So, MGS3 demo is out...

It's the very beginning of the game, though. Of course it's going to be cutscene/codec heavy. We'll se how it goes for the rest of the game. He definitely was quoted saying something like "we built this whole jungle, and we want to let people play in it for a long time". Also, I remember reading that the amount of cut scenes will be less than the first MGS or around that. So we'll see.

True, and to be honest I don't have too much of a problem with it but its always amusing when your brother walks out of the room after seeing the first 5 secs of the intro and comes back 10 mins later to see if you have been able to move Snake yet :D (Hes does exactly the same thing with Resident Evil games, except he walks back in the room to see if the buildings self destruct sequence has started yet)

Fun Fact: I never said it was.

The error message says:

Error -
bad date from tracker - invalid lateral for long(): bconn

Bah, I rebooted and now I'm getting that error too.

30 minutes left to go for me :P

This whole "leave the controller for a little while and the demo will reset" thing is bothering me, I really hope there's a way around it, maybe if you get rid of the OPM frontend completely?

Marconelly, I've burn 2 different version, one with the OPM menu and the other calling directly the MGS3.ELF file. Neither of them will booth for me. This is probably has to do with Toast and the fact that some settings aren't available...

I've done what I could folks! I don't have access to a PC, so I can't do what Marconelly suggested...

Can't get it to work with swap magic. Boots up but only to a blank screen.

Laurent, can't you just torrent the full DVD RARed?

I just found another torrent for the MGS3 demo. It's rared and only weighs at 427 mb. I can't connect to the tracker but I'm sure download speeds are shitty at this time

Ok just connected to the tracker. Wow, downlaod speeds are actually good! I'll actually download it before Laurent's torrent is finished, and I started that one like 7 hours ago.

Can you give us a hint as to where this new torrent can be found?

BT to the EASTGAME

Google is your friend

Do you really need that CDGenPS2 crap to get it to work? Cause I've saved my legitimate games with Nero all the time....copying files over to my HD, taking out the dummy files, then making a crude ISO image with Nero. Works everytime

Hmm interesting, I'm running out of space on my PS2 HDD, I like your idea of removing the dummy files, how do you recognize them?

All my games that I've ripped dummy files from, already have a file that is titled as 'dummy'. Simply make a new file and rename it to the same name, making it 0 bytes. Make a new image and replace the dummy file.

If the dummy file isn't so obvious, then get a hex editor and open some files. If they open up with full of 0's, it's a dummy file.

There's also another method that they use to push the game data towards the end of the disc (and thus, using unnecessary hard drive space). Some games like Disgaea will have the game's data disc push towards the outer edge of the disc without a dummy file. For these games, just copy the files to your HD and create a new ISO with it. I'm just trying to get the most out of my PS2 HD.

I haven't tried copying Katamari Damacy over but I think that game has like a 1 gig dummy file or something.

Great thanks, I'll try that sometime... Don't feel like reinstalling all my games right now, will take forever.

What settings in Nero do you use to build the image?

Whatever the hell the default settings are. I don't mess with the settings and it works perfectly.

Looks like the torrent I downloaded from isn't made for HDL either, just tried it without remaking the ISO. Gonna do that now with my Nero method...

Creating the ISO with Nero works fine, no need to mess with that other method. I find it easier too.

Wario, is that 400+ MB torrent supposed to pick up? I'm getting ~5 kbps for some reason. :/

I downloaded at 130k/sec and only uploaded like .44mb through the entire torrent session. Blazing fast for me

and wtf, the framerate sucks. *cancels preorder

I was using the ISO that was in that torrent, not the actual disc demo since it's nowhere around this area unlses someone can point it out to me in the bay area. So any idea why this would stop at the same point and kick back out to the main menu?

I just spent 50 minutes with the demo :D

I followed Marconelly's instructions closely and had no trouble booting this up with HDLoader.

I didn't skip any cutscenes or codec sequences, and I was taking my sweet time exploring the environments and checking the menus. I only got up to the point where you encounter the first two enemy soldiers, I was laying on the ground with my camo meter reading 90% and the soldier was walking right by without detecting me, but then I got the idea to shoot him with the tranquilizer gun, and as soon as I touched the analog stick to turn around in order to face him, he was alerted so I froze and didn't touch anything hoping he'd dismiss it, but after a few seconds he freaked out, starting firing at me and called for backup :( I ran off and quit the demo because I need to sleep, but not before posting some impressions here :)

The game is gorgeous, during the intro I didn't read any of the subtitles because I couldn't take my eyes off the upper portion of the screen, the graphics are jaw dropping, better than MGS2 IMO.

I was sad that there's no option in the demo to invert first-person camera, I use invert in all games and it's difficult for me to adjust to this.

I collected a few food items, a snake, a tree frog, and some fruit.

WTF is up with the alligators not dying? I fired about 10 bullets at one of them with the .45 gun, it became a bloody mess but didn't die! Also when tranquilizing them, they wake up and attack you the second you walk over them.

If you spend any amount of time standing in the mud swamp, you drown and die, must keep moving.

The life-detecting sonar is so cool, you'd have no idea that there's anything living around you from the normal camera view point, then you activate the sonar and there are dots all around, enter FPS mode and sure enough you can see them crawling in the grass, ready for you to kill them for food if you choose to.

30fps doesn't really bother me, in fact I totally forgot about it and didn't notice it until about 15 minutes in or something, then it came to my mind, and I moved Snake around while trying to remember if it looks/feels any different than MGS2 (I'm not a framerate expert like some of you), and I noticed that yes there is an obvious difference, but apparently I'm blessed with it not bothering me if I'm not thinking about it. Sure I'm still hoping the final game can pull off 60fps since there IS a difference, but if it doesn't, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

There's A LOT of screen tearing in FPS mode, especially if there's a field of tall grass in front of you. Now that bothers me more so than the 30fps. I hope it's not as bad in the final game.

The codec conversation between Snake and The Boss was quite emotional and touching, I can see that this game will probably have a much stronger emotional impact than the previous two... Well MGS did have it's really strong moments, but MGS2's "drama" was mostly cookie-cutter to me.

It's so strange seeing Big Boss (Snake) as a total rookie in the beginning of this game, he's much less experienced than the Solid Snake we know from MGS and MGS2... Such a contrast from the badass Big Boss we always heard about from those games.

There's still so much for me to see and do in the demo, but that will have to wait till tomorrow, I'll update with more of my thoughts about it later.

More stupid questions...

What exactly does the HDLoader do? Like, why/when is it necessary? Doesn't it just emulate the PS2 HD?

HDloader lets you transfer PS2 games to your hard drive and run it directly from the hard drive, eliminating the need of the actual game disc and reduces load time

I got it working on a messiah chipped ps2

I extracted the files from the iso and burned it to a dvd with these settings in nero

iso/udf
- Use ISO9660 level 1 filesystem
- Use ISO9660 character set
- Disable Joliet
- Disable any ISO9660 relaxations

Worked perfect all the way through.

To kill the alligators quick.

1. Use the m16 or shotgun, one shot from eaither to the head usually kills them.

2. If you shoot them in the open mouth you can kill them even with a pistol, one shot. And don't forget to let them have a few grenade snacks.

I was able to knife them to death without really getting hurt much.

I'm trying to learn how to grab as opposed to throwing the enemies to the ground and kncoking them out. I think it comes down to not moving when pressing O.

I'm also trying to kill birds i flush out fom bushes, but it's really hard. I can only hit them with the sniper rifle, one time i couldn't believe how far the bird was when i hit it. It seems near impossible for me to hit the birds with my pistol, shotgun, or m16, but i think they will be a good souce of food later in the game so i better learn.

Ok it's pretty simple really.

Just use a pistol/knife combo. Pressing O will make you grab. If you are moving toward the enemy you will grab him and smash him to the ground. If you press O and hold without and direction then the fun begins. You grab the guy put a knife to his neck and use him as a shield. You can drag him around with directional movements, enemies won't shoot much and if they do then the shield takes the hit. When another enemy gets withing arms reach press O hard and you'll slit your shield's neck, then quiclkly run to the next guy and grab him.

I can't figure out how to draw my pistol while using someone as a shield.

CQC is suprisingly simple once you adjust to it, yet great fun. God it's so cool owning guards with a knife. It's going to be so damn hard to resist going through the whole game owning guards with it.

I'm in awe of the presentation in this game, it literally sucks you in after a while. It's literally like playing with a piece of interactive art rather than a game. The graphics are very uniform (everything on screen blends and works very well with each other) and there's nothing visually jarring that stands out from that awesome look(like out of place looking pixel shaded water or something). It's all so well produced and works great together.

The PC version of MGS3 must be jaw droppingly gorgeous.

Yeah, sure it's just a demo disc... but why is this acceptable?

I guess you have a point, this doesn't seem any better from a technical point than posting magazine scans, but since no forum moderators have interfered so far it got carried away.

I'd say any talk about how to get the torrent, or burn it should be stopped, but discussions/impressions about the demo should be allowed, since the issue is out already and any of us could have bought it.

Indeed, while playing I was thinking "This is a piece of art, every aspect of it"... Everything blends so well together it's unbelievable... There's just one tiny "artificat" that stood out for me when Snake hit the ground with the parachute, the dust being blown off the ground and the lighting looked very "dithered", like a highly compressed video would look... I was actually wondering if that particular scene was infact a video or not, but I guess it's just the 16-bit color mode showing its limitations... But it's only a tiny detail in the grand scheme of things.

People should just read previous pages...

The game is hard; I can't get to Sokolov without alerting everyone... v_v

Someone prove me wrong, but to do a CQC -> Hold enemy as shield move and aim with your gun, you have to hold R1, Square and the Circle button at the same time? That's kinda hard to do with one hand...

And I don't think the game is any more difficult than the previous ones. It's just that you have to wait and find exploits through the guard's patrol route. Which I don't like cause I hate waiting. Good thing MGS lets you kill enemies without giving you a game over screen.

I've done it! I've rescued Sokolov... Or did I?

Unfortunately, all you see once you enter the room is the MGS3 logo, à la soviétique. The best way to do it is to go throught the roof. Once you are in the red ruins zone, go through the right way, following the fence until you are on the right of the building. You will see a ladder; climb it and wait until the alarm (if you've been discovered like me) goes completly off. Then, fall down the roof and enter the upper room... et voilà!

To do a CQC, only press the circle button once you are near the enemy. It's pretty much the same thing that you've done in MGS2, except this time, the possibilities are far numerous. Pushing the analog stick left while holding O will do one thing, pushing it the other way will do something else, etc.

If you play it through without screwing around and watching all cutscenes and dialogue, a good 30-40 minutes. I can see myself replaying it over and over though, catching food, playing with the CQC or making some challenges (like going through the demo without getting alerted)

About the CQC thing, I let go of the circle button and tried to aim out with my pistol, but then Snake would just let the guard loose. There must be something that I'm not doing correctly. Using guards as shields and shooting enemies down in The Getaway was my favorite move...I want to do it in MGS3 too dammit

No go here. So sad. Need the full DVD ISO version since I want to try out the other demos too.

Wow, what an awfully short demo. Took me probably 10-15 minutes of playtime to finish. When they said that I shouldn't engage enemy soldiers, I took it literally, but turns out it's just like MGS and MGS2.

Nice graphics and sound, but I don't like how the game changes camera angles so suddenly. Also, why does it take upwards of 10 seconds to load the codec scenes? In MGS and MGS2 it's more or less instantaneous.

And Snake sounds like a total noob.

ToyMachine228 said:
So in all, about how long is the MGS3 demo?
Short... or long, it depends how you do with. I've managed to finish it in less than 10 minutes, but the "right" way could take an hour. Here are the areas...

1. LANDING AREA; You need to grab your backpack that is stuck in a tree. Go under the fallen tree that is blocking the way up north, à la Twin Snakes (except that the Colonel won't tell you how to crall... ;oP). If you want, before passing under the tree, you can hunt two snakes (reticulated python) on your left; just climb the huge rock with mushroom on its top (you can grab those also).

2. CROCODILE AREA; Go north until you get to a mud river. Alot of crocodiles (indian gavial) to hunt, which is easier when you shoot them in the head. By the way, your backpack was filled with all the weapon from the game (or at least a bunch). Have fun, and watch out for the hornet's nest.

3. FIRST GUARDS AREA; There are 5 or 6 guards total, but 2 of them you might not encounter since this place forms a huge ring, and you will probably follow the left path. Be careful which camouflage you choose, and try not to move when a guard is nearby. Move the right analog stick to look around.

4. BRIDGE AREA; There are 5 or 6 guards IIRC, which 2 of them are on your side of the bridge. Shoot the hornet's nest (you can hear those if you listen carefuly) to scare the guards. Then, hide in the bushes and have fun with your sniper. Kill them all!

5. RED RUINS AREA; This is the final area, and the once that needs more exploration. It's filled with guards, possibly 7 or 8 of them. First, I followed the left way, but somehow there is always a guard that spots me when I try to go upstairs, inside the ruins. I've decided to follow the right way, all the way through, climbed up the ladder and finished the demo that way. Of course I've explored a little, but not as much as I wanted to (since the demo might reboot if you take too much time).

I am pretty sure this won't be the case with the final game.
