So Sony did not give Jahtzee (Zero Punctuation) a review copy of Ratchet & Clank because they don't like his style.

I recently saw Dunkey complain about this too. Angry Joe as well.
Regarding Angry Joe - his reviews can be really spoilery. Sony has very strict review guidelines for their single-player titles if you want a code beforehand, for obvious reasons. So, play ball or not. But nothing of value has really been lost, the channel has been going downhill for me for years. I really don't care about him ranting about the latest Marvel TV episode for 30 minutes.

For The Witcher 3?

That term/phrase was used well before that game was a thing. He may have just given it more exposure for the normies in the vidcast generation.

No, it was from a video on an earlier Witcher game. It was also not meant as a complimentary term in any way.

People are defending this. If you do not play as Sony wants it, you don't get a review code.

And while defending they are not shy in showing their absolute ignorance when it comes to gaming.

How far up their own ass are Sony nowadays. Holy shit.

Censoring Japanese games, not giving reviewers copies, because they don't like their style?

I am very happy, that I did not buy a PS5.

Who cares. Stop being so entitled.

The Escapist can afford to buy a game.

Yahtzee is satire at best and his comment is in really poor taste. Honestly wish I hadn't read it cause now when I watch his videos I'm going to picture him being pissy about not getting a R&C review code, lol.

People don't watch Yahtzee to learn about a game, we watch it to see him savage it and laugh.

No, you're showing your absolute ignorance to how review copies work. EVERY SINGLE company, be it games or movies, have rules people have to follow in order to get early access to review content. Movies have very specific rules for social media reactions, review times, spoilers, etc. So do games. If you don't play by the rules you don't get jack shit.

Since someone isn't getting it, let me reiterate this from the point of view of someone who has been working in gaming media for 20 years.

Giving review copies to *anyone* is not an obligation for *any* company. Companies can have whatever motivation they want for not granting anyone a free copy of *their* product. It's their prerogative, no matter if you're pewdiepie with 110 million subscribers or a beginner blogger that makes 110 views a month.

I'm actually rather surprised that this needs to be explained. 🤔

I worked 10 years as a reviewer. I still own debug systems of the PS2, XBox and several other systems. I have hundreds of beta games and still some that were never released.

This was never an issue. You only had an NDA about what information you could release and when, but never did you not get a copy, because they did not like your style. I probably know more about the business the you ever will.

This is new, but as long as the fanboys blindly are sucking up to their beloved companies they can do that.

I like his style a lot, but he is not a reviewer. He is making fun of games, no matter how good they are. He takes the tiniest imperfections and presents it in a way that paints the game in a negative light.

Of course they are free to not give him a copy, since he is not upholding any journalistic standard on his end. Imagine you are a dev or publisher and you give someone a free copy of your work so that person can make fun of your work and earn money with it.

I didnt expect him to get a copy from anyone tbh.

Again, I like his style and I watch him, but he can buy his own "review" copies and put it in his taxes. The people that open up iPhones to show you how unrepairable they are don't get review copies either.

I understand why companies may be interested on sending free copies to 'serious' 'profesional' gaming media or big streamers, but I don't see why game companies are supposed to send copies to this kind of people or to absolutely all gaming media or streamers. They're free to choose who gets them.

You're kidding right? This is how it's always worked. I remember having AD Vision telling me they wouldn't send us (IGN) review copies if we had a certain reviewer review them.

This is simply false. So here are two cases:

1: You're lying to support a false point and the "reviewer" (trite comedian) you're for some reason a fanboy of.
2: You've been lucky and never ran into a company that did not care to give you a copy for whatever reason (and whatever reason is valid. It's their product and no one's entitled to it).

Regardless of which it is, publishers declining to provide review copies to MANY media outlets for whatever reason (including style and overall tone of the publication) are by no means a new thing.

The only time I really condone this is when Bethesda was blacklisting Kotaku. That just made me feel great all around.

My stance on it is that obviously Sony doesn't owe people copies. But if people are denied copies specifically because of the content of their reviews, I personally would like to know about it. Then when I see reviews out, I can add that information to the rest of the info I have and determine how much I trust what I'm seeing. If companies are trying to pick reviewers, I want to know about it. If they're trying to tell people to specifically not talk about the entire 2nd half of TLoU2, I want to know about it.

But no one can know about any of this if anytime anyone speaks about it they're called entitled.

He called Rivet "Snatchet". :messenger_tears_of_joy:

His "reviews" are incredible hilarious.

I never decided to buy a game upon his reception so i couldn't care less if he gets free review copies on time for a test.

Nobody should take him to seriously and i think Sony should be above all of this.

It's not a matter of content. Sony quite obviously doesn't consider their "reviews" a review. That's what "tone" means.

Which is on point.

And if you want to hear a bunch of entitled babies whine that they didn't get free stuff, good for you, I guess?
