Sony confirms PS2 emulation coming to PS4

I think i used PS2 games maybe twice in the 8 years of owning a PS3. So can't see myself playing any of them on ps4. Good stuff though I guess

I guess this is one way to play SOCOM again assuming they actually listened to the fans and the petitions. Then again, they might not just to make the pain that much worse.

Gotta disagree with you there, mate. I haven't played any of the games on the xbox360 so look forward to that.

Well of course for console buyers like you that missed the previous gen, PS3-era BC could be preferential. I should've specified that I was referring to mutually-exclusive customers that have (and will) play with only XB or PS (since most people only have 1 console). So all things being equal, a longtime console player (of either XB or PS) would likely prefer PS2-era BC over PS3-era, since they've just recently experienced the PS3-era.

It is better for the simple reason of PS2 having more and better games than either 360 or PS3. Also good number of PS3/360 games has already been remastered for current gen.

Another solid point. Most exclusives from PS360-era have been remastered.

The servers are down anyway so they would be limited to single player and LAN if they are backwards compatible.

Competition is good because Microsoft forced Sonys hand otherwise would of done fuck all.

There are documents indicating PS2 emulation dated back to 2013. I think Sony have been working on this for a little while. It was bound to be coming regardless of MS actions.

Is this last gen emulation? No. It's a continuation of something from last gen that people have expected to be added eventually

Both are comparable because they're both emulation and expand the libraries of the consoles, but trying to compare them is a bit silly

"Whoa Nintendo's releasing Red, Blue, and Yellow on 3DS VC? Microsoft must've forced their hand"

You mean you don't?

I think it's been too short of time between E3 and the release of this emulator to be a reaction. A reaction from Sony would be to get PS3 games working, but I don't think that's possible (and neither does Sony, I believe).

The real test for this emulator will be how the games are available. There might just be a PS2 classics store where people will have to buy them again, or it could do a disc check.

Sony only shut those servers off a few years ago. I doubt they were costing them that much if they let them up for 10+ years while they were pulling down other games left and right over those years.

Because this

And its bullshit. This emulator has probably been in the works for quite a while.

Eurogamer did the speculation article last year and since then we've been getting hints PS2 emulation has been coming for months. Since the Star Wars games released today and Digital Foundry found out they were indeed running on an emulator that's when this firestorm started.

There is no way they got a ps2 emulator working in a couple months then you add the trophy tech to the emulator ands it's really improbable.

This will push me into buying a PS4 if it works from disc. If not, I'll pass.

I gotta ask. Why would PS2 emulation push you to buy a PS4 to play PS2 games? Wouldn't it make more sense to just buy a PS2?

BC is a nice perk to any console, but it shouldn't be the key buying factor. Right?

I'm just happy that we're getting emulation at all. People are taking it way too far with requests for disc based emulation and memory card readers. Can't we just be happy that we'll be able to play these games on PS4 at all?

Yeah, it hasn't been that long, plus that it can upscale. Emulation that wasn't just plain emulation, but that could upscale the games too (with trophy support), which I don't think many expected, was rumored a while back.

The upgrade in quality of those PS2 Star Wars games is outstanding. Hopefully other games see similar success.

I've noticed this too, after seeing the pictures in the Digital Foundry article. I can think of several PS2 games in my collection that would benefit from similar enhancements.

its cool as fuck and might push some people over the edge to get one

i myself have a BC PS3 that is loud as fuck now, but i really like the unlimited save data space and wireless controllers.

i would buy a ps4 and upgrade from my BC PS3 asap if it was disc based.

Little did they know Secret Agent Phil Harrison was relaying all the inside intel back to Sony HQ.

It's killing two birds with one stone. I need a new PS2, and the PS4 library is extremely lacking for me right now, though there are games I'd like to play. If I can easily play PS2 games, while having access to the PS4 games I'd like to play, it would be nice.
