Soul Calibur remake on DS?

Why would Namco bother with Soul Calibur on the DS when the PSP is a far more superior platform for the game and has a much better control set-up for fighting games?

Soul Calibur Remake

We have an excellent piece of news for fans of fighting games; Namco has announced that it is currently developing a remake of the first arcade Soul Calibur, for the recently released Nintendo DS. Among the characteristics that the game will have, it has been commented that it will surpass the original in terms of graphics as well as audio; also, it will include an option where we can perform special moves, with only pressing one button. If you're asking yourself if Link is going to be included in the game, everything seems to be indicating that he won't, this being because Namco does not want the game's story to be altered, so the hero will continue to be a Cube exclusive. As you may have noticed, the Nintendo DS is receiving lots of support, there is no party that is not working in some project for the handheld, and the best thing is that this is only the beginning.

I can say that this magazine is the real thing. I used to read it when I lived in Chile, it is like a Spanish version of Nintendo Power. They have been in existence since the NES days and they've always reported true pieces of news for Nintendo's systems.

Cheers Namco!

Why bother making any games for the DS? It's not as though people are buying it.

So uhh..press 1 button to do special moves? I'm surprised we don't have to draw something with the stylus :P

Speevy: Certain games would work better on the DS than others. I don't think Soul Calibur would be one of them. :)

I was thinking Soul Blade or whatever the PSX one was. Yeah, why the fuck Soul Calibur?

If this happens, if would be a lot easier for Namco to convert the original Soul Calibur to the DS. The arcade version was on the System 12 hardware, which is basically an upgraded Playstation.

DC -> DS easier than PSX -> DS?

The original Soul Calibur (arcade) was running on PSone hardware.
I guess the DS version could be superior to that.

I sure as hell wouldn't want Soul Blade's fighting system. In fact I dont want to play Soul Calibur's fighting system either. I can't go back to that after SC2.

They should just remake SC2 with worse graphics.

Other way around. :)

Okay.

So there was a game by Namco called Soul Blade that came out in 1997. Soul Edge was the arcade version of that game SB was an upgrade of or vice versa. The true sequel, Soul Calibur was released in 1998, and later beefed up on the Dreamcast. That game's sequel, Soul Calibur II, was released in arcades and on all living consoles in 2003.

I think I've got it.

So are there any pics of the original SC? And wouldn't it still be easier to just do Soul Edge/Blade?

? The button layout on both machines is very similar. I've never held a PSP though, so...

Oh, okay, I see what you meant now. Sorry, this is how the series went:

-Soul Edge (Arcade, System 11 hardware [essentially a PSX] 1995 release)
-Soul Edge Version 2 (Arcade, added Hwang and Cervantes as playable characters, 1995)
-Soul Edge (Playstation, 1996 Japan)
-Soul Blade (Playstation, 1997 USA and Europe. Same game, but got edited and had horrible English voices added)
-Soul Calibur (Arcade, System 12 hardware [an upgraded PSX] 1998 release)
-Soul Calibur (Dreamcast, 1999. Received a huge visual upgrade from the arcade version)
-Soul Calibur 2 (Arcade, System 246 [essentially a PS2] 2002 release)
-Soul Calibur 2 (GC/PS2/Xbox, 2003)

So basically Soul Blade is the slightly-suckier version of Soul Edge. :) In the U.S., some of the more "risque" elements were removed from the intro/game, and in the UK, Li Long's nunchuks were changed to a different weapon. I can't remember which version of the game had Mitsurugi changed to a blone-haired pirate with an eyepatch named "Arthur" though. :)

The arcade Soul Calibur is NOT running on the same Playstation hardware as the console system...that was System 11. System 12 was a more powerful version of the PSX, and while Namco did a great job converting other System 12 games like Tekken 3, they weren't arcade perfect...models didn't have as many polys, 3D backgrounds had to be removed, etc.

So you guys think the NDS can do this?

Wario, from what we know about the DS, I don't see why it wouldn't be possible to have a port similar to what Tekken 3 looked like on the Playstation. Minus all the extra modes...and arranged music...and probably missing animation...

Yeah, it needs to come out on PSP. :P

BTW are you sure those aren't DC screenshots? ;)

Better yet, I wonder if Sega fans think it could be done. Aren't some of them even still arguing that the original SC looks better than SC2?

Quite a lot can fit onto one of those DS cards though, right? 128 MB minimum? What's the maximum? I'm sure Tekken 3 at the time could have only been 600 MB max.

And you might wanna think System 9 or 10, not 11 for a DS port. ;)

Bad-quality pic from the arcade version. Maybe I should try to find some Tekken 3 pics...

Edit: Some Tekken 3/Tag screens. Model quality is about the same from what I remember, but Soul Calibur had much better animation.

That's not the arcade version. :p Have you even SEEN the arcade version? It looks like a PSX game.

Actually I've only seen Soul Calibur on Dreamcast. I didn't go to arcades that often in those days :P

It's hard to find screens for the arcade version

No, those pics are definitely NOT from the arcade version. The difference between the arcade and Dreamcast version is like night and day. :)

I can try to play the arcade game on MAME and take a screenshot, but last time I checked, it doesn't work very well emulated.

if they wanna do it, nothing's gonna stop them.

I don't think graphics is gonna be that be of a problem they can always strip it down.

What could they use the second screen for this time? An innovative 2d map of the combat arena? The display of the health bars? To draw special moves? To do conversations between the fighters (by clicking on multiple choice dialogs) in order to gain stamina?

Pics from MAME for a more clear view of what the arcade game looked like. It's pretty glitchy (can't even seen the models until the win poses come up and in some intros) and there's problems with the backgrounds, but this should give you a good idea of what the models look like.

Quite a jump from arcade to Dreamcast. :)

Well, it would look better on the smaller screen. :) But this is why I said it would be a lot better to see this game released on the PSP.

Wasn't this hinted at awhile ago? Maybe it was just a rumor...

Anyway, I'm glad it's coming out for the NDS. Shows that Namco has faith in the machine. Alot of faith, considering the high profile titles they've announced thus far.

Why wouldn't devrs have faith, there are 20+million (?) GB-GBA users, and most of the will go to the NDS. Its logical.
