Sony to be conservative with its multiplatform releases in order to protect the value of the PS5 console

Sony has been porting its first-party games to PC for some time. However, unlike Xbox, which releases PC versions day-and-date with console, Sony's non-live service games, like God of War Ragnarok and Spider-Man 2, have typically arrived at least a year after their PS5 versions.

In the past, Sony has indicated that it would like to be more aggressive with its PC ports. However, speaking during a Sony business segment meeting on Friday, Hulst indicated that it would continue to be conservative with its multiplatform releases in order to protect the value of the PS5 console.

Asked about the industry trend of companies moving towards multiplatform gaming, and how Sony will protect the value of PlayStation consoles, Hulst said: "You're quite right that we're continuously exploring new ways for players to interact with their franchises.

"It's important to realize that we're really thoughtful about bringing our franchises off console to reach new audiences and that we're taking a very measured, very deliberate approach in doing that. Particularly on the single-player side, our tentpole titles, they're such a differentiator."

Sony exclusive has to remain exclusive or at a very least port some exclusivss to pc after a year or more, but not same launch date. This is also as respect to PS fans. Same with xbox and nintendo, they all have to have exclusives for higher quality and good selling point.

I believe it's the fifth time this year i hear the absolute same thing about the same subject...

And it does make sense, playstation as a brand is the most valuable in video game market ever - even Nintendo does not have a brand so recognizable that can be used in different services related to entertainment without devaluating the brand itself.

Too many threads already about 1 event

This is an obvious decision, especially considering that these games aren't selling enough to really justify moving them off platform.

Of course, Sony actually has to start making great single player games again before this even matters. That's the bigger issue.

It's a hard decision for sure.. more money or hold onto player base? I think it's the right choice for them to hold on to player base but it's the worst choice for gamers.

Yeah this was always the end game. PC will always be the best place to play console games when they are old and the initial release hype has died out. It's a fair trade off without devaluing the core console market.

And tbh I don't see why this isnt a good model for most games with mp components.

You do realize that Mario and Pokémon as brands are so recognizable even beyond entertainment? Think theme parks, and merchandise everywhere. That's a level of global recognition PlayStation doesn't hit or come even close.

Haha, we will see.
When they need to make the money back on heavy investment and have multiple expensive flops, we will see what they do.

I am sure MS thought the same thing a couple of years ago.

If MS needed to do it, sony will too.

Witch multiple expensive flops? In 15 years their only real flop was Concord, but we don't even know how much it really have cost.

Overral Sony's games are pretty profitable.

It's fine, We'll wait another year for them to come to the superior platform. We're a patient bunch.
That's good that means their strategy not going day and date works, as your gonna still but it anyway.

But also there are pc gamers who own ps5s who will buy playstation exclusives day and date on ps5.

So PC ports still won't be same year as console. Fine, that's to be expected.

The news is that there is no news
It's a new in the sense that they are confirming that their strategie remains the same.

Console is still important for them, their priority. After Microsoft going full third-party some people are expecting Sony to do the same.

We have many people saying that games will come PC day 1 .. so this at least gives a somewhat clear answer.. for now anyway.

PC was not their main adversary for the leaving room.... now its the only one so the strategy may change again

Edit: im not counting the switch 2 since is a portable device aimed to play nintendo games first and foremost

Lol, not at all. Xbox and PlayStation are in no where near similar circumstances. Games sell magnitudes more on PS5 compared to Xbox.

This is as ignorant as someone back in the day saying, "Well, Sega just went third-party, so obviously Nintendo will too".

For sure. They are killing the console doing this and only console sales lead to producing exclusive games that would not be developed otherwise at all.
And even older games releasing on pc diminish the back catalogue one might find interesting when looking at console.

3rd party PS5 developers and publishers (SE for one) are moving to multiplatform. Sonys GAAS experiment has failed miserably, Rarely releasing any 1st party games and have shuttered most of their studios.

MS is raking in the $$$$ but putting their games on the PS5. Some day and date on release (Doom TDA) and some 6 months later (Indiana Jones) and some older titles (Forza Horizon 5). MS games dominating the PS5 sales charts.

How long can Sony hold out from putting more titles on PC and Xbox (or Switch 2)? Because they can't survive on Last of Us remasters forever.

Ms is earning money by releasing on ps5 because it's a leading platform. Wouldn't work other way around.
Sony putting games on pc undoubtedly diminishes their console pull.

Look at Nintendo. The strict protection of their ip and exclusivity works but Sony also got more power so it's ok for multiplatform games

What the part of 'can be used different services' wasnt clear? Or you do think that a 'Mario Network' would work? and WHERE maro and pokemon are recognizable beyond entertainment? Sorry, but that's the truth, Nintendo even today cannot decide on a fu**ng network service name! 🙃

Considering who has left those laughing emojis on the OP this looks to be the correct path.

Sorry lads.
The correct and truly conservative path would be to remove all existing PS games from Steam, Epic and other PC platforms, pretend they were never there in the first place, and to refer to the PC platform only as an eternal rival to replace the defeated Xbox.

So nothing is changing. Are you going to make a thread every day that nothing is changing, OP?
I hope Playstation goes multiplatform and day and date on PC, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if they kept their AAA single player games exclusive to Playstation. They are going to protect their ecosystem. Going day and date would kill that

Well, they are gaining more money than even while their users on PS5 are growing.

Most of Sony's profits come from third-party sales on PS5, they just need to keep people in their console. All those MS games selling well on PS5 are not a bad thing for Sony, they are literally gaining 30% of these sales by doing nothing.

The obvious implication of this is that they KNOW that porting their games to PC harms the value of the PS5, yet there are dopes on this website trying to convince me of the opposite. They're trying to walk a tightrope and prediction - it's not going to work.

The best thing that happened with Xbox was when Microsoft decided to release Xbox games at the same time on PC because it meant I got a better looking, better running, cheaper version of the game.

The worst thing that happened with Xbox was when Microsoft decided to release Xbox games at the same time on PC because it meant that there was now more reasons to not even own an Xbox console at all. My Xbox Series X has not been used in over a year since I upgraded my PC with an RTX 4080 graphics card.

I own a PS5 Pro and bought the PS5 at launch (but not the Xbox Series X) based on the amount of enjoyment I got from my PS4/PS4 Pro which had fantastic first-party single player exclusives that appealed to me a solo-only gamers who has zero interest in any type of online multiplayer or live service titles.

While the early days of the PS5 were a bit lacking with the cross-gen period and limited number of exclusives, I still felt that the console at least delivered a worthwhile next-gen experience with gems like Astro's Playroom, Ratchet & Crank: Rift Apart, Returnal, etc. and that awesome DualSense controller, certainly in comparison to the massively disappointing Xbox Series X which launched with basically no exclusives for the first two years of its existence. It was why I didn't buy an Xbox Series until over a year after its release and then I only bought one because my old PC couldn't run new games and it was during COVID when it was hard to buy a new GPU nevermind at actual MSRP (which ironically is still happening now!).

When Sony started releasing games on PC, I was happy because being released later meant that I still had a reason to own a PS5 plus games like Astro Bot and Gran Turismo 7 have yet to appear on PC. I think that releasing PS5 games on PC 12 to 18 months later is the best strategy personally. I think that if Sony started releasing games on PS5 and PC that it would not only damage sales of the console but could also lead to a drop in quality in the games themselves as developers have to support two formats (plus PC is a platform that requires significantly more effort due to the near infinite number of hardware combinations).
