've found on the PS2 CD filesystem:

The CD should be Mode 2 ISO format :

- Use ISO9660 level 1 filesystem
- Use ISO9660 character set
- Disable Joliet
- Disable any ISO9660 relaxations.

Demo burned on a disc should work, for sure (if you have a modchip). To be 100% sure, I'd use CDGenPS2 to make ISO (or BIN) and then use CDRWIN or something like that to burn it. Then again, you're on Mac, right?

With Toast 6 Titanium, I can make an adequate ISO 9660 level 1 (Mode 2 = CD-ROM XA right?) image disc, without the Desktop DB and Desktop DF, in the proper order and without Apple extensions. Unfortunately, such options aren't available for UDF image files with that application. I will create a RAR archive from it, and once I'll be sure it works with Swap Magic (the only way I can test it right now), I will publish a new torrent...

Am I missing anything?

Yeah, just do the ISO 9660 level 1, and it should be fine. I'm not sure if Mode 2 = CD-ROM XA, though, but it should be.

You may want to wait for me to test if the demo works when booted directly into it, before making a new ISO. That way you can just modify it the same way I'll do and have the 'perfect' thing.

Good lord you people need to stop being framerate whores. Also, I doubt the demo for MGS3 has the polish the final product will have in terms of framerate issus and slowdown.

I used the 2.0 ver.
Now I will try the 3.
Thanks!

Use 3.0 for sure!! It has several improvements, most notably fixed some serious bugs that have to do with proper ISO image creation. With 2.0 you are probably better off making a BIN image and transferring that.

Just for fun, isn't this against the TOS?
It's the demo... no direct link is posted, and several of us actively discussing it are buying the mag anyways. I buy almost every issue because of the demo disc anyways, but I'll gladly risk being banned if that means playing MGS3 demo a week earlier :P

Marconelly, do you have the link to the forum that was talked about that has these instructions for extracting and burning this demo or can someone give a step by step method to burning this to a cd, I don't have a PS2 HD so I can't use the HDloader. I have burned this 3 times now and no go so far, Thanks! :)

I want to make fun of dark10x for MGS3 being 30fps, but I'm too upset. :(

Btw, for those that want the demo, it is up on a particularly popular site that provides torrent trackers. I will say no more.

For what it's worth, MGS2 was more polished than the demo, like some effects looked better in the final game, one in particular that I remember clearly is during the Snake vs. Olga cutscenes on the tanker, sparks produced from the knife hitting the floor for example look much better in the final game compared to the demo, and there's a bunch of other small changes (for the better) here and there... I'm sure it'll be similar with MGS3, especially considering this is the E3 demo and not the [presumably] updated TGS one.

Well, the instructions were mine, and are posted in this thread here on the third page. Adelgary just copied and pasted those instructions to another forum.

Do I have to do anything to make this demo (SCUS_97339.iso) work? Burned it, doens't work. :/
Yes, you have to do something - just read this thread carefuly, starting from page 3, and you'll see what needs to be done.

Download speeds are slow on this tracker because there is only 4 seeders, and 714 leechers (and growing by the minute) as of now... Greedy bastards :P

Which tracker? pm, please. The Suprnova one doesn't even get off the ground.

Fun Fact: Suprnova isn't a tracker

Also, check the error message, you need to register with the tracker to download.

Very clear instructions have been given out in previous pages on how to find the site, get smart or get out! :P

How fast are loading speeds on HDloader?

Damn download is going so slow. Like 26 hour download slow. But I can wait.

And the tracker sucks too

But thanks for the rip, rox

Like I said, I've bought my copy in the Montréal area. The magazine as a silver wrapping, with a huge white squary "3" (like the MGS2 logo used to promote Sons of Liberty back in 2001) on a green/brown camouflage (army-type of course). The inscription METAL GEAR SOLID is written inside the 3 (with the mention that it is the only way to play the game before it's american release).

Fun Fact: I never said it was.

The error message says:

Error -
bad date from tracker - invalid lateral for long(): bconn

[edit] I got a second error message. But I need to make the window bigger to see the entire URL. Once I do that, the error message disappears. Jeeeesus.

[edit] ok, got it.

It's very snappy. 1, 2 or 3 seconds at most, depending on the scene loaded. About on par with MGS2 installed on the HDD, from what I could tell. I have only tried it for a bit though, haven't even moved from one 'room' to another, but I've seen one scene load, one cut scene and two codecs.

Just finished my download and its seems to play fine after doing what Marconelly advised to get it working. Loading times seem pretty good so far, about 2-3 secs between loading up the individual intro cutscenes and getting into gameplay and such.

Whatever Kojima said about less cutscenes though... he must have been pissed or something (and as I type this the game went back to the menu screen since I had left it alone for about 30 secs to type, feck arse shit!).

Game looks lovely, love the voices and the new radio/codec screen (it gives you multiple images of the characters you are in contact with and 2 info screen that tell you thir weight and such along with their voice and motion actor. Its just going to make the wait for the UK version even longer :(

It's not very long not counting the codec and intro cutscenes. There's a cool thing where you can just hold down all 4 face buttons and zoom through the codec chatter.

There's 5 or six jungle rooms. One is pretty empty, one has just gators and crap, then there's 2 or 3 with guys with nades and ak's, maybe 10 people to kill in all.

Neo contra seems like crap to me.

It's the very beginning of the game, though. Of course it's going to be cutscene/codec heavy. We'll se how it goes for the rest of the game. He definitely was quoted saying something like "we built this whole jungle, and we want to let people play in it for a long time". Also, I remember reading that the amount of cut scenes will be less than the first MGS or around that. So we'll see.

You only need to press and hold triangle button from what I've seen.
