Sony unveils next-gen RGB mini-LED TV Tech | "OLED Killer?"

Sony has set the home entertainment world alight today by not only revealing its next generation of TV technology, but saying that it hopes to have these game-changing new screens available to buy as early as next year. What’s more, building on the message the brand built around the launch of its current flagship Bravia 9 range, Sony’s new TV technology is not based on the OLED technology that’s long been so beloved of home cinema fans.

It's still LCD, just now with a better more accurate backlight that's both brighter and more finely tuned for colour representation, so it still has the motion issues and slower pixel response time.

It won't burn in at least and perhaps in monitors with high refresh rates it'll look great but in the end, it's LCD just made a bit better.

Burn in isn't really an issue. I've been using a LG C2 as a monitor for 2 years. Including work from home.

Vary between not only brand, but TV generation. DF crew countless trade their tv for this particular reason.
Propaganda by the LCD lobby. Been using a C1 as a pc monitor for 4 years, no burn in.

Its a common issue, having your TV showing the issue or not.

I use an OLED as a PC monitor.

Zero burn in despite using regularly for 2 years.

As long as you have dark theme enabled with low brightness during desktop usage, burn in is not a problem.

I admit I was terrified from the prospect of burn in when I first purchased it but now I use the TV as a normal PC monitor l without a care in the world.

I dont mind LCD as long as the benefits are there.

I was supposed to buy an OLED but after going with the mini-led q27g3xmn and witnessing its HDR prowess - I'm afraid the switch to current OLED's and their weak HDR performance will only sour my experience. Full screen OLED HDR brightness is still so mediocre, and very expensive.

So we've got QD-OLED/WOLED vs Mini-Led/RGB Mini-Led vs Micro-Led (whenever that's coming).

The next few years will be dope then - competition benefits us all (especially with pricing).

I had an LG OLED65C8PLA for years and never experienced burn in and that television got hammered! I currently have an LG OLED77G26LA which also gets hammered and no burn in so far touch wood. 🙂

I've had a couple of plasma televisions in the past. One was a Panasonic (can't remember the model) and the other was a Pioneer KRP600M and that eventually got burn in.

Well yes it depends on the quality of your panel. Personally I wouldn't even bother with an OLED monitor, just buy a small tv and use a service remote to tune it for pc usage.

ever since the 8 series of LG OLEDS, burn in shouldn’t be an issue for most people. I haven’t had an issue with even image retention since the 7 series where it was noticeable with yellows and reds mostly.

I will just wait for micro LED/Qdel using my OLED. I will probably buy another OLED after ~5 years.

For me, the best way to handle Oled TVs is to sell after 3 years of owning. Pass the burn in risk unto the next buyer and get the newest model.

Screw OLED, for gaming it sucks. Get a mini QLED tv instead. You don't have to break the bank for a good tv these days, or need a popular brand.

I’ve been waiting ages to upgrade my 4K TV…seems like I’m always waiting for some transformational tech

Sucks because I’d like to wait for 8K and I currently don’t have VRR or 40Hz

8k is a waste of time and money. No content outside of few PS5 Pro games and PC, worse panels, higher prices etc.

Buy 120hz OLED/QD-OLED or higher end mini led. It will be great for gaming for next ~10 years.

Which is ironic as the pixel response time on OLED is why anything under 60fps shutters.
It's a double edged sword that people don't want to admit exists.

This problem started to happening with high end lcd's as well. Times of shit LCD pixel response times and "smooth" 30fps games are long gone.

I think 40fps is still playable on OLED.

It's going to need to be mighty impressive technology to compete with the G6/S95F that should launch next year. The G5 is already hitting 2500 nits this year, with rumors that the G6 will be around 3000-3500 nits. The newer panels have mostly solved the brightness problem, the only issue with OLED now is potential burn-in.

You'll be waiting a while. Micro-LED in large panels at a price anywhere in the realm of 'reasonable' is a long ways off. Longer than your 5 year wait for another OLED.

Pretty much my entire post was conditional
What I'm saying is Mini-LED technology exists today and it's less expensive than OLED. Only hardware difference here is changing the backlit LEDs to RGB.

LG OLEDS released on or after 2021 seem to have mostly resolved burn in issues. Been using mine as a monitor for 4 years now and don't have even the slightest hint of burn in. Anything not having individually lit pixels is a major step backwards compared to OLED. Unless you have a tremendously bright room that needs a brighter tv, an OLED tv is plenty bright enough as well. Don't believe the marketing propaganda!

Burn in is real, it is just a matter if you're willing to cope with the possibility of getting it or not.

But trying to say it isn't real, come on...

Especially with monitors. They don't have nearly the same amount of protections as televisions do but they're charging up the ass for them. Hardware Unboxed has a great series on this I recommend. Just just a FALD led monitor for a few hundred vs an OLED.

Burn in is not really the problem for most folks. It's the issue when you only watch one type of content or play one game all the time.

Now, but I hold my TVs for a decade. I’m still rolling with an original KS8000 from Samsung which was like 2016 with one of the first HDR sets

I think 8K will be viable options on ps6 and ps6 pro

Buy 8k tv when content is available. 8k tv from for example 2026 will be missing features that may be needed for the best experience with PS6 Pro in ~2032. Tvs from 2015-2019 are missing A LOT of great features that are needed for the best experience on consoles and PC.

Burn in that you notice, that's the difference. Linus Tech Tips and Hardware Unboxed have already proven using OLED as real monitors in the same vein as you would an LCD starts producing burn in a couple of months.

I'm one of the people who got burned on the promises they put out there about the X900H and I'll never buy another Sony TV again for the rest of my life regardless of what they put out.

What promises if you don't mind me asking?

I'm curious because I've always had Sony TV's. Each time I get a new one, the older one passes to another house division.

So far they've been great, except maybe the 55" one, which has the IR sensor on the TV smoked, meaning I can't use the remote for inputs basically.

Christ we still talking about OLED Burn in in 2025!? I have a CX & C4, the CX has been the main driver for 4yrs in our back room and not a peep out of it, picture is still great but that room is south facing with big windows so daytime viewing ain't setting the world on fire, nighttime is still mind-blowing but showing its age in comparison to the C4 in the front room so have decided to replace with a G5 for that extra brightness, was tempted with a new top of the range Sony TV to go with the PS5 and Theatre Quad to keep it all Sony but LCD and another years wait... :-( I think LG will have it all wrapped up this year with the G5 going by the early reviews

Jesus Christ man, I still remember that Reddit mega thread with mods banning users left and right and the whole furore Sony created with its false promises, in fact, this would have been a prime example of a class action lawsuit since it was basically false advertising ffs and to this day I'm still wondering how Sony managed to exit the whole fiasco unscathed.

It was mid COVID (can't remember if it was the first or second year) and I, like many others, decided it was time for a new TV with all the next-gen, HDMI 2.1 goodies due to being imprisoned at home and sure enough, I went for the 65" version.
Now, I remember courier services being crippled by the heavy workload at that time which meant that I'd have my new TV 2 weeks from my order - and that was when the info on the internet started dropping about the halved vertical resolution at 120Hz amongst other things, needless to say, after 1 week+ of reading/combing the internet I decided that it wasn't worth the risk since everything thus far had showed that it was a hardware limitation and not a software one and sure enough, that proved to be the case since the TV is still gimped to this day.
Anyway, called the shop, cancelled my order and I must have had a 2 months long back and forth with them as to have my fucking money back...
What a stressful ball ache that was, i still remember it to this day although I don't know if that has to do more with the TV or the whole hellish COVID period, fuck man 😁

It's a shame since the TV was (and still is) pretty good otherwise picture-quality wise but man, the fact that they tried to pass a (literally) gimped product as one of the "next gen ready" TVs still angers me, fucking Sony man...

And oh, as for the "experts"...SHILLS the lot of them, especially that Caleb guy from digital trends since he (obviously) purposefully forgot to mention its shortcomings in his "review" and he'd never comment on the hundreds of comments on YT regarding this very specific problem.

Never-ever trust "professionals", they're basically shills/used car salesmen that don't care about you or i , they're gonna get paid for their "reviews" and just like that they're gonna go for their next review of the latest and shiniest thing/product, fuck the lot of them.

People here claim burn in is no longer an issue but they have been using their screen for less than 4 years... You do realise that it happens over time, right ? Not everybody will experience it but stop claiming it has been fixed when it simply can't be.
