Sony says no to PS Vita price cut

Not skipping it, waiting for price drop on it

$40 for a 1 week shoot-fest isn't that appealing to me
I know the HVT is cool thing, but no Zipper = no more content regarding HVT being added, or maybe I missed news on this and someone else taking over

That is what is one of the main points of a handheld game, replay-ability
Get in get some shit done, repeat ad nauseum
Most games on the VITA don't feel like that, or in a sense your "Money's Worth"

The daily challenges are randomly generated so you have something new to play every day. Also it took me many hours to platinum it, was well worth the $40 purchase.

Perhaps if you played Vita games you'd get your money's worth. :p

Here, apparently, is the list of vita games at E3:

1.Assassin's Creed III: Liberation
2.Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified
3.FIFA Soccer 13
4.Foosball 2012
5.Gravity Rush

7.Jet Set Radio
8.LEGO Batman 2: DC Super Heroes
9.LEGO The Lord of the Rings
10.LittleBigPlanet
11.Madden NFL 13

22.Sound Shapes
23.Spy Hunter
24.Street Fighter X Tekken
25.When Vikings Attack
26.Zone of the Enders HD Collection

Doesn't look like much of anything we didn't already know about. I want a vita for gravity rush, and was waiting to see what else they had to show me.....but this list does not interest me much. Maybe I'd care more if I didn't own a PS3 and have access to 40% of these games already :(

Hmm... I do have a Best Buy coupon that gives me Buy 2 Get 1 Free New Games priced < $39.99

Grabbing Gravity, might pick up Unit 13 then, what to get as the freebee, choices choices

If they released some games I find interesting, I would.

Even all the titles released so far aren't these crazy amazing experiences in the palm of your hand
Most of the games so far released are PS3 releases, that pad up the numbers
Out of the total amount of titles released so far 10 are new IP's that aren't spin-offs/sequels/down ports
3-5 of them are JP exclusive at the moment, haven't made it to the overseas markets yet

So far we in NA have Unit 13, Army Corps of Hell, Escape Plan, Little Deviants, Welcome Park, and Gravity Rush/Daze (Next Week!) as new IP's only for VITA
Everything else can be found on PS3/PSN/Competitors

So you purchased the vita not anticipating any spin-offs, ports, sequels, or cross platform titles?

I would like to think people are joking now.

Take for instance wipeout. Wipeout 2048 is for the vita . Sure it can be played in the PS3 but outside of a desire to play alongside vita gamers why in earth would you, when HD/Fury is available for the PS3.

It is either your a fan of existing franchises or your not but complaining about 10 brand new IP for a console that has been out less than 6 months in western regions is simply ridiculous.

I'll never pay $250 and have to pay for memory sticks. That is insanity to me

Hahaha seriously. Right now 225 Euro at Amazon.de for PS Vita with an incredible 5 Inch AMOLED screen, Quadcore CPU and Quadcore GPU. And 8 GB memory card and 15 Euro discount on choosen titles. Try to get a smart phone with these specs for this price - it would cost at least twice this price.

With upcoming titles like Assassin's Creed: Liberation, Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassifed, Gravity Daze, LittleBigPlanet and LittleBigPlanet Karting, FIFA 13, Madden NFL 13, Street Fighter X Tekken, we will have some great games this year. And there are even more planned, Sony says there are 60 (!) new titles coming out this year, and there are rumors about games like Ghost Recon, Medal of Honor and Killzone.

And there are already really good games like Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Wipeout 2048, Rayman Origins, FIFA and more out there. PS Vita will be fine

The PSP has sold 70 million units. It has not reached 20 million LTD in Japan yet. I doubt it is the most popular on Japan. It is probably more relevant in Japan but it is obvious the bulk of the sales came from another region.

Those statements are usually formed by a combination of looking at hardware and software sales. Software continued to sell at a healthy rate for the PSP in Japan even discounting Monster Hunter while software sales completely collapses everywhere else. Also it's wise not to forget the piracy element, one of the bigger elephants in the room regarding PSP sales. Hell, that applies almost as much to the DS thinking about it.

Nevertheless, all things considered, the PSP was a solid attempt at carving a niche in the handheld market. That the Vita is currently doing significantly worse than the PSP EVER did is a major cause for concern.

Of course they are not going to talk about a price cut, until they do it, which will be this holiday season at the earliest. Right now they are making great profit margins on low volume, they will then switch to low margins on high volume. They already projected 10m sales, they have a plan.

I checked my gifs. I don't have an appropriate one. So I chose this instead:

pDhgTv.gif

Well fuck Vita then. To be fair I probably wouldn't have been able to justify two handhelds anyway but it's nice they have taken the decision away from me. I can't really see a follow up happening either, bar some sort of miracle turnaround for Sony.

All those games I would love to play on the Vita. but not at $250+$20 memory card & at $40 each. Their pricing scheme is out of wack.

Bolded are the games I'm definitely buying. Pretty happy with the upcoming year's lineup.

So you purchased the vita not anticipating any spin-offs, ports, sequels, or cross platform titles?

Spin-Offs - Absolutely, Cross Platform - Yep, but really was hoping for new IP's that were catered to the VITA and only VITA

It is either your a fan of existing franchises or your not but complaining about 10 brand new IP for a console that has been out less than 6 months in western regions is simply ridiculous.

Only 6 are in the US, 4 are still in JP and are in limbo to come here

They don't need a price drop, they need games! $250 is perfectly reasonable as far as I'm concerned. It's a tad on the high side, but if I had more than Super Stardust Delta to play, I'd be much more satisfied with my nice device. As it is, I mostly use it for Skype.

I was toying with the idea of getting a Vita if Sony had something good to show this E3, but man.. that list. Out of the seven Vita games that interest me (Sly, MGS HD, Lego LOTR, NFS: MW, PSASBR, Soul Sacrifice and Uncharted: GA), five are available on PS3, and I'm not gonna pony up $250 just to play Uncharted and SS :|

But this is honestly where they fucked up. The Vita's design is honestly cumbersome for a portability standpoint, it should have had basically the same form factor as the PSP Go (perhaps just a smidgen larger) and it should have two skus. A cheap (so under $199) barebones gaming handheld that takes out most of the excessive stuff (3G, GPS, etc) and another with all the bells and whistles in the form of a phone, subsidized through a contract.

Yes if you compare it to a phone the specs are great and you're getting good value. The problem is it's not a phone. And not just on the it doesn't do calls thing, it doesn't have the same usability that a device with Android has, obviously not even close.

NFS:MW isn't even on that list. It isn't a complete list of all upcoming Vita games, it's just the games that will be shown in some form by Sony at E3.

Earth Defense Force 3, Sine Mora, NFS:MW, etc. aren't on there.

Games I'm getting. That's not including EDF3. I'm pleased with the Vita lineup. Sony shouldn't be ashamed of it. I'll probably grab Most Wanted over the console version too.

2. Call of Duty: Black Ops Declassified < Wait & See Approch
5. Gravity Rush < Day 1
15. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale < Only if new characters/stages/content
21. Soul Sacrifice < Day 1

These look good to me

Everything else will be playable on my PS3, and I game 75% on my PS3

- No price cut
- No new game announcements
- No gameplay trailers of big 3rd party game, 30 seconds montage
- No screenshots, just a name of another big 3rd party game
- No mention of yet another big 3rd party game, presumed to only exist in Levine's head at this point
- No new games from 1st party announced
- No new footage of previous announced 1st party games
- No continued support on released games, including wanted features like Uncharted multiplayer
- No PS1 games until "Summer". Goal has been moved from "soon after launch"
- No PS2, HD Classics, or PSN games playable on it
- No big first Party developers working on it, including their 2 best (ND, SSM)
- No major apps released or announced. Apps that should have been there on launch are coming "soon"
- No PS Suite (Now PS Mobile) games
- No PS+ for Vita
- No comics or books

Yep, I'm convinced. Buying a Vita tomorrow.

The ones bolded I'm definitely buying, the ones underlined are a maybe (why would people care about HD graphics on a lego game? it seems to be best suited on a handheld) and the ones with the arrow I haven't seen a single screen or video of it so I can't judge.

I guess the Vita is a great handheld for me.

Yet still sold 128mb memory sticks for $100 and 32mb for like $60

Those memory sticks weren't only for the PSP though and third parties made them too. I took the memory card out of my digital camera at the time and put it in my PSP.

The PSP has sold 70 million units. It has not reached 20 million LTD in Japan yet. I doubt it is the most popular on Japan. It is probably more relevant in Japan but it is obvious the bulk of the sales came from another region.

Look at software charts then come back and tell me where the PSP was the most popular.

Actually those prices I gave were from Sandisk, not Sony. I remember buying a 128mb stick (or was it 256? could be one or the other) at $99 lol

I was ready to buy a Vita before I saw Sony's press conference and realized they're not interested in releasing any Vita games or making the system a success. Of course they're not going to drop the price.

Getting these for definite, this year seems alright, what really worries me if there will be solid dev support for next year and beyond and I'm really doubtful. I don't give a shit about a portable killzone or god of war, sony needs to get this thing to light up the japanese charts and get some solid dev support.

They weren't proprietary nor required for games to boot and could be had for pretty cheap. Again, I pulled mine out of my camera.

I don't think a price cut is necessary if they make better games for it. Gaming is an expensive hobby people. If you want a cheaper hobby try running or something.

Not everyone had a Sony camera and SD cards were cheaper and more available to the public since more tech used it. Just because you could pull it out of your camera, doesn't mean everyone could. They were required if you wanted to actually pass a game. Sure you could always put it in sleep mode but the PSP's battery life was pretty bad, so if it dies, you're out of luck. No sane man buys a console without it having internal memory or a external memory.

The Vita is a template for everything wrong with Sony. You can't just throw out powerful hardware and let it languish in the market. Nintendo learned the hard way that a $250 handheld in this new competitive landscape doesn't work. It's not like when the PSP launched and there were no multi-touch smartphones. Sony priced themselves out of the market, which has lead to a dearth of 3rd party games, which will lead to even worse sales in the future. They're only chance is the drop the price, timed with great software. Considering their current financial situation, I don't think they can afford it and the software just isn't there. Sorry, but console spinoffs aren't going to move units as much as people think they are.

I'm a bit confused as to why you'd compare a dedicated gaming device to a smartphone? That you know...can make phone calls?

Would a better example be a tablet? how much would a tablet go with those specs?

Why do the specs matter? We've been gaming for some 30 years now and time and time again it's never the best specs that get the best sales... in the scope of what is important to the consumer, the specs of the system don't matter at all as long as they're "good enough" to play the games the consume wants to play.

I don't know. Are there any 5" tablets out there? 7" Kindle Fire can be had for about $150?

Would two inches of screen space really bump up the price that much?

Specs matter to a lot of people, look at the Master Race: PC Gamers. Different companies are trying to grab different types of people, Nintendo is obviously going more for the casual gamers and the nostalgia gamers who love mario and zelda while Sony is going for the more hardcore side, while MS is now trying to grab both. Most hardcore gamers want eye candy graphics and they can't get it if the specs are crap.

No games, no pricecut, no sales.

Pretty much.

At this point it's pretty clear Sony's not concerned about the current performance of the Vita. They didn't make it the focal point of their presser, they announced a dearth of new games for it, and don't care about a price drop. All signs point to Sony not giving a fuck about propping up the Vita to a higher plane of sales.

I dunno. They (hilariously) predicted 10 million Vitas shipped this year, you have to figure something is causing Sony these delusions that everything is fine and good.

Price cut wouldn't do much without software to back it up, I know they have games coming but nothing that will keep hardware moving.

Maybe by Spring of 2013 we will get a PSvita bundle with some games + 4gig memory card for $200. I could get behind that.
