Sony: "over a million" PS4 preorders to date

I think Dreamcast presold like 300-500k in NA alone. Sega really liked bandying about their figures. Think it sold through 1 million units in NA alone in like 2 months.

got an email from GAME informing me of the release date and saying

At this stage we don't know how much stock of the PS4 console will be available at launch, but as a deposit customer you are in the priority queue

I preordered in March. I realise it is likely a generic email, but you'd have thought they'd be a bit more confident about preorder stock and would have been in touch with Sony throughout.

The preorder game is pretty much done at this point. They both seem to have some remaining 2013 allocations in EU (MS more so than Sony) but that won't last much longer.

The focus now will shift to actually executing on the launch and not screwing things up.

there are preorders (most likely done like you say), but there is also day one stock which apparently Sony are trying to manage too, and also potential Xbox one customers. So those last two segments are still something Sony would be aiming at.

Don't expect anything good when you use GAME.

they get shat on a lot here, but they're the largest specialist retailer in the UK and Sony (and MS) need them for a successful launch.

(plus I got bonus trade in towards a PS4 making it a no-brainer)

They get shat on because they're a shit retailer. I went into a GAME yesterday and they had Tales of Xillia on the shelf for £44.99 brand new and £34.99 pre-owned. I got Xillia for £26.75 from Amazon brand new on release day.

It'll be a good day when they disappear from the highstreet.

i don't understand the hate either. Preordered with them and been able to pay towards the PS4 using a game card.
Traded in some games and 3DS XL and is all paid for.

they can sometimes charge more than supermarkets for games but for a launch they have been really good with me. Even for PS2 launch and xbox360 they were good to me.

A guy at Sony told us

PS4 > PS2

PS4 > 3 Xbone

Sony will start strong because Microsoft has done a fantastic job in selling the PS4 to the early adopters. It remains to be seen if that trend is sustained long-term:

-The PS2 was launched with great success in Oct/Nov 2000 (NA/EU). The PS2 was able to sustain sales momentum because gamers couldn't buy GTA III,GT3,FFX,MGS 2,RE CV,DMC,Onimusha,J&D,SH 2 on their PS1 in 2001.

-The PS2 dominated Japan while the PS4 will be completely irrelevant during the first couple of years. If FFXV fails, it's over. Worst case scenario: PS3 outsells (PS4+Wii U+Xbone) in Japan. It would be hilarious and tragic.

-Kinect-less Xbone SKU would complicate things for PS4 in NA/UK.

PS4 will win the next generation but you cannot guarantee 100 million units EOL.

That said, Sony will probably sell between 5 and 6 Million PS4 in FY13. Game will miss P&L forecasts, but you can justify the risk given the current situation.

Shipments will remain stable because PS4 is a 2014 event in the vast majority of the world. For example, SCEE is responsible for the distribution and sales of PlayStation in 109 territories.

Sony sold 3.5 Million PS3 in FY06 (PS3 production shipments reached 5.5 million)

PS4 is already affordable and most eople pre order anything they want to buy these days. So this is actually pretty much what PS4 will sell in its whole lifecycle. Sony is doomed.

Bigger than PS2? Thread worthy?

Are pre-orders really 3:1 in favour of PS4 relative to XBO?

If Sony is bragging about this I guess it's good, I have no idea. Having been neck deep in GAF these past few months I guess I was expecting higher numbers, the hype has been through the roof.

I don't have numbers but I wouldn't be surprised if it's more than this on a WW level. Not with the amount of great games coming. MSFT may have bought some exclusives but Sony got a ton of their own even if most are indies. That (the word indies) doesn't discredit potential great games like Starbound, Shadow of the Beast, The Witness, Rime, or Transistor (just to name a few).

Is that even surprising? Here in the UK I don't know a single person getting a XB1, and the majority of my friends are 360 owners.
The biggest reason why seems to be £349 over £429.

UK guy here too, got a few friends who were mostly 360 players this gen and have pre ordered PS4.

Even with knowing about FREE FIFA?

It's gonna take a little time to see what effect the Fifa thing will end up having on preorders. I don't see it causing people to cancel PS4 preorders, so the question really comes down to whether it'll grab a bunch of on-the-fence folks and get them to order the Bone.

thread worthy?

Not trolling:
PS3 owner here, buying a PS4,...

Ummm.... only 1 million?
The PS3 sold 75 million with stiff competition from MS and Nintendo, the PS2 sold 150 million.

The gaming industry is if anything bigger than ever and Sony arguably started STRONG out of the gate on this launch which should indicate a lot of pre-orders.
1 million is 1 in 75 existing customers (give or take 5) not convinced enough to buy the new console at launch?

I'm genuinely surprised it's not like 5 million, when you consider just how many gamers there are around the world, especially since the console is fairly cheap this time too. 1 million? Big deal! Man that's surprisingly low :/

I think the big thing is that there hasn't been any marketing yet. There's been some mainstream news exposure, but not enough so that people really know what's going on. I figure preorders for both consoles should pick up in the next few months (especially Xbox One) once the marketing blitz starts.

It does sound small, but it must be relatively good for Sony to specifically mention it in their conference?

5 Milion ? Are you serious?

5 Milion ? Are you serious?

Yes I'm absoloutely serious. Gaming as a hobby has gotten much older, as has the gamers. I'm 35 and the only reason I'm not preordering one is I'm a stubborn asshole, who wants to confirm the console is quiet and I have a backlog.

Considering gamers are up in their 50's and more for age and it's launching in 31 countries, we seriously can't russle up 5 million people with an interest in it on day one?
I'd love to know the numbers for PS2, Xbox 360 and so on.

Love the people trying to negatively spin these numbers. Sorry guys, sometimes you really can't just spin a narrative more to your liking without sounding completely ridiculous.
I look forward to seeing people spin sales of whichever system outsells the other this holiday.

PREorders, that is to say...they will be a fraction of the total at the end of 2013 (counting xmas especially)

Very solid numbers so far. I am sure Sony is waiting for reports on how production is going in September and if things going well allow more pre-orders. We also don't know how many units retail is holding to sell after pre-order specifically for black Friday to help get people in stores that day.
