Sony: "over a million" PS4 preorders to date

That number is going to roll back quite a bit after today's awful showing and dedicated server news out of MS camp.

1 Million is a lot, and I don't see why people are complaining about it not being a lot O_o
I'm picking one up on launch day, as it looks like a great console and has a decent line up of games.
I just hope they can meet their demands.

1M sounds like a lot. I'm not sure I'll pre-order yet, but I know I'll get a PS4 later on.

Over a million pre-orders is a remarkable feat, far beyond the PS3's launch. And lets not forget Walmart/Target haven't started taking pre-orders yet and it's only been sold out in Amazon and Gamestop. My prediction, PS4 would have sold 2-5million units by Jan 2014.

Love the people trying to negatively spin these numbers. Sorry guys, sometimes you really can't just spin a narrative more to your liking without sounding completely ridiculous.

Preordering an expensive piece of hardware seems crazy to me. I plan on picking up a PS4 at some point this year, but I'd like to see them reviewed and out in the wild for awhile before I take the plunge.
Preordered hardware doesn't come with warranties now?

Good lord. People thinking sales will decrease because ps4 is launching 3 weeks later than they hoped. This place is turning into gamefaqs 2.0

Here's a scoop for you all. Xbox and ps4 will be sold out through Christmas regardless if how many consoles they produce. That's just how it will work out.

I remember the talk about how Wii U will be sold out throughout the holiday season, anything they made, they would sell because it would be so popular and thats how things work. Thats not how things worked.

lol...Wii U's were all over store shelves after the initial artificial run of sell-outs was completed.

doesn't sound very impressive, ive been told microsofts launch allocation has sold out entirely. perhaps their pre-orders have backtracked once microsoft reversed their policies and became humble?

To those that think that number is low, how is it supposed to improve when one cannot preorder the system anymore? lol I am pretty sure Gamestop and Best Buy stopped preorders and Amazon even turned off the none launch day sku. Sounds like preorders were turned off and they are going to have quite a few PS4's available for those that show up at launch, or rather 3 days before launch with a tent outside. If they can ship and sell 1.5-2 million units in a weeks time that would be pretty huge I would think, no?

It is a astronomical number consider 3 factors:

1. Japan is launch is still unknown, likely launching in 2014
2. Marketing has not kicked in at all, both PS4 and X1 are barely visible to the mainstream consumer
3. We are still 3 months away from launch

They key is not just to make a appealing product, its also to be able to supply it. I am sure the PS2 could have done 3 million pre orders if they had enough stock, similar to the original Wii.

I remember the talk about how Wii U will be sold out throughout the holiday season, anything they made, they would sell because it would be so popular and thats how things work. Thats not how things worked.

That was brought up by fans, it was more to do with what they wanted to happen, rather than what would happen. Remember when many people here brought up how confusing the product it self was? How the mainstream would not know the difference between a Wii U and a Wii? Remember when people brought up that the Wii craze was over and those people are now on smartphones and tablets? All that was ignored and brushed aside, "But Mario is launching, it will do gangbuster sales!"

There was also talk about how third parties would flock to the Wii U, how the rising costs in game development would make everyone want to make games for the Wii U, how both current and next gen games would scale and that the Wii U would have a massive third party library of games. Basically the WUST thread made people believe many things that did not turn out to be true.

Do not mistake for reasonable predictions with wishful thinking

Fortunately that initial number bodes well for Sony's ability to produce and manufacture PS4's. It sounds like Sony should be able to keep a steady stream if be it a small number of PS4 shipping to all regions.

I can't believe people don't that is impressive. Afterall, there's a reason Sony would mention that compared to not doing so in the past.

I know we're used to big numbers and AAA games requiring a shitload of zeroes at launch, but 1 million preorders already is pretty damn good for a console launch, especially today. Consoles don't automatically get up to the tens of millions in a day, especially in preorders instead of usual sales. Consoles launches are for the hardcore market and the rest will follow afterwards.

Not saying this in comparison to X1 or anything or to praise Sony, but we have to be realistic with the numbers whether you want them to be higher or if you're an X1 fan thinking this isn't impressive. It's pretty damn impressive.

It launches in three months, preorders are selling out, and there will likely be many more allocated between now and November. Also, shelves if they can manage it.

I think it's going to be a pretty big holiday.

>1 million pre-orders not impressive?

Such screwed perspectives. If that isn't impressive then the Xbone's numbers (whatever they may be) will make you absolutely gag.

Some of you sound like these game publishers with their unrealistic expectations of games.

"ONLY 1 million..."

People don't really understand the numbers. I don't even think you can preorder it in Japan yet which makes the number even more impressive.

500k in both NA/PAL 2 or more months from launch is ridiculous.

Preorders are hype sales, the majority of people walks in and buys period.

That said, given the initial almost nonexistant offering, that price must be quite appetizing to a lot of people.

I would imagine a lot of those preorders were impulse buys from consumers. I for one was ready to jump ship but with the 180s and all I think Microsoft has picked up some momentum in regards to preorders. And people saying the race is already over remember this gen will last a minimum of 6 years prices/games will change

They were stopping preorders at 1 million to have some supply left for shelves? So what will the initial shipment be? Sure not the 16M some were dreaming of - right?

Dunno what the preorder numbers for other consoles were, but compared to GAF hype this is indeed abysimal.

That rumor was stated for the first year, if I recall. Still, it sounds insane.

Who on earth thought they were going to ship/sell 16m consoles this holiday season?

That is utter insanity

Edit: If it's for the first year it makes sense but still seems a little exaggerated

1 million preorders for a console is low? On what world are you guys living? That's an awesome number and it will only get higher.

maybe the launch is mid november instead of in october because they want to produce more units?

That seems like a very sound theory. The last weeks of production are always significantly higher than the first few weeks as the parts supplies are ironed out. And don't forget that if they do ship them via sea shipment to the US we are talking 6 weeks from China.

2-3 more weeks means you can have a lot more units available for launch and more of them can ship via Sea shipping (saving Sony a lot of money vs Air shipments).

Sounds like the numbers GAF had are off.

It was already reported that bone had doubled 360 preorders over a month ago.

No way PS4 is even 3:1 if that's true. I suspect unless PS4 has closer to 1.5 mil that's it's less than 2:1 by now with XBone over 500k.

What?

Pre-order numbers for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One are "two times" the amount Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 saw in their respective launch periods, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has said. Guillemot mentioned the statistic during Ubisoft's Fiscal Year 2013-14 Q1 Sales Earnings call earlier this afternoon.

1m preorders is a lot.

More importantly is Sony announcing that figure 3 months out. Maybe now they'll start to ramp up marketing/PR activities. Using that figure as a starting point to build awareness and the 'must have' nature of PS4. Both as a way to build even more demand, but also to keep people from preordering Xbox one.

I love Jacks face.

The preorder game is pretty much done at this point. They both seem to have some remaining 2013 allocations in EU (MS more so than Sony) but that won't last much longer.

The focus now will shift to actually executing on the launch and not screwing things up.

This was definitely a pointed 'everyone's choosing us' statement. A lot of people do buy what they think everyone else is going for...

And notably, this nugget is in many mainstream headlines. It's on the front page of sky news right now for example.
