Sony to push for 16 million PS4 shipments in 2013

I like how Sony still thinks that their brand name holds a lot of sway with consumers. Good luck with that ridiculous prediction, Sony.
Their brand name obviously does hold alot of sway, I don't see how that's in question. But still, nobody knows the context of this rumor or if its even true. Just seems like you want to troll.

Annual parts shipment of 16M from August. AKa 1.3 million per month. I know it's poorly written and unreliable but why are people still interpreting this in the most unrealistic way possible?

This. The report is poorly translated and possibly inaccurate anyway, but reading some of these reactions is slowly draining my will to live.

Yes, Arrogant Sony think they can sell 16 million consoles in two months. Of course they do...

If this is true, they're pretty fucked. They wont sell anywhere NEAR that number. Not even a third of that. Maybe I can pick one up for $50 from the landfill if they do this though.

This thread is a good example of GAF at its worst. Some ridiculous, poorly-sourced rumor gets a thread title stated as fact, and we spend hundreds of posts arguing about it. Every 50 or so posts someone points out that this isn't a fact, it's a ridiculous, poorly-sourced rumor, but that doesn't slow the arguing down at all.

Why you gotta come in and be all realistic and stuff.

That's pretty ambitious number. Is anyone else expecting this generation to be a slow burn for the first three years?

I think that's what they'd like to sell but it's not happening. I could see them getting 50% of that though if they launch at 399 USD and eat the 250-200$ loss per console. This is a company aiming for profitability though so I just don't understand why they'd place that sales bar so high.

I'm highly skeptical of that. But if they designed things right, yields are high, COGS are below MSRP, and they're organized, than damn Kaz is the Jobs of Sony.

This is like 50% of posts this part of the cycle. It's interesting to think of what ifs, but yes this seems highly impractical considering 8 GB GDDR5. While the other specs are pretty medium end, 16 million is still way more than any previous launch. Just the logistics of storing that many is expensive and risky. I mean this isn't an iPad launch.

Yeah, because that's all they do, right? It's not as if they've put a great effort to create amazing first party support for their consoles, or that they created new impressive hardware and a crapload of new features and services for it. No, they just sit there and wait for PS4 to sell without doing anything on name alone.

16 million, 8 million of which will be sent directly to the bottom of the ocean or conveniently "lost" on the way to the retailer. When the headline reads 16 million PS4 sold in the newspapers, the sheep will be lining up in droves to buy it.

The bar has been set too high from this generation. People need to realize that this was / is the peak of adoption rate by casual consumers.

Sony must be trolling

This is the same company that anticipated selling 16 million Vitas in 2012...wait they dropped than estimate to 12 million. Actually, was it 10 million? Oh right, they finished their estimate slashing but settling at 7 million Vitas.

This is a company that has Pachter-esque prognostication skills.

I'm referring to people already set on purchasing a ps4 day one based on the information we currently have.

1. The system is a technological beast
2. They showed some ok titles already and are guaranteed to have more at E3
3. I'm dumb with my money and just fucking want the PS4

Even in that case, it would be safe to assume that those aren't the only games that will be available for PS4 at/around launch. It's probably the lust for new hardware driving people to be impulsive in their statement of intent of day 1 purchasing, though.

What the hell? Even if the console comes out for $299 it won't sell that much. Maybe 2 or 3 million. That number is just pure fantasy.

Edit:

It was 16 million psp+vita iirc but that wass still some pie in the sky stuff

If they are talking pure shipment then I would assume the production is going to start within the next six months. If they are talking about sales (which I assume they are not) then it would have to be nearly free to sell 16 million units in 2 months (assuming it comes in Nov or very late Oct).

Opinions are like assholes etc etc and they can be wrong. The brand name holds great sway.

I don't know what's funny about what he said. He was harsh, but what he said isn't untrue. Back when I was a kid, Sony gear was seen as prestigious, kinda like owning an Apple product today. Now they're just another also ran in the tech world really. The PS3 generation has shown them that people won't just go and buy a console because it has "SONY" written on it, no matter what the price, cos I think they assumed that way more people would go PS2 -> PS3 than actually did. They ain't gonna sell 16 million PS4s in the first year unless they've lost their minds and are going to sell it for $199 or something.

Yup.

Sony will be hard pressed to manufacture and simply gather components for 16 million units before the end of the year. specifically DDR5.

it's a total pipe dream and is not close to reality.

The funniest part is that some people are not even interpreting the rumor properly

What games are day 1 ps4 purchasers so keen on ?

Killzone? Knack ? .... Really ?

Assasin's Creed 4
Battlefield 4
Watch_Dogs
Second Son
Knack

That alone is a great lineup and we haven't even had E3 yet. And yeah, I want the next gen versions of cross gen titles. Watchdogs, Battlefield, and AC will be best on next gen, and they should all be available when the PS4 launches.
