Sony confirms PS2 emulation coming to PS4

Awesome, I've wanted to replay Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance for years.

I don't see disc-based emulation happening.

PS3 emulation or bust Sony. Make it a $1000 PS4 console that can play all PS3,2,1 and I'll buy ASAP. Its a start I guess with PS2 BC. Hopefully the EE chip van be done.

The PS2 had such a massive library with so many great hidden gems and licensed games. It would be a shame to limit the emulation to digital-only games that Sony chooses to re-release.

If Konami would possibly be so kind, Silent Hill 2/3/4 could live on in a form that isn't shit! (Outside of PS2-usage. Or PC. Eh, you know what I mean.)

Now do the same for PS1 games, allowing the discs, and I have literally no reason to keep my PS3 anymore.

Except to replay Nier.

... I'm never getting rid of my PS3

I had the same realisation earlier today. Between PS3 -> PS4 HD remasters and PS2 emulation, my PS3 is now a Nier machine.

I actually think Sony might actually go for a emulator that accepts disks because they can't match what Microsoft is offering with last gen emulation. But then again, I also doubt they will offer that because they want you to buy digital versions.

With the HD Collections on PS3, I don't see KH games happening.

I expect this to be reserved for whatever games didn't get HD collections last gen or show up as PS2 Classics on PS3 yet.

I want my Ace Combat (at least 5 and Zero)

And I want these to work with them

I still have mine, and the Ghosts of Razgriz need to fly again.

You kids really are in for a treat, if this allows people to play PS2 games from ANY region, well let's just say that JP PSN has a few interesting titles.
By that I mean SNK and Neo Geo games, you know you want this swag mofo back in your life
latest

Maybe my PS3 memory card adapter will work
fat chance

Copy pasta the PS2 save data to a USB flash disk and slap it into your PS4.

If its not disc based then this isn't news, hooray I can buy more digital shit I already own for the fifth time on the store to play on another system. PS3 getting hacked open showed that PS2 emulation was possible, a little buggy but still very possible.

It seems like everyone involved would want to bring over any PS2 games that would sell a decent amount, especially considering all the talk about how "many ps4 owners didn't own a ps3". Sony would get a cut of the sales, the publisher would get new sales, etc...

At least, this is what I like to tell myself to give myself hope.

Now are they going to let me pop in my PS2 discs and play, or are they going to make me rebuy shit that I already own like the PS3?

Xbone levels of emulation aren't acceptable.

What's not acceptable about Xbox One's method of emulation? It allows for people to use the games they already own rather than be forced to buy them again. I would say that's the gold standard, myself. It even allows users to use 360 features and Xbox One features with the 360 games.

It would really fall flat if they didn't offer a disc-based solution coming on the heels of Microsoft's Xbox 360 BC implementation. I'd like to think they aren't dense enough to preclude it, but I'm not going to get my hopes up yet.

Trophies for Suikoden III and Suikoden V pls.

He is talking about the game performance.

They're recompiled binaries that you have to download. They're not actually playable off of the disc.

This is the BEST news. Really weird that they just kind of offhandedly confirmed it instead of a formal reveal at PSX or some other press event.

is that possible? :0

Technically it's possible, but if it happens, we should expect PSN PS2 classics to be fine-tuned for the emulator, rather than the emulator to be fine-tuned for discs, with potential compatibility conflicts, as happened with PS3 BC.

Realistically though, I don't think disc-based BC is going to happen, no matter how much MS paints Sony in a poor light by offering just that. One of the reasons Sony abandoned disc BC in the first place was because people were playing their old games instead of buying new ones.

Nice. Let's hope we can get disc based emulation as well.

This is what I need, my PS2 doesn't read PS1 games or CD-ROM PS2 games anymore, so disk emulation on PS4 would be a godsend.

If it isn't disk based, it'll be much cheaper for me to buy a used PS2 slim than rebuy all the games on PS4.
