Sony's 2025 Business Segment Meeting, June 13; Hideaki Nishino and Herman Hulst presenting for SIE

The Last one of those gave us that great Hermen reaction image right?

If so I have great hopes for this one rofl.

Sony is going live to sack Hulst?!
To fire him wouldn't make sense.

They promoted him because he has been breaking sales records almost every year that he has been in charge of PS Studios, collected a ton of awards and basically doubled the amount of money their first party IPs generate by highly growing their business in console, PC and movie/tv show adaptations areas.

Hermen in the meeting:

"Nobody panics when things go 'according to plan'. Not even a horrifying plan."

But Hermen it didn't go according to plan..

"Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos."

I think he should probably be on the outs, but we also don't have all the information.

Who greenlit God of War live service out of bluepoint?

Did Connie do a lot of this and that's why she was let go?

I don't want to sound like Men in Boxes here, but not sure how you can fire him after the reception to Marvel Tokon, which has the potential to sell 20 million copies or more and transform the face of the fighting game genre. That's before even getting into the synergist strategy with Nishino on a fight stick, which could bring in hundreds of millions of dollars.

I think Herman has a lot to prove in the next 2 years though, but the future timeline on a lot of these projects will be like 3-4 years from now....

Based Hulst making hysterical sweaty chud LARPers seethe.
I hope they talk about Tōkon being the single biggest release in the FG genre for the past 8 years, from a company that has never taken FGs that seriously.

Very true. Can't wait to see what they say overall about Playstation.

Say what you will about Phil Spencer, like he killed Xbox, is a retard, etc etc

But Herman? He's currently killing PlayStation, is a retard, etc etc.

Wait. What is this thread about?

You're comparing both a lower level executive to the literal head of a gaming division, and an actual flourishing, massively successful platform in a global scale to... whatever the fuck Xbox is.

Excluding Smash Bros, it has the potential to be the best selling fighting game of all time...

I highly critical of Hulst, but under his watch he has delivered Helldivers 2 and Marvel Tokon. Two games that will be among the best selling Sony games of all time... God of War Ragnarok and Spider-Man 2 will also. Death stranding as a franchise through Sony happened because of Hulst as well.

Microsoft haven't had a success like Helldivers 2 or Marvel Tokon in the last 20 years... And no I'm not counting Minecraft that they bought after the fact. Same with CoD.

What?! Success? What success?!

The game was announced 1 week ago, and it is releasing NEXT YEAR! Do you people actually read what you write sometimes?

I see that you think predictive analysis isn't valid...

Let's examine the facts

Arc System Works don't miss

These are their last 4 major fighting games

2018 - Dragon Ball FighterZ - 87MC
2018 - BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle - 76 MC
2021 - Guilty Gear Strive - 87 MC
2020/2023 - GranBlue Fantasy Versus/Versus Rising - 78/81

I put in bold the bigger budget titles.... They don't miss on games with this kind of size and scope. They've been working on this game for years...

Dragon Ball FighterZ sold over 10 million copies.

Marvel is a bigger IP than Dragon Ball Z. It's safe to presume that the floor of this game is likely to be around 10 million copies. You can tell already based on the trailer that this is going to be king in the FGC on release. That brings its ceiling up in the 15-20+ million range.

That's before any considerations of things like a PS5 bundle (maybe even a PS5 super slim) that doesn't have a dualsense but is packaged with the Defiant Fight Stick and comes with Tokon.

This game might have the largest advertising budget for any fighting game ever...

To give you some reference to how much of an impact this game is already making in the 1 week we're talking about.

10 million selling DBFZ's reveal trailer is at 2.6 million views on youtube...
Marvel Tokon is already at 2.3 million + 275K on PlayStation's channel

Live demotion for Hulst? 😆 I hope they bring back Shu as consultant or head on reviving Sony Japan studio games, but impossible in reality.
You will be quite disappointed if you think that Shu has a great expertise on the Japanese dev biz. He was known for leading the American game dev operations at Sony for a reason.

Well maybe his strength is he is more engage to fans and he probably knows what fans really wants. Im thankful to him for gravity rush, psvr, stellar blade and ico, last guardian and shadow of colossus.

Nah, it's just PR. Otheriwse we wouldn't have gotten pieces like this one back in the day:

I'm sorry to break it to you, but he had no say on the approval of PSVR, Stellar Blade, The Last Guardian and Shadow of the Colossus. Only Ico and maaaaybe Gravity Rush.
Pretty sure Shu had like zero involvement in Shadow of the Colossus, lol. And Stellar Blade outside of suggesting it to SIE staff that actually worked on it.

Bungie shutting down and marathon cancelled.

You never know.

End of this week will be a month since the Marathon chat with zero follow up. Radio silence.

There are only a few paths they can take with Marathon, but Bungie isn't shutting down.

They can keep the current release date and simply ride things out to their natural outcome, they could delay the game and try and fix it, or they can cancel the game.

We're nearing 106 days until launch day. I imagine that a decision will need to be made pretty soon about how to move forward on this.

The cost between now and launch day is probably about 10 million dollars. They have to decide if they're going to move forward with a sunk cost fallacy (which ironically Naughty Dog decided against) or if they'll cut bait to try and limit reputational damage.

If you plan to stick with the launch date, you presumably still need a public beta in August/early September. With Destiny 2 they released an open beta announcement trailer on July 6th, exactly 2 months before release. So if they have a similar pattern here, we'd expect that announcement no later than July 23rd. So we have 44 days until then.

I'd imagine we'll her about a delay or cancellation within the next month.

I'd add that while it wasn't surprising to not see Marathon at the State of Play, I think it's very telling it wasn't at Summer Games Fest. That was really the last opportunity to showcase the game in a large event.

Even Edge of Fate wasn't showcased at either event...

Also note that gamescom is way too late to cancel or delay it. It's absence there would be an obvious red flag.

How do you make sure that whatever art assets that get shown aren't stolen, either? I doubt they got these things sorted out so quickly.
