Sonic Generations |OT| What Sonic can learn from Sonic

So... Let's talk about how awesome classic
Seaside Hill
is.
Man they really hit it out of the park with that stage! Easily my favorite stage in the game so far.

So I've beaten the game yesterday around 11pm and here's my 2 cents.

Overall I am pleased. It's a good game. There is a lot to like. The hub is intuitive and fun without being a clusterfuck nightmare like Adventures or 06. The levels are beautiful and well designed. There is so many paths in each of them that I know it'll take a good amount of time to explore them all. Doing so will allow me to collect all of those carefully positioned red coins.

Beating this game (as in, beating the final boss) is both easy as hell and quick (it's very short). it only took me 3 or 4 hours and I did some optional challenges that weren't required to progress further on. Fortunately, there are still many things to do like challenges, red coins, getting S-Rank or competing online for the best score / time.

The soundtrack is good for the most part. Some of the remix weren't as tight as I imagined they would be, but I'm okay with that. I think I would have preferred them to use the Colors tracks for Planet Wisp instead of those unappealing remixes, as I thought they were the weakest of all.

I have some bipolar feeling when I think of the controls in general. On one hand, it works beautifully in modern era Sonic. It's precise, no complain here. It's the same we've being used to after all these years, but tightened up. On the other hand, it feels like a downgrade compared to Colors. Where is my double jump ? Why can't I swim jump under water ? Why can I only jump on walls at certain specific places ?

For classic era Sonic, I think they fucked up one point. Curling fucks your speed big time. Either that or it completely stops you. Gaining momentum is much harder than old school games. THAT SAID, I am happy with the overall feel of it. It's certainly playable and save for this rant, controlling Sonic is easy (like it should be).

The levels in general are great, but some of the classic zones are just way too fucking long for their own good. They could have easily make 2 or even perhaps 3 acts out of them. Others are guilty of spamming gimmicks (HEY YOU PLANET WISP !). Seriously, they turned an exciting environment into the most tedious zone in the entire fucking game. Yes, Planet Wisp is from Colors. Yes, Colors has wisp power-ups. Yes, they were fun to use. But in Generations, it's like they fucking planted the same power-ups all over the fucking place just to make us remember they're part of the gameplay. I mean, for fuck's sake, how much is too much ? Granted, the rocket power-up from modern era isn't too annoying. They are seriously present, but they don't slow down the game that much. On classic era though, bad, bad design. Another thing is that Planet Wisp zone just does not live up to my expectation. Colors's Planet Wisp was much more competent and memorable.

Another complain is that it's way too easy to get an S rank on most levels. I've done some really bad runs that somehow still deserved nothing less than a S-rank. I also preferred the score system and the score screen from Colors but this isn't something that should be considered as a flaw, just a preference.

The story is once again the kind of stuff you expect from a Sonic game. It's incredibly insane and stupid. The dialogs are cringe worthy. The recorded cutscenes are butt ugly pixelated and low res. I doubt anyone digs the Sonic universe though so who the fuck really cares ? It just feels cheap compared to the effort SEGA did with Colors.

All in all, it's a great Sonic game and any fan of old or modern era Sonic should buy this shit. It's much better than all the disgusting waste of plastic we've been through last decade. I would rank SG slightly below SC. Colors is longer, feels more diversified, the music is overall better, the power-ups are convenient without being obligatory for the most part, the controls are more evolved, there are more levels. All of this can be argued both ways, but that's the way I feel right now.

So the Steam version doesn't unlock until 7PMish Central Time? I WANNA PLAY NOWWW (ノಠ益ಠ)ノ彡┻━┻

One last question that probably doesn't need to be asked since I could've found out myself but I shall still ask: Original Planet Wisp Act 1, Acts 2 and 3, and/or Game Land 4 music. Are they in?

I'm surprised how many people apparently bought the PC version without knowing the quality of the port.

I like to live dangerously.

Plus it's cheaper and I really feel the game would look far better at a higher framerate.

The GiantBomb Quick Look was... cautiously optimistic. :O I wonder if Ryan is doing a review - he's already done a third of the main story.

Got this game today and I've been having a ton of fun in just trying to speed run Green Hill and exploring Chemical Plant Zone.
Quick question though, how do I access the Casino Night mini-game? I downloaded it before I booted up the game but I can't find it anywhere, do I have to progress so far before I can play it?

And while I'm talking about the pre-order bonuses, I'm really disappointed in the dashboard theme it came with. I was expecting a nice picture of Green Hill Zone or something but instead it's just a white background with the logo at the top. But hey, at least Sega made up for that mistake by offering the best avatar costume:

The double jump in Colors did nothing to help the game's wonky-ass physics; I'm glad they got rid of it.

Looking at these videos, I really hope the PC version has better loading times.
Eh? Loading times are not an issue in the game AT ALL. It takes a very short amount of time to load and, once you're in a stage, there are no additional loading screens. It's not a problem at all.

Also, the loading times improve over what you see in the video when it is installed on 360. Regardless, it's not really an issue and nothing like, say, Sonic 06.

To be honest, I don't think people traditionally reviewing PC titles really care about this game at all. Even the console version isn't really receiving full coverage from some sites. What makes you think anyone really cares about reviewing the PC version? It's a very low key release.

I use the standard blue Sonic outfit that Sonic 4:Ep1 includes as an avatar award from time to time.

My only complaint is I can't use my glasses with it.

Oh, the QL's up? Nice. I have something to watch while I finish my lab report. :)

I like for him to do one [a review], but I kind of doubt they would since they never did one for Colours.

Because alot of people have purchased this and would like to know if it's a good port or not. That plus PC got no demo. They may or may not care about reviewing but the thing that worries me most is has Sega given them copies to review because as far as I know right now PC version is only digital right now boxed version later.

I am surprised the PC version hasn't gotten a demo yet. You think they would've put one out alongside the last demo for the console versions.

I'm pretty sure they did do a QL for Colors?
They did, but I was referring to the fact that they didn't do a review despite seeming to have somewhat favourable impressions of Colours during the Quick Look last year.

Like other people said earlier in the thread, I don't think any of them have enough favourable impressions towards Sonic as a whole to the point of doing a review for a newer title.

Also what is the point of the red curbs? I hate it when I'm playing modern sonic and I'm blazing through the level (the whole hook of sonic) and I run into those red curbs. It's as if sonic team said "looks like ur having too much fun, let's put this here to stop you. In a sense this game's concept is perfect in my situation. My first video game was sonic 1 and I hate eveyrthing about modern sonic. My little brother relates with modern sonic more. So I beat the classic levels and I pass him the controller so he can beat the moder levels. And no angel island zone? Wtf?

Can't have you just spamming the boost button all the time.

Hate the double jump, but I love the wall jump. Those panels you can jump from look really out of place.

So theres no review on the PC version yet
Kind of tempted to buy it...but I need to know if its a good port :/
At least my three favorite levels from the 3D games are in :D

Mmm...

Watching Ryan fight the boss was somewhat... er... painful. It's too bad they didn't show off some of the core levels and did some of the challenges instead... though the Doppelganger races in effect do show off the level, I suppose. Maybe Ryan might play a little more.

At least they did a QL for it, and I enjoyed it for the most part (opening with the rival battle was great). I enjoyed the Sonic Colours QL last year a bit more, though.

You could try jumping over them. I know I know a complex action

Holy shit it reads like it was reviewed by someone that's never played a game before. I mean I rarely call out reviewers cause it's well dumb but... HOLY SHIT THAT WAS BAD

The razzledazzle of Sonic Team’s tech may add visual flair, but it comes at the cost of your sense of empowerment, too often feeling like a game of pinball as you hold the analogue stick and hope for the best, occasionally tapping a button (and even these moments tend to come with prompts).

While the levels are strict and narrow, their hub is confusing in its openness. Each entrance is a miniature platformer in itself, comprising challenge gates that are too often hidden in awkward places. The few boss battles add to the burden, and suffer from poor camera placement and cruel mid-fight difficulty spikes.

FFFFFUUU!!!!

I pre-ordered the special edition from amazon Germany way back in September. Amazon was trying to use my old credit card for payment instead of my new one. I fixed the problem last night but they have yet to ship it. In fact, the delivery date is now the 14th. XP Does delivery date mean that's when they'll charge me and ship it out? That could free up some cash for me right now.

Edit: Estimated Delivery date is the 4th while delivery date says 14th-19th. Guess I'll wait a day to be sure.

It's Edge. They generally grade harder. I'm playing the PS3 version at the moment, and reading through the review, I get some of the issues they have with it regarding the framerate and some of the disorientation.

However, most of their complaints seem to have to do with the modern levels (at least, that's what I'm inferring), and difficulty spikes during boss battles (though I personally think the bosses are okay so far... I haven't really encountered any difficulty spikes). They don't seem to like the hub world, saying that the challenge gates are too hidden and that each entrance is a miniature platformer in itself. I kind of wish they had elaborated on these particular points in a lengthier review, because I would like to understand their reasoning behind them a little more.

Well, back in the genesis days, they put spikes on those for good measure.

EGM Review - 6.5/10

I'm actually a little amused by this one. The review text is interesting.

In 2D, various paths are clearly defined and easy to follow—though difficult to master. In 3D, it’s all too easy to make one wrong button press and plummet to your death over and over again.

Of the 18 acts—two for each stage plus four boss battles—the 2D acts are almost always easier to play through because they aren’t confusing. In 3D, things move too fast and there are too many ways to die. 3D levels aren’t harder; they’re just exponentially more frustrating, because one slip, and bam—Sonic falls to his doom. At least in 2D, players always can see where they’re headed.
In fact, Sonic Team didn’t actually create any new levels for Generations. Instead, every stage has been re-created from nine different Sonic titles, from the original to last year’s Sonic Colors... Both Sonics race through seemingly identical acts but from completely different perspectives. But the major paths are the same as in the originals, so grizzled fans of the franchise can play through some levels blindfolded.
Combine those mishaps with a very childish story—the cast of Yu-Gi-Oh! might as well be playing Sonic’s friends—and aging fans won’t feel like throwing a happy birthday party for their beloved hedgehog.
THE GOOD: Classic Sonic gameplay, online leaderboards
THE BAD: Poor camera, delayed controller response
THE UGLY: It’s as kid-friendly as Teletubbies

But it was a fantastic game. It was just a better version of OoT, so how could they go wrong? It probably should have been 8, but that's not too off.

I don't see the big deal. One off review and all of a sudden everyone is out to get Sonic again? I'm glad we have at least one harsh review. It should keep Sega on their toes. While this Sonic is of higher quality than past titles, I wouldn't want them to become complacent.

The fact is, at this point it's also true that almost no one has the slightest idea about how a good Sonic game should be so they throw judgements at random.

Okay, 95% of reviewers aren't Sonic fans and get facts wrong, fine, but getting them wrong inconsistently?

What? o.o I haven't noticed this at all. I mean sure some of the stuff is similar in essence but it feels like almost everything is reworked.

In the game journalism world that is true, but don't pretend like there hasn't been fantastic, well thought out ideas brought out from this community.

The delayed response is a legit complaint. I unlocked Sonic 1 and its really so much more responsive than the actual game.

But all in all Generations is likely the first Sonic I enjoy since SA2. Although I have not played Colors.

I haven't noticed it at all either--it's reworked. Chemical Plant, I know for sure, feels different from the original. It isn't the same map at all. The first part of the Generations Chemical Plant map is identical to the Sonic 2 Chemical Plant map, but as you go in, it deviates dramatically. Chemical Plant Act 1 in Sonic 2 does not have chemical water in it at all, for example, while Generations' version does because it's supposed to be similar to both Acts 1 and 2 in essence.

Just Push Start review - 4.5/5
