So, what's the best version of Metal Gear Solid?

I've been meaning to get into this series for well over 20 years, but it just never happened. I played a bit of a few games without ever really committing. I figured I'd just start from the beginning.

What's the best version of the original Metal Gear? PS1 emulator? Twin Snake on Game Cube? The collection that just came out?

I own a GC, Xbox One X, PS3, PS4, PS5, Switch, and a gaming PC, so what should I go for?

Twin Snake on Game Cube?
Lol no. I'd play that one maybe after you've played all the others, as a short of alternative version of the original game. It changes the tone and presentation way too much to be considered a substitute of the first game.

The only relevant version here is Duckstation

The latest version released for current gen consoles is emulated with the worst imaginable settings, still drops frames, still has missing (glitched) dialogue and is overall awful despite being updated just recently.

Emulate the original. Then if you want play TS on GC (emulated), because it's fun.

Or play the original on playstation, if you can and have a suitable screen.

The game is short even if you spend hours finding everything/listening to every codec convo.

Damn, I might replay it too, OP. xD

You won't actually play any of MGS games, right?

The original.

Even so, Twin Snakes is more in line with the rest of the series. The original is the odd one out. Twin Snakes is well worth playing.

In my opinion, the PSX version is the best, but the problem with old PSX games is that they use extremely low-poly models and low-resolution textures. If you emulate them at 4K, the graphics will look terrible because 4K exposes every imperfection. For example LOD transition will 10x times as noticeable.

So I recommend using retroarch emulator with PSX rearmed core at 480p with a CRT shader (preferably Sony Megatron shader set to TVL600 if you have very bright monitor with at least 600 nits, or koko-aio TV flickering shader if you have SDR screen). This combination masks low-poly models and other imperfections, making the 480p graphics appear much better to the human eyes than even 4K. Retroarch emulator is however not easy to setup. For example, enabling DualShock requires you to go into the input settings and choose DualShock. You then need to turn it on in the game using a combination of LB, RB and Select (if I'm not mistaken). I had to spend some time learing to use retroarch but was worth it, becasue this is definitely the best way to play old games (and not just PSX games). I have real PS2 / PS1 and CRT, but retroarch offers much better quality.

ps3

I looked it up... there's an ingame menu for adding "Saves" as well as changing the "controller port".

Not a bad workaround, but kinda of spoils the suprise.

I was legit in shock when I first encountered that boss fight on the PS1. I thought it was magic lol. I was 13 at the time, so understandable.

Will never understand the hate hard-on Twin Snakes gets. Is it the best Remake ever? No. Is it a decent re-imagining of the first game with great visuals and updated mechanics with improved voice overs (sorry but stereotype Mei-Ling was so bad Kojima cannonically corrected it)? Yes.

Definitely give Twin Snakes a play to see how an updated/modern re-take on MGS is.

The stupid HK action/Matrix shit alone makes Twin Snakes absolute shit.

I knew it was gonna suck when I saw Solid Snake back flipping to dodge a flying missile then literally kick it away.

I remember the shills back then said "But MGS was always unrealistic and silly lmao stop nitpicking"

MGS was always silly and yes, Kojima went too far sometimes ie - Liquid's arm, Solidus blocking machine gun bullets with katanas, the supernatural characters in MGS Snake Eater, etc. but this Twin Snakes shit was on another whole level of retarded.

Duckstation with hd texture pack.

Or the GOG version that was recently added. It's Metal Gear Solid Integral, the pc version. Also included VR missions.
List of differences to the PS1 version

It was just early, but not wrong.

Even MGS2 had more idiotic stuff.

And just play Death Stranding, you'll see... xD

MGS series has ALWAYS been weird, quirky, a bit tongue-in-cheek with a mix of over the topness, but it's these gatekeeping purists/haters that still like to pretend that Twin Snakes was suddenly the "weird" one of the group 🙄

the only valid criticism I see about Twin Snakes is how first person aiming breaks part of the game design and the game wasn't properly adjusted with it in mind.

the crazy cutscenes are just what MGS eventually became after MGS2. Raiden jumping from one Gekko to the next in MGS4, then flinging them around with his feet while doing breakdance moves, was multiple magnitudes more insane than anything happening in Twin Snakes.

Twin Snakes is a great time. The original is the recommendation, but don't sleep on Twin Snakes. If it's within your means to play it, then by all means do so. The cutscenes might be a dealbreaker for a lot of people, but, honestly, they're a big part of the draw. I'd rather have something different than a straight rehash with better graphics only. Actually one of the reasons I'm weary of Delta.

The PS1 is where I started, so I'm suspect to say, but I would go with that one. If you don't mind the outdated graphics. I think it's charming..

imo the graphics aren't the real issue with MGS1. it's the controls that aren't great. the game has very sluggish controls due to a pretty noticeable amount of input lag.
and that can throw you off and lead to annoying moments, for example when you try to grab an enemy from behind, if you're not fully used to it.

This should also be checked out but it is a PSP exclusive to this day, and is INFINITELY more immersive than Metal Gear 5 ever was....even if you don't get the "free-roam" and not many people rate it, but it is more than worthy of being a mainline entry, and should get a remaster...

Metal Gear Solid Twin snakes is the best version of the first game, the graphics for a start are light years ahead of the nodding heads of the PS1 game, voice acting is better than the PS-one game as well, and the first person part was present in MGS 2 so the fact that they included it here isn't a deal-breaker....and Konami has been dragging their heels for 20 years plus in giving MGS one the treatment that Metal Gear Solid Delta is getting...

Supposedly, Kojima saw a version that was basically a shot-for-shot recreation of the original and told the director to change it up. At the end of the day it was Kojima-approved.

PS1 version via duckstation.

Original graphics effects retained + can run in 4K or higher + working wide-screen hacks in the emulator + you can also find texture mods online.

Twin snakes is great. The only issue is the drab colours vs the original (also true of mgs2 imo).

Provided you have the hardware and time I would play the original via ps2 (or similar) on a crt and then enjoy twin snakes.

If you only want to play it once Twin Snakes holds up fine.

Yeah, now that you mention it, I remember that. I sort of got used to it half way. But it was all about the story at the time. You spend at least a third of the game on codec, listening to the conversations. But it was different back then. Having such a rich story was kind of a new thing, especially for non-RPGs.

So, PS1 emulated version it is with the texture pack and CRT filter.

I can't fucking believe those schmucks haven't made a proper port of one of the most legendary games of all time.
