Sony confirms PS2 emulation coming to PS4

He is talking about the game performance.

It very well could improve. Most games aside from Gears seem to work perfectly fine, and some even work better than the 360 counterpart (Fallout 3). The emulator just has to improve over updates, and I'm sure it will. I've played lots of Gears 3 and the performance even now is acceptable (although it's not up to what it was on 360 yet).

They're recompiled binaries that you have to download. They're not actually playable off of the disc.

But you don't need to buy them again. They don't even take up much memory (especially with how easy it is to get a good external hard drive now). The tech between the 360 and Xbox One is very different so engineering techniques like this had to be made to get it to work. It was either this way or probably no BC at all unless it was through a streaming service or remasters. There's even been hints that the original Xbox games might be playable on Xbox One soon enough (it's on a list but there are other priorities within that list apparently).

I own enough digital PS2 and PS1 games on the PS3 that, at the bare minimum, those transferring over will leave me happy (Which given Sony's track record with this stuff, I feel that is pretty much a guarantee). Disc based stuff would be amazing though.

PS3 emulation or bust Sony. Make it a $1000 PS4 console that can play all PS3,2,1 and I'll buy ASAP. Its a start I guess with PS2 BC. Hopefully the EE chip van be done.

Why would they do that? You can buy a used Ps3 for around $100 these days. Save yourself half a grand.

What's not acceptable about Xbox One's method of emulation? It allows for people to use the games they already own rather than be forced to buy them again. I would say that's the gold standard, myself. It even allows users to use 360 features and Xbox One features with the 360 games.

Yeah, as nice as it'd be. I imagine they want people to buy the digital versions rather than using discs they can get cheaper/they already own.

But if I'm wrong, I'd be very happy.
I'd gladly buy them again, but most of the games I would like to replay rarely get released as classics.
No Bouncer, Gundam Battle Assault, MMX collection, Dead Aim MK Shaoiling Monks, Tenkaichi 3... :(

What if they hooked in the Share Play technology to bring online multiplayer to PS1/PS2 games?

Believe there was a thread here earlier trying to test share play for local co-op in one if the star wars games don't know what the result of that was though.
Regardless it's great news really hoping for disc based emulation and ps1 games being added as well

Will wait to get excited until it comes out of the horses mouth.
It'd be great if it's true, but there are still too many questions.

Judging by the general responses to this, it would probably be easier to ask who doesn't have a stash of PS2 games just lying around. :P I certainly do not.

Emulation would be a nice "and it's available today!" announcement for PSX

Especially if it's part of a whole segment of fixing/addressing user requests for PS4 functionality

This is just crazy. For a while I was doubting they would actually do it. There are plenty of ps1/2 games I never played.

i have a ps3 for ps3 games... anyone thinking CELL is easily emulated or are waiting for CELL emulation... be prepared to be disappointed. PS3 emulation is hard as hell to do and doubtful it can even be done this generation.

Ps2 however... since my BC PS3 died... ive been sitting on a collection of unfinished PS2 games.

Gimme that PS2 disc based emu based sony!

This is better than XB1 BC IMO because people want to replay games that've faded from their memories (PS2 era) not games they just beat a couple years ago (PS3 era).

I eagerly await the larger (PSX?) announcement to see where we stand on the trophy situation.

I hope that this is disc based and if it is then the next question is can I transfer my PS2 saves from my PS3 to my PS4.

I don't think that it will be disc based.
They want to sell digital games and having improved graphics and trophy support is an other reason to ask for money.
But I think/hope that the classics we have bought on PS3/PSP/Vita will transfer to PS4 as well if available.

With this being said I'd love to replay the Onimusha series on PS4 =)

For games like Final Fantasy XII (which is all but confirmed to be getting a proper port), we probably won't see the ps2 version popping up on psn.
This is also a reason why I don't see them doing it for disc based ps2 games (although on a technical level I don't see it being all that difficult).

Although for games like Final Fantasy IX, which are already on psn, I would definitely love to see a emulated version of it in HD on PS4.

As for the FF7 HD port....

It's pretty weird that they announced and released those Star Wars games before a proper PS2 emulation announcement.
Now this confirmation without any fanfare as well.

I guess Sony doesn't treat it as a big deal, and I could understand that.

Gotta disagree with you there, mate. I haven't played any of the games on the xbox360 so look forward to that.

It is better for the simple reason of PS2 having more and better games than either 360 or PS3. Also good number of PS3/360 games has already been remastered for current gen.
